Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #65 ~ 28 December 2004
The Blurb It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine! Well, it's not precisely the end of the world. However, it is the end of the year! The sixty-fifth edition of Ubique's Weekly is the last one that all of you will be seeing for the year. Good bye 2004. Hello 2005! We here at UW hope that all of you had a happy holiday, and we're hoping that you have a happy new year as well. Out with the old and in with the new. This week's edition is all about the old and the new. In future issues we look forward to reminiscing about what once was, and promoting what is yet to be. So break out your champagne and get those New Year's Resolutions flowing!
Not surprisingly, due to the holidays, we don't have very many updates to share with you all. As a matter of fact, I didn't receive a compiled list of individual Character Updates. For those of you who sent in your updates to Ellyn Vt, do not panic. Also do not be upset. This is actually an expected setback. I didn't expect very much from our last issue. The holidays keep us all very busy. And I'm surprised I even dared to compile a final newsletter for the year. But I felt that we should end on a nice odd number. Hopefully it will be our lucky number. Come next year I hope to have a lot more news to share with you. But until then, let's get on with what we have in store.
Top Story! Our SSE must have been a very busy bee herself this past week, as I have not received any Top Story! from her. Though I have also sent her a lot of ideas over the past couple of weeks. Next week marks a new year, so perhaps we'll have something fun and exciting for you all by then. Some time in January we are planning another Best Of contest as we did last year. For those of you who don't know what the Best Of consists of, keep your eyes peeled. UW's CHE organized a splendid poll for us last year around this time. Hopefully DonatelIo Harada's thinking cap will be working just as beautifully as it did last year. I'm looking forward to more humor and collaboration. So keep an eye out in this section in the future for just such a thing.
Storyline Spotlight Since this section is also organized by DarkAngelGenesis it is no surprise that we have no updates to share with you this week. However, a touch of inspiration has attacked me. For some of our newer subscribers, it may be beneficial to repeat old news from the previous year. In issue number fifty-nine, we detailed an e-mail interview with the creators of Northedge Academy and University. Two issues ago we were witness to this headline:
Parole from Northedge Academy: The school semester for Northedge Academy ends on the 16th of December, with finals running from December 10th thru the 15th. The last day for term papers is the 16th, no exceptions. Students will receive their report cards on the 21st. The school year resumes with the spring semester on January 11th. All students should arrive on the 5th-8th for re-enrollment and to sign up for courses. We at Northedge wish you all a wonderful holiday season!
With that in mind, I think it may be beneficial to repeat this description from issue number twenty-three that was compiled only a little over a year ago. Some of you may be curious as to what all this Northedge hubbub is all about. So allow me to satisfy your curiosity as best as I am able.
Northedge and Northedge Academy: This area of Rhydin, approximately two miles north of "downtown," is home to several familiar inhabitants, including the Haradas (DonatelIo Harada and SmileFang), Seamus (Seamus Wylie), Rose (Katie Rose Wylie) and Cat (Matakhat Cain). It's a pleasant, almost suburban neighborhood, dotted with occasional shops but mostly homes, for all levels of income. The roads are almost up to modern code, with the buildings set well back, with generous yards and frequent patches of woodland. Probably the largest lot in the area is the home of Northedge Academy, formerly a factory that had been converted into an apartment complex, then was bought by Donatello Harada and converted further into one of Rhydin's few schools. It's a large, almost fortress-like building, four stories high and made of mostly sandstone, with gray stone detailing. Stables and dormitories are attached and a forest surrounds it on three sides, a wide, circular gravel driveway leading up to the front. It's a boarding school for K-12, mostly wealthy students, but with a few charity cases taken in every year, on the basis that every child deserves a chance to learn.
On a side note, there are a fair number of young characters seen in the many rooms online that attend the Academy. Perhaps you have a young character or even an NPC son or daughter of one of your characters who would be elligible to attend Northedge. If so, do not hesitate to contact the masterminds, Ink Wire Associates DonatelIo Harada & SmileFang. It's a HUGE storyline with room for everybody! Next week students will be reregistering for classes. Perhaps it's not too late.
This Just In As with our other sections, we did not receive a whole lot in the way of Headlines this week. I have it on good authority that our CHE has just newly arrived back in town from the holidays, so she has not had much time to review the submissions at all. Rest assured that I am not without news, however. Some of this comes from old issues as I feel it relevant to the start of the new year. Most of it is old news as a matter of fact. But it is not without purpose. So do enjoy!
Headlines
A Note from Animal Control: Remember to Spay and Neuter your pets! The Spellslinger's Guild is offering a sponsored free spay and neuter clinic for the rest of December-so you have no excuse not to!
Bloody Beach: Rhydin Shore Patrol is STILL investigating a massacre at what appears to have been a luau. Details on the shooting spree are being withheld by authorities. A total of twenty-six people were shot to death with a variety of weapons. Until further notice, a square mile of Rhydin's coast is closed to the public.
Dear Abby?: Throughout all the discussion on an IC newspaper on the PaP boards, there is one in particular that has captured the Editor In Chief of Ubique's Weekly's attention. A question presented by UW subscriber AKrugerAllen: "Are you planning a Dear Deb section?" With this inquiry, the member also submitted a sample question for what could potentially be a humorous addition to the pages of Ubique's Weekly. The Editor in Chief's response was that should Deb subscribe to UW, she would be more than happy to invite her to handle just such a section. The question is ... what do our readers think? Should we include a Dear Deb section in our newsletter? At least a Dear Somebody? For more inspiration, please review the PaP boards which are linked to in our Advertisements sections.
Rhy'Din Yellow Pages: Through discussion amongst players about the terrible confusion that transpires concerning precisely what it is that each individual character in Rhy'Din does to pay the bills, a great idea has been born. I felt it would be beneficial to not only display this idea as a UW Advertisement, but also as a Headline. The details as to why this idea came into focus can be reviewd on The Circle (the specific post has been provided via hyperlink). In brief, the question arises, "Who can my character turn to when a certain job needs done?" Many of us have taken great care and have spent many hours devising backgrounds and occupations for our characters. With this in mind, it would only seem logical (and also cordial) to conclude that if your character needed a specific something done that he or she would turn to another player's character who can do just that. To not would be foolish and at times possibly even bigoted.
Therefore, Mutual Endeavors member and fellow storyline collaborator DarkAngelGenesis has taken it upon herself to collect as much information as humanly possible from all of you players in an effort to create Rhy'Din's very own Yellow Pages. Take a moment of your time one of these days and think about what it is your characters do for a living. What are their occupations? How do they make their money? Would other characters come to them in order to make use of their services? An example listing would be:
Rei: Openly - student at Northedge Academy, studies drama, plays football, occasionally works at the Rambling Rose Tavern. Covertly - pickpocket, con artist, and sneak thief.
Use your imaginations and help us to help you by providing all the details that you feel are necessary. In a future issue of Ubique's Weekly, I will be highlighting as much as I can. Perhaps we can even add this into a section of the Mutual Endeavors website. Please send all information to

for these purposes. More information on this as it comes in.
Rogues of Rhy'Din: Months ago it was brought to my attention that a new type of storyline is being built. In some respects it could be considered a guild, but no. While it is centered around a select choice few of character candidates, it is not necessarily guild revival in roleplaying. A great number of characters fall under the category of rogue, and it is plausible to conclude that there would indeed be a Thieves' Guild in the area. Though do not confuse it with the old version of guilds that use to overpopulate the RP scene. This is in fact a group storyline, a collaboration in the works. For more information, please visit the website at: http://www.thievesden.ashadowofme.com/ Their numbers are slowly growing, at least so far as identified rogues are concerned. Perhaps your character can find a place to fit in amongst the underground movement as well!
Sled Into Adventure: The Kodiak Falls Office of Blackjack Adventures is open for business. Think the season ended with the warm weather? Wrong! We have new and exciting adventures for you! Contact Administrative Director of Operations Irina Braeden to schedule an adventure package with Chasz Havery, BJA's resident Mudbogger or Yvonne Rivard, BJA's resident Snowdog (See Classifieds for more details).
The Blackjack Family would like to extend our gratitude to those who made our inaugural season such a success. As a token of our gratitude, winter clients will receive discounts on select spring packages. It's just our way of thanking you for your loyalty.
Still On The Crime Beat: Anyone with information on various cases, including the murders of Aileen Hodgeson, Dorothy Peterson, Becky Johnson, Howard Conway, Patricia Miller, Stella Donaldson, and Paul and Mary Hanson is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter. Leave a message with the local PD, or a voice message at 940-555-7002. Remember, your local authority needs your help to solve these cases. You will not be asked to give your name or information about yourself.
Winter Wonderland: In the tradition of the Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride events at Dr. Maranya Valkonan's ranch and due to the success of the Winter Wonderland events the good Doctor and her gardener Jack Bishop planned for the month of December, the Winter Wonderland will be extended through January. The proceeds from these events will continue to go to benefit programs at Riverview Clinic. Bring your snow shoes, your mittens, and your sense of humor! In celebration of the new year, it is also rumored that they will be hosting a New Year's Eve party for any interested parties who would enjoy partaking in a new and unique way to party!
(The Valkonan family in no way, shape, form, or fashion take responsibility for any damages by the pranks, jokes, handshakes, or general contact with Jack Bishop.)
Words of Thanks: Rhydin Family Charities would like to thank all those who made gifts of time and money during this holiday season and would like to foster the spirit of giving throughout the year. The 2nd Annual Rhydin Family Charities benefit, catered by Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery and Aldo's Restaurant, was a smashing success, raising a record amount of money for various charitable organizations.
In Other News... As I mentioned in the Blurb, I did not receive a compiled list of individual Character Updates this week from our CNE. However, I did receive a small amount of updates from a few of our subscribers, so we are not at a total loss. For those of you who did submit updates to the Character News Editor, do not worry. All of that news can easily be implimented into our next edition of Ubique's Weekly. Bear in mind that I'm still interested in seeing what the rest of the characters not listed did for the holiday season. So get your thinking caps working and send us some news! Think of this as your second chance if you haven't sent in any updates yet. Next week is destined to be bigger and better than this week! With that said, on with the news!
Anna (AriannaRavenwood): The blue sister was seen at the family gathering for Yule.
Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana): The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands. Except for looking after the Silver Moon Inn on Christmas, Ariana has pretty much stayed out of the public eye, save to work at her Bakery as usual. She kept herself busy with the preparations for the Rhydin Family Charities benefit, along with the usual holiday baking rush. Ariana spent and will be spending the holidays at her husband and brother in law's clan lands with her twin sister and her family. The green sister, along with the staff of her Bakery, also hosted a Christmas feast for some of the city's poor.
Colleen MacLeod (PrlUnicorn): Yule season at Navarra Farms is always a busy time of year. The family gathers on Christmas Eve to feast, celebrate their blessings, and reflect on the coming year ahead. Most of Collie's Rhydin based family was at home to join in the festivities. Horse drawn sleighs had been prepared to carry those so inclined off for a moonlight ride in a light snowfall. Ithildirnen (SMI Ithildirnen), Anorlas, Sulrin (SMI Sulrin), and young Garrick provided the venison for both feasts.
Dinner was followed by the opening of presents in the grand ballroom. Dancing and games were set in motion for those that preferred to remain indoors. Fourteen year old Garrick Brock played an original composition on guitar accompanied by his twin, Nicole, on piano.
Eileen and Rob McKintyr, along with their son, spent the weekend in her grandmother's home. Young James seemed quite fascinated with his Uncle Mir's pointed ears. Mir, son of Collie and her lifemate, Ithildirnen, is two years younger than James, who just turned three. Mir, being a precocious Elfling, brooked no nonsense when it came to having his ears touched. No blood was shed, however, the family believes James has finally learned why his parents have told him to not touch certain things; sometimes they touch you back!
On Christmas Day, the lady of the manor's family prepares and serves dinner for the farm hands and their household. Extended family and friends were also given an open invitation to attend the larger feast. During the Christmas holidays, work on the farm is kept to a bare minimum to allow everyone time for their own personal celebrations. Dinner is held in a large banquet hall done up in the style of Medieval Europe.
As a Yule gift, Collie presented one of the few white stallions, called Uilos (the name means "Ever white as snow"), among her herds to her mate.
Deputy Marshall Wynter (Rachael Wynter): The scarred law woman in black continues to work on wrapping up certain investigations (see Headlines). Rachael received information about a recent series of ritualistic murders from an anonymous informant and is currently investigating this lead. She is also working closely with Doctor Nigel Newborn from RCSI on this case. Her investigations keep the Deputy Marshall out of the public eye for the most part. Rachael spent and will spend the holidays the same way she has the past four years, on the job, Serving and Protecting.
Diana Lasher (Fragile Fury): Commander Lasher and her crew of Misfits are enjoying some well earned R&R over the Yule season. She's been spotted around Rhydin mounted on the Vincent Black Knight motorcycle that she's been restoring for the last few years. She says it needs a few more tweaks and it will be ready for the open road. It she wasn't a glorified grease monkey, as she puts it, she would likely be in business doing vehicle restoration.
Pictures of her first restoration, a Camaro, that belongs to a known frequentor of the Star's End, have rumored to be among her possessions. Despite her often hard exterior, it appears Ms. Lasher does have a few sentimental cells in her body. She was in attendance at both gatherings at Navarra Farms, this year.
Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan (Maranya Valkonan): She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn. The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic. Maranya is very pleased with the landscaping on her ranch and the Winter Wonderland events there. However, the combined strain of keeping up with her busy schedule overall, along with investigating a series of mysterious deaths among some of her young cancer patients and working on changing her employment for the better continues to take its toll on the good Doctor. Thankfully, Maranya spent and will spend her holidays in a pleasant and relaxing manner.
Dris (BardGaIIant): The bard spent a not-so-quiet holiday season with a vast majority of his family. As per Driscol family tradition, the "family" traveled back "home" to spend a chaotic Christmas weekend at the Norcross homestead. For the holidays Dris shared music with the family and presented each brother-in-law, sister, niece, and nephew with his or her own uniquely designed music box crafted by his own hands. His own daughter and Carmine's son were gifted with their own music boxes as well. Even Shadi was given one! As for Carmine's present, well ... that remains a secret.
Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik): On Christmas Eve, Ehz traveled all around the Multiverse dressed as Skimpy Claus once again! It is rumored that she delivered a package to the doorsteps of every person she knows (which is a great number of people!). She even left packages on the doorsteps of people she doesn't know! Each package contained a box of homemade, frosted sugar cookies shaped like trees and stars; a scented jar candle of miraculously the recipients favorite scent; and a little card hand drawn with crayon -- signed in her full name. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their little bundles of joy.
Elaine (Elaine Aqua): No solo exploring jaunts for Elaine at all. She's enjoying the winter weather and having fun engaging in snowball fights with her cousins and family. The eleven year old's also been helping her Ma, Aunty Allison and Melly (Ariana MacGyldren, Allison Reynor and Melanie Wyndham) with the holiday baking at her Ma's Bakery. Elaine still misses Beauty but is consoled by taking care of Empress Emerald of Grayfur's kittens, though she's still grumpy that she's not allowed to name the kittens. She gave gifts of homemade sugar and gingerbread cookies to her friends and family members and made out like the proverbial bandit when it came to gift getting. Among the presents the eleven year old received were her own set of baking utensils and spices, a set of hand carved wooden dolls and a veritable flock of hand carved and painted wooden dragons. Elaine really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.
Emmy (Empress Grayfur): Eleven-week-old kittens! Tinsel! Ornaments! Garland!? Stay away from those wrapped packages! Keep out of the piles of crumpled wrapping paper! Oi! Didn't anybody request a kitten for Christmas!?
Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random): As usual her holidays were spent as they always are. In hibernation.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): In this week's installment, there's still been no news of note or actual sign of this native Rhydin resident around anywhere. Stay tuned.
Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue): Jack spent Christmas as he usually does, putting up with the family back in Florida! Relatives from all around dropped in to share the holiday joy. He returned to Rhy'Din on Monday morning to resume his duties at the Valkonan Ranch. Before jumping back into work, however, he stopped by a few places to deliver some presents to his friends. Morgan, Stephen, and Cat each received their very own can of peanut brittle (which just so happened to have spring snakes instead!) But to make up for it, he did have some real peanut brittle in fancy little tins to make up for it. Maranya was given a new business ledger and day planner for the coming 2005 year, as well as a box of peanut brittle. With the holidays over, it's time to get back to work!
Joker (SMI Joker, Richard D Harker): The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn went back home to London with Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock) for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker) and hopes to see him at the family gathering, along with his brother JT and sister Connie. The eldest Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan). Joker finally figured out what to get Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock) for Christmas. He surprised her with a pair of leather bracers with tooled unicorns on them, along with a pair of matched daggers with unicorns on the hilts. He can't wait to try out the present Rhi got him on some of the winding roads around Rhydin.
Kakabel (Celestial Sorrow): Well, well, well... Look who came back home for Christmas! It seems that the Prince of Stars has been spending the previous weeks doing some shopping. In celebration of his Father's birthday, he arrived early Christmas morning to Gem's mansion to deliver a buttload of presents to the family! Perhaps Santa Claus is really an angle in disguise? For whatever it is that Gem, Rei, Pleione, Mica, and even Fagan have been wishing for this holiday season ... it seems they got it! Not just one present, but dozens of presents. For everybody! Specially crafted presents were amongst the collection as well. For Gem, a heart-shaped locket slash music box charm; it plays a very special song and has a tiny portrait of Gem and Kakabel together; the words "You will always have my heart. -KB" are inscribed inside as well. For Rei, a pair of adamantine daggers enchanted with starfire magic; speak a secret command word and they flare to life and light. For Mica, a prayer book dedicated to Sentacer. For Fagan, a new cannon with different firing modes. And for Pleione, her very own miniature cat mansion.
Lyssa (Lyssa Bjornson): Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason. Lyssa spent the holidays with her family, her husband Odin and her children. She gave gifts of portrait dolls to her family members, which were very well received.
Melly (Melanie Wyndham/SMI Sweetie): The shy relief baker is relaxing from the bustle with the preparations for the Rhydin Family Charities benefit as well as the usual holiday business at Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery. Will she tend bar at the Silver Moon Inn again? The world may never know. Melly had a very enjoyable Yule celebration and plans to have an equally enjoyable celebration to ring in the new year.
Micarryl (Still More Drow): Fol lodias fridj xun naut inbau s'ck, saph Mica. Fol lodias fridj zhal'la naut inbau s'ck, lu' Rei zhah uss d' nindolen. Ol zhahus phla'ta ulu kyorl l' kitrye-mirshann atsar natha faerl 'flu', lu' Mica belbaus kyon ulu ukta hwuen uk zhahus phor ol. Hurrah whol ushdui drill shanxxizz mirshannen!
Nicole Brock Anorlasvesseë (Nicole E Brock): Nicole and her lifemate, Anorlas (AnorIas), were in attendance at the annual Chistmas Eve family gathering in the manor house at Navarra Farms. The couple were also in attendance at Yule celebrations with Anorlas's family in Mellor where they make their home.
Business boomed this year for the pair, who own a jewelry shop in Rhydin. Jewelry seems to still be a great favorite for gifts to be given between sweethearts.
Pleione (Stellar Balinese): Christmas trees! Garland and tinsel and ornaments! Crumpled up wrapping paper! Apparantly Miss Bitchy Deluxe still has a touch of kitten in her. Hopefully Gem isn't too upset about the mess. For Pleione has been even more happy since Rei came through with his promise, and she hasn't been tormenting any of the people as often. Just inanimate objects. And now that she has her very own mansion, she's even happier than ever! Oh tuna!
RachaeI MacLeod (Rachael MacLeod): Just as many of her other siblings, Rachael and her mate, Sulrin (SMI Sulrin), were in attendance at the family gatherings at Navarra Farms. This was the first Yule for their Elfling, Limelenath. The parents took great pride in showing off what grandmother Colleen (PrlUnicorn) calls a bonnie fine lass.
Rhiannon Brock (Rhiannon D Brock): Rhiannon spent her first holiday away from the homestead with the Silver Moon's resident flirt bartender, Joker (Richard D Harker, SMI Joker). It seems she was well received by his mother. The eldest Mr. Harker didn't quite see Rhi as possible daughter-in-law material until the Christmas gifts were being opened. Joker was the recipient of a set of keys and a note that said, "Shaken not stirred. Look out front." With the devil's own smile on his face, Joker, followed by curious onlookers, headed out front to find a gift that Rhi had previously hinted about. A black Aston Martin Vanquish tied with a bright red ribbon was sitting in front of the Harker family home. A wink was exchanged between the pair as they silently wondered how many bricks Joker's father would be making.
Salvador (Peculiar Silence): Sal has been spending his winter holidays in extreme meditation. Aside from when he went with his father to Dris' family gathering over the weekend! That was a nightmare and a half. Fortunately he didn't experience any intense episodes of weirdness and Christmas went on without a hitch. Before leaving he wandered around Rhy'Din delivering a series of presents to various friends. Each of them received an amateur wood carving sculpture crafted from his own hands. He's had to keep himself busy somehow. Rei was given a carving of an angel. Mica was given a carving of an elf that somewhat looks like himself, even dark wood. Carolyn was given a carving of a tiger, stripes etched into it and all. He gave Aya a carving of a flute, too bad it doesn't really work. He dropped off a carving of a pair of sunglasses by Red's room door at the Silver Moon Inn, too bad he can't see through them. He carved a little dragon hatching out of an egg for Elaine. For Shadi he carved a white rose with a stem. For Dris he carved a little piano likeness. He carved a wooden likeness of a quill pen for his sort-of-sister Arienh. But for his father, instead of carving something, he bought a book on fairies -- since the man seems to be very interested in that subject lately. Maybe they'll be able to figure out some things together about Sal's own nature. Mozart was given a hollow wooden ball that Sal managed to squeeze a bell into so that when it rolls it jingles. Cinder was given a small table perch that he carved himself. And Batty was given a little house that he carved, it looks like a birdhouse, but it works. Boy, he has kept himself busy hasn't he?
Terrance Tomar-Duncan (Terrance Tomar): After spending a lovely but exhausting Yule with loved ones, Terry found himself cast in the role of plague rat when he was infected with a magical disease to bring home to just about everyone in his family. Needless to say he was not thrilled with that addition to his gift list, and he is still not finished apologizing to everyone. Zetarris (Zetarris): His first winter holiday season as a sane being with friends and family was better than any sappy old movie, and he was given the best gift of all; commitment from a special someone. He is keeping the details under his hat for now but has been extra cheerful and driving everyone nuts with spontaneous noogies and goofy made-up songs. Classifieds

With the creator's permission, we are welcoming one and all to read, write, and enjoy the glory that is storytelling through the use of message boards.
