The Blurb The Bundle of Sticks An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a faggot of sticks, and said to his eldest son: "Break it." The son strained and strained, but with all his efforts was unable to break the Bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful. "Untie the faggots," said the father, "and each of you take a stick." When they had done so, he called out to them: "Now, break," and each stick was easily broken. "You see my meaning," said their father.
Loyal subscribers ... Hello again to one and all! After nearly a month's worth of silence, I am overjoyed to once again be able to bring to you the roleplaying news you all share and love! For those of you who may not be aware, I have recently resolved a series of annoying technical difficulties that have left me incapable of accessing the internet for a good long while. The moment I returned I was bombarded with IMs from at least half a dozen friends and comrades in RPland demanding an explanation. To all of those who were worried and concerned, I owe you my thanks. Though I have said it before, I will say it again. Thank you for caring. It's good to know that there are still friendships between us, despite all things.
Since it has been so long since I have been able to spread word of our collaborations, I hope you do not mind the fact that this month's issue will be quite long. Several disturbing matters have been brought to my attention since my return. It seems that collaborations are not running as smoothly as they used to when I was around. Certainly they did not always run perfectly smooth, but they flowed a lot better at times when I had my chance to say a few words. So in this issue I will be speaking quite a few words. Most of the specifics have been detailed on my own personal Livejournal. Others have been revealed on The Circle as well. There are far too many specifics to go into in just this simple newsletter. So I leave it to all of you who might be curious to seek out the truth on your own. You'll be stronger people for doing so.
In my absence, quite a lot of roleplaying has progressed. I regret only that I have missed out on the good times that have been shared. A great deal of the news I have prepared for you is old news, but it is also new. Updates that were sent to me a month ago have been saved and are now accesible once again. I hope that you find this issue to be just as enjoyable as all the others you have read in the past. With all that said, let's move forward and get on with the news!
Storyline Spotlight The Farmer and His Sons A father, being on the point of death, wished to be sure that his sons would give the same attention to his farm as he himself had given it. He called them to his bedside and said, "My sons, there is a great treasure hid in one of my vineyards." The sons, after his death, took their spades and mattocks and carefully dug over every portion of their land. They found no treasure, but the vines repaid their labor by an extraordinary and superabundant crop.
A little over a month ago, and since that time, I have been working on gathering up as much information as humanly possible concerning a very complex and detailed storyline that a great number of players and characters are involved in. This week (month) I am happy to inform you that I believe I have enough to work with in presenting you some faqs. Yes, I misspelled that on purpose. Instead of rambling on with an intense opening, I am just going to go ahead and reveal to you the intricacies concerning Rhy'Din's very own Northedge Universtiy. As they have been presented to me, I give them to you, with just a minor bit of editing to make things more comfortable to the eye while reading.
Northedge and Northedge Academy: This area of Rhydin, approximately two miles north of "downtown," is home to several familiar inhabitants, including the Haradas (DonatelIo Harada and SmileFang), Seamus (Seamus Wylie), Rose (A Stray Rose) and Cat (Matakhat Cain), as well as many many more. It's a pleasant, almost suburban neighborhood, dotted with occasional shops but mostly homes, for all levels of income. The roads are almost up to modern code, with the buildings set well back, with generous yards and frequent patches of woodland. Probably the largest lot in the area is the home of Northedge Academy, formerly a factory that had been converted into an apartment complex, then was bought by Donatello Harada and converted further into one of Rhydin's few schools. It's a large, almost fortress-like building, four stories high and made of mostly sandstone, with gray stone detailing. Stables and dormitories are attached and a forest surrounds it on three sides, a wide, circular gravel driveway leading up to the front. It's a boarding school for K-12, mostly wealthy students, but with a few charity cases taken in every year, on the basis that every child deserves a chance to learn.
This was the information provided for us in an earlier issue of Ubique's Weekly (#23, 1-26-04). Since that time I have begged the masterminds responsible for even more information concerning the school and its many varied inhabitants. After a very long time, my efforts have been rewarded. I owe my thanks in part also to all of those who contributed their own questions concerning the school. Each inquiry has been addressed accordingly, and here are the answers:
Who are the teachers and what do they teach? We've generally been able to allow the players who have chosen to play students (and we appreciate all of you, believe me) to make up the names of their own teachers for their own classes. But when asked this question, I felt it was only fair to come up with a definative list that people can use. Will this cover every class? No. I'm not sure that's plausible in a school that is supposed to teach classes from kindergarten up. What I can do here is cover what teachers these particular age groups may be interacting with:
The list is quite enormous. The masterminds have divided them up according to categories, and I will do my best to present them in that similar format.

So concludes the list of teachers and professors. This is not of course the complete list as it stands. Players are encouraged to create their own NPCs and classes as might be necessary. Though, do be certain to double check with the masterminds if you have any ideas that you feel would be beneficial. Phew! And I'm just getting warmed up. Well ... we DID ask!
How are the semesters divided? Important Dates for the 2004-2005 School Year Tuesday, August 10: There will be a leadership activities day in which some students be involved. Parents will be notified by mail.

So concludes the largest of the lists. The masterminds want me to remind players that this is not quite yet all the information that there could be. They are at work creating a website in the future that will detail every last thing that we have missed out on here. Ubique's Weekly will keep you informed when that masterpiece is completed for your viewing pleasure. Until then ... there's more.
When do students receive their report cards, and how would we figure out what sort of grades they receive? The grades are decided via the player, but it works on the 91-100 A, 81-90 B, 71-80 C scale, with anything below a C a failure for the class. Report cards are presented at each quarter. In the future hopefully there will be a set date as to when each quarter ends.
What is the cost of tuition? All grade levels $6,800 per student for custodial families actively (2004-05 school year) $8,160 per student for families not actively supporting the school. Northedge Academy provides a family discount for a second, third, and fourth child attending Northedge. A second child's tuition is $200.00 less, a third child's tuition is $400.00 less, and a fourth child's tuition is $800.00 less than the amounts listed above. Financial aid is available, see below. The tuition is due in full in June for the next academic year. There are two options for payment.
1. Cash, check or credit card for total tuition. 2. Arrangements for monthly payments may be made through the office after financial data worksheets are completed and returned to the business office.
TEXT BOOKS AND FEES - Students purchase their own books. Totals range from $250 - $600 depending on course selection and requirements. An activity fee of $50 per family is due when books are purchased. A graduation fee is also due for seniors.
Uniforms from Parker Uniform Company are required for all grade levels.
The non-refundable registration fee is $400 per student.
An Applicant must:
• Score satisfactorily on the Northedge Academy Placement Test • Be in good standing, which normally means a “C” average, with all course work successfully completed • Have an average to above average record of citizenship, conduct and attendance from previous schools • Have evaluations from the previous school (Evaluation forms will be provided by Northedge Academy.) • Receive a recommendation from the elementary school principal. In the event that a student is not recommended for admission, Northedge Academy initiates a consultation with the custodial unit.
Is it necessary for attending students to live in the dorms? All students living out of a ten mile range or under school custody must live in the dorm rooms for their appointed grade level.
What are the dorms like? How are they built and allotted? The dorms are quads, on a 20 foot by 20 foot scale. Each student is provided with a work area of their own, that includes a desk, chair, and work lamp, and a bed, including administration approved bedding that complies with the Rhydin Code Fire Act 6. The buildings are arranged in pods of six dorm rooms to a floor, and three floors to a building, with fire escapes accessible from each dorm. A special note would be the quads themselves have been named, mainly from literature figures. I.E. The Laura Ingalls Quad, the Mark Twain Quad, the David Copperfield Quad, etc.
Are there any school programs of special note? Such as dances and theatrical productions? Even sports events? Below are a series of graphics and a listing of shows for the following year.
 Samples from Art Show 2003
The award winning Northedge Academy Prancing Unicorns Band offers a variety of activities throughout the year. In addition to music learning and performance, band membership provides opportunities for personal growth through student directed leadership. The students work hard and take pride in their many accomplishments, supported by the Band Booster parent organization.
The Prancing Unicorns Band is led by director Carolyn Donnel. Mrs. Donnell has had an impressive 22 years of instructional band experience that includes director positions at St. Andrews Catholic School, Dunbar Middle School, and Paschal High School.
Marching Band The Marching Band takes the field during halftime at all football games and performs at the home volleyball and basketball games and at pep rallies to support the athletic programs. The band competes in various marching competitions in the fall and has won three consecutive First Place trophies in the Rhydin Private School Music Educators Association (RPSMEA) State Marching Contest.
Symphonic Band Symphonic Band (concert season) follows marching season performing concerts at the school around Christmastime and in the spring. The students participate in auditions for RPSMEA All Regional Band and RMEA Region Band in the fall/winter. In the spring, the band participates in the RPSMEA Solo/Ensemble and Concert/Sight-reading Competitions and usually an out of county music festival. The band also performs at various school events such as senior awards and graduation ceremonies

How is magic handled at Northedge? Is there a Magical Studies Department? How are these and other such special talents encouraged? Well, the answer to this is no, and for some rather simple answers. They don't have any special courses for the training of or use of magic, and, as many student players know, there's a ban on magic being used on school grounds. 1.) The Deans wife, Sydney Harada, has a magical allergy that can be as fatal as a besetting to those that are inflicted with that. 2.) There are multible and various Towers of Magic, Schools of Magic, Hogwarts 1-1111111500000000 and rising out there. If the student in question has more a mind to magic, they can attend there. Northedge is strictly academic in nature.
However, there are some exceptions. Concerning students who possess magical powers and are otherwise unable to control them, some students make use of charms or other methods arranged by the family. If this criteria cannot be met, students are not permitted to attend. Period. So in essence, they aren't encouraged at all.
Why? This is the burning question that is perhaps on your minds as well. The masterminds themselves have considered perhaps people might be asking, "Why do we do it?" The above information is the result of HOURS of work on the part of the masterminds. So perhaps we might wonder why it is that they exhaust so much time and energy on a storyline as obviously elaborate as this! Their answers are ...
"Simple. We love it. We love the game and the people involved. We love what happens when a good player is given a chance along with other good players, and the beauty and depth that can inspire. Give them a place and give them free rein to create. So we present to you two level, certain playing fields in which you can have your characters interact. I'm not sure about Louisa, but being a force behind these fields, putting work into it and offering it up for others to use, is incredibly satisfying. This is my offer towards collaborative play. Thank you." -- Jess. Continued from page one: We asked the masterminds why it is they put so much time and effort into the construction of a storyline as intense as Northedge. And this is what the other had to say:
"Yeah, uh...same for me. You know, people make fun of us for being anal about things like the fact that the Rambling Rose has a patio rather than a porch, but the reason we get protective of those little details is the amount of work we put into them, so that other players will understand the picture we have in our heads. We enjoy putting that extra detail into the places we create, so that everyone can be on the same page when it comes to a setting. We've only ever had one room-squatter who was upset with being thrown out for disruption, and when he actually looked at the webpage, saw we'd paid for a domain name and spent all this work setting it up...he gave up. That, in a weird way, makes it worth it." -- Louisa.
As for myself, I'm sure not all of our questions have been answered. But that just leaves room for us to think back and toss out more. This is a prime example of what the dream of free-form cooperative chat-based roleplaying is all about. While the masterminds have the general idea, we the players are also partly responsible for helping shape their dreams into more tangible realities. Without other players backing up their efforts, I don't think that the Northedge storyline would be as complex as it truly is. Afterall, if we weren't curious enough to ask these questions, would they have been able to think of them on their own? I'm sure in time they would have. And I'm also certain that they are very grateful for the interest we all express in wanting to be involved with painting the larger picture in a clearer focus.
I would like to take this time finally to thank both Louisa and Jess for their time and effort. I have it on good authority that they are in the process of creating a webpage for the entire storyline. In the future, I will be certain to inform you all of when that masterpiece is ready for public viewing. Until then, let this be a part of your guide. If there are any other questions and comments concerning Northedge, do not hesitate to contact the masterminds. Either by e-mail or instant message, they are always available in some form or another. You can contact them through SmileFang & DonatelIo Harada in either of these ways. But keep in mind that they have indeed worked very hard to create the setting. Of course, they need you and your characters to properly set the stage. Be kind to each other. Help us to help you keep the dream alive and work cooperatively.
And with that being said, let's see how much more space we can occupy with all the fabulous news that has been neglected over the past month. This Just In
The Farmer and the Stork A Farmer placed nets on his newly-sown plowlands and caught a number of Cranes, which came to pick up his seed. With them he trapped a Stork that had fractured his leg in the net and was earnestly beseeching the Farmer to spare his life. "Pray save me, Master," he said, "and let me go free this once. My broken limb should excite your pity. Besides, I am no Crane, I am a Stork, a bird of excellent character; and see how I love and slave for my father and mother. Look too, at my feathers -- they are not the least like those of a Crane." The Farmer laughed aloud and said, "It may be all as you say, I only know this: I have taken you with these robbers, the Cranes, and you must die in their company."
Old news is still good news in most cases. Considering that I have been unable to share it for a little over a month, I have restructured the formatting just a bit for this week's issue of Ubique's Weekly. Included with each submitted update, I will be notating the specific date in which I received the information so that all of us can stay on the same track here. With that in mind, let's move onto our...

A Word from Our Sponsor: (Recorded from October 14, 2004) "I just wanted to take a moment to reflect and share a word.
We've had the Silver Moon Inn going for well over a year now. I've heard a lot of concern about dwindling numbers lately from a few people here and there. And, I'm sure you've all noticed, the staff roster is hardly what it used to be. By all rights, this place should just fold and be done with. The RDI is hosted once again, others have created rooms like the Rambling Rose Tavern... the original goal of this forum, to offer the community a structured, guarded, safe place to roleplay, is pretty much defunct. The ship's been left to sink and the rats have scurried off.
But you're all still here, and you're keeping the place going, without asking any thanks in return. You've all worked toward keeping the dream alive, and it really means a lot to me. I want to thank each and every one of you for giving the effort you've given. The dedication you've all shown throughout the drama and squabbling and rediculousness.
I can't say any more than, simply... thank you.

Fall Into Adventure: (Recent) The Kodiak Falls Office of Blackjack Adventures is open for business. Contact Administrative Director of Operations Irina Braeden to schedule an adventure package with Chasz Havery, BJA's resident Mudbogger (See Classifieds for more details).
The Blackjack Family would like to extend our gratitude to those who made our inaugural season such a success. As a token of our gratitude, summer clients will receive discounts on select fall packages. It's just our way of thanking you for your loyalty.
Full Moon Madness: (Recent) Just when things were starting to settle down and criminal activities were receeding ... Local Rhy'Din PD authorities have recently revealed to the media a series of unexplanable death occurrences that have taken place over the course of the past month. Animal attacks are on a rise since the middle of October. Several citizens have been found dead, torn to shreds, and abandoned in parks and alleyways across the city. Citizens are advised to lock their doors at night. Most particularly on the night when the moons are most full. Some "witnesses" have claimed that canine activity is at its highest during these times. Authorities can only advise citizens to be prepared when wandering the streets at night.
Haunted Hayrides: (Recent) The Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride events at Dr. Maranya Valkonan's ranch in October were a big success. The donations received went to fund various programs at Riverview Clinic where she works. Maranya and her gardener Jack Bishop are planning a Winter Wonderland event for December, the proceeds going to benefit programs at the Clinic.
On The Crime Beat: (Recent) Anyone with information on various cases, including the murders of Aileen Hodgeson, Dorothy Peterson, Becky Johnson, Howard Conway, Patricia Miller, Stella Donaldson, and Paul and Mary Hanson is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter. Red Dragon Inn News: (Recorded from November 11, 2004) In the words of our fellow editors: "The Red Dragon Inn is slowly returning to what it used to be. This is largely in part [due] to the veteran role players who have started showing up there in the evenings. We have even gained a few who didn't frequent the RDI BHF (Before Host Firing). They have added a lot to the room, with some interesting story lines and general role play chat.
"There are, however, those who think they're the epitome of role playing, but 'don't need' the guidelines or TOS. Those are the ones who are a problem. We are trying to teach the proper behavior in the room, but some just don't seem to 'get it.' They declare everyone except themselves and their cronies to be 'noobs,' which is the current buzzword for Newbie. It seems they make up their own rules as they go along despite what others try to tell them, and their way is the only way.
"Despite this, the level of role play has risen to the former level, and the number of people in the room now averages above what we had BHF.
"There may be hope for us yet!"
I have ventured over to the RDI a few times myself, and I will testify in favor of these claims. The RDI does seem to be slowly returning to its former glory. However, from what I have seen, it is not so horrific as the "glory" that it once was at times. There are a great deal of decent roleplayers who frequent the RDI. Indeed, there may be hope for us yet. In time, perhaps, the RDI will be another "hot spot" for players to frequent as it once was. And hopefully the better players. Rhydin Baywatch?: (Recent) Rhydin Shore Patrol is still investigating a massacre at what appears to have been a luau. Details on the shooting spree are being withheld by authorities. A total of twenty-six people were shot to death with a variety of weapons. Until further notice, a square mile of Rhydin's coast is closed to the public.
Rhy'Din Yellow Pages: (As of November 15, 2004) Through discussion amongst players about the terrible confusion that transpires concerning precisely what it is that each individual character in Rhy'Din does to pay the bills, a great idea has been born. I felt it would be beneficial to not only display this idea as a UW Advertisement, but also as a Headline. The details as to why this idea came into focus can be reviewd on The Circle (the specific post has been provided via hyperlink). In brief, the question arises, "Who can my character turn to when a certain job needs done?" Many of us have taken great care and have spent many hours devising backgrounds and occupations for our characters. With this in mind, it would only seem logical (and also cordial) to conclude that if your character needed a specific something done that he or she would turn to another player's character who can do just that. To not would be foolish and at times possibly even bigoted.
Therefore, Mutual Endeavors member and fellow storyline collaborator DarkAngelGenesis has taken it upon herself to collect as much information as humanly possible from all of you players in an effort to create Rhy'Din's very own Yellow Pages. Take a moment of your time one of these days and think about what it is your characters do for a living. What are their occupations? How do they make their money? Would other characters come to them in order to make use of their services? An example listing would be:
Rei: Openly - student at Northedge Academy, studies drama, plays football, occasionally works at the Rambling Rose Tavern. Covertly - pickpocket, con artist, and sneak thief.
Use your imaginations and help us to help you by providing all the details that you feel are necessary. In a future issue of Ubique's Weekly, I will be highlighting as much as I can. Perhaps we can even add this into a section of the Mutual Endeavors website. Please send all information to

Shameless Plug Rerun: (Updated since previous issue.) One of the greatest things about freeform chatroom roleplaying is that, in a sense, it is equivalent to writing one tremendous story with an overwhelming amount of collaborators! In essence, we are all writers. And as such I would like to take a moment to direct everyone's attention to a literary masterpiece that I had the privelage of reviewing my own self. The mastermind Mutual Endeavors member The Multifarious has been telling me of a book review he has been working on, and I can now tell you all that it is a completed work of wonderfully written prose. So allow me to direct your attention to the RPGnet: Review of Book of Erotic Fantasy (http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10739.phtml). This essay is not for the faint of heart or easily offended, however (as the introduction proclaims). Though I feel as adults we can appreciate this essay. Do enjoy! Thank you, Multi-mun, for allowing me to share this information with the rest of our readers!
And having shared it before, I am pleased to announce that it has had some promising responses. One in particular comes from another Mutual Endeavors member best known as Ma11ora. Though she does not often get the chance to play, she does express a growing interest in all that is going on in RPland. Some addictions are difficult to be rid of. Here is what she had to say: "Wow... I have been out of the loop. I had no idea this book had been written. Now I have to have it. Sad that someone beat me to writing it. Oh well... perhaps I'll write a better one later. Please tell Multi-mun that I really enjoyed reading his review. And thank him for bringing this book to my attention." I hope that suffices well enough as telling him. I agree, it's a book I think I may have to purchase myself one of these days.
With a Vengeful Flair: (Recorded from October 17, 2004) Over the past two weeks there has been a rash of deadly incidents in the main offices and holding quarters of the SA and other slave related companies. A singular survivor has been left at each attack, each with a debilitating injury that prevented an alert to the proper authorities. The General of the attackers has been identified as a woman with a thick poor English accent. There is little more known of the others, all the incidents being done astride horses and in black cloaks. Through the son of a slaver, later found strapped to die on a whipping post, came a message.
"This is not a warning. We are past the time of warnings. I spare your life just so you may take to your kinsman a promise. He who shall keep, sale, or train slaves shall die by it. He who condones it shall be punished. We will not have slavery anymore in our countryside, of any kind, and shall seek beyond it's borders if we must to accomplish this. Do not think we will not find you. A bleak future is visited on you now. Go and tell them. " The damages to a recent dockside offices attack were estimated in the thousands. These criminals are wanted for murder in the first, arson, vandalism, and theft of property. If seen, do not approach, contact your local authorities.
In Other News... The Frog and the Ox "Oh Father," said a little Frog to the big one sitting by the side of a pool, "I have seen such a terrible monster! It was as big as a mountain, with horns on its head, and a long tail, and it had hoofs divided in two."
"Tush, child, tush," said the old Frog, "that was only Farmer White's Ox. It isn't so big either; he may be a little bit taller than I, but I could easily make myself quite as broad; just you see." So he blew himself out, and blew himself out, and blew himself out. "Was he as big as that?" asked he.
"Oh, much bigger than that," said the young Frog.
Again the old one blew himself out, and asked the young one if the Ox was as big as that.
"Bigger, father, bigger," was the reply.
So the Frog took a deep breath, and blew and blew and blew, and swelled and swelled and swelled. And then he said: "I'm sure the Ox is not as big as..." But at this moment he burst.
There is still quite a bit of information left yet to share. And once again a great deal of it comes in the form of individual Character Updates for the events that have transpired within the past month. As I have with the Headlines I will provide all of the information I have compiled in sequence of the dates in which I received them. So without further ado, here they are!
Ahriman (TheAngraMaiynu): (Recent) There are many devious plans being unfolded thanks to this Primal Evil. In addition to the usual plagues, children had been dying at an unusually high rate at the hospital Maranya Valkonan works. This went on for several weeks before a couple of celestials recently freed from Hell took notice and decided to lend her a hand. They set up wards to protect the hospital along with the help of a deity who goes by the name of Melekalale Melarrna. If this were not enough, rumor has it that a little gnomish chronomancer was found dead and an artifact he had in his possession called the Thief of Time was stolen. The gnome's tower was filled with locusts and some say that Ahriman might have had something to do with this.
Anna (AriannaRavenwood): (Recent) The blue sister has seemed to disappear from the public eye this past month. There's no word on whether Arianna has returned to her husband's clan lands to rejoin her husband Galen (Galen Ravenwood) and her son Brion, if she will remain in Rhydin a bit longer, or where she is, in fact.
Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana): (Recent) The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands. Ariana actually ventured out in the public eye recently a few times to the Silver Moon Inn. On one visit, she spoke with Thorm (GuthormOthinsson) and another friend about taking care of a certain Orc problem. Her canines (Grand Menagerie) accompanied her on one of those visits to the SMI. Ariana looked after the Silver Moon Inn a few times recently, at least once as a favor to a certain tender. The green sister not only prevented a recent kidnapping of a family member at the SMI, but she was involved in a giant battle. After these appearances, Ariana has pretty much stayed out of the public eye, save to work at her Bakery as usual.
Calypso (Lady Proudfoot): (Recent) Her gracious and royal magesty is considering blessing her new household with some kittens, but is still trying to decide who out of her many suitors will be the lucky sire.
Carmine (TaciturnMerc): (Recent) He came to the conclusion that he needed a vacation away from the mercenary life and has decided to take one. He has been spending time quietly at home living off of the savings that he has managed to collect over his many years. He is still trying to figure out his son, and secretly thinks that his son has taken after his mysterious mother completely in every way. He wonders if there is a spark of himself somewhere in his child, but is having trouble seeing it. Finding this a disturbing revalation, and one that is causing him to not be as close to his child as he possibly could be, he has decided to quietly go somewhere and figure this out, without a single word to anyone. In other words, Carmine the taciturn mercenary is actually considering therapy for himself! That is a secret that he will guard from all, even his lover Dris. He has not told anybody about this decision yet, or acted on it. It remains to be seen what he will actually do.
Chief Haverack (ChiefHaverack): (Recent) Rhydin's finest (and only) Animal Control officer struggles on to stop abuse toward the dumber beasts and preventing the Dangerous Critters (Drow, trolls, orcs, gobs, carnivoristic fae/fae, dire wolves, dire rats, moon rats, ogres, giants, dragons, imps, zombies, vampires, demons, etc.) from becoming a nuisance. Recently he has become the Manager of the Rhydin Menagerie as well. Splitting his time between the shelter, zoo, and other duties is running the 'troll' haggard but he tries to not let it show.
Colleen MacLeod (PrlUnicorn, SMI Colleen): (Recent) There are rumors abounding that more additions will be made to Collie's family in the near future, but no one is saying for sure if it's children or by marriage. She was heard saying something about helping with baby linens for her granddaughter, Eileen's, home.
Collie's been keeping busy at Navarra Farms with her son, Ian MacLeod, attending to the newest foals born there. A good crop of them have arrived recently and all ranch hands as well as the lady of the manor have been kept quite busy.
Deputy Marshall Wynter (Rachael Wynter): (Recent) The scarred law woman in black continues to work on wrapping up certain investigations (see Headlines). Rachael received information about a recent series of ritualistic murders from an anonymous informant and is currently investigating this lead. She is also working closely with Doctor Nigel Newborn from RCSI on this case. The Deputy Marshall recently celebrated her 34th birthday on the 11th of November the same way she has the past four years, on the job, Serving and Protecting.
Dechirant and Fayalki (Dechirant, Fayalki): (Recent) Dey has found herself peripherally involved in the events surrounding Talitha, Rand and Levrette Alonin, Free, the DeAusters and others. This is because she has been employed by Rand, Levrette and a necromancer who own Doux Caprice, to order, restore and translate the volumes and journals there. Accepting a position at the castle's library had always been such a quiet job these past five years, and the castle has been virtually empty--until now.
Fayalki, Dey and Bayland (Dey's brother) extended thanks to everyone who attended their 4th annual Masquerade at Renier Manor. Incredible costumes and creativity shone brightly once again this year. They had a King of Fools (Jester), a vulpine, a Dwarfess, Death, A veiled dancer, a dashing swashbuckler, Lawrence of Arabia, a Man in Tights, Jack O Shadows and a marble figure come to life--amazing!
Our thanks to those guests and the others whom I may have forgotten. Ebon Ilnaren guessed six of the costumes correctly to win the golden quill award for most correct answers. Fayalki and Dey are now busily planning their 5th annual Winter Festival. As always, everyone will be invited, and if you do not receive an invitation, it is simply because one of their messengers went astray.
Dey's heartsister, Sylvia had splendid news to relate regarding next year. Both of their sons, Cian and Yahuchi (Little Wolf) turn one year old later this month, on the same day.
Lastly, Dey was delighted to see Lucien (Lucky) returned to the inn. Although he is more somber and now wears a beard, he showed some of the joie d'vivre he is famous for by nearly dancing Dey's toes off. Hopefully, brighter times are ahead for all.
Diana Lasher (Fragile Fury): (Recent) Commander Lasher has been preparing her unit for some well deserved R&R for the December holiday season. Many of Rhydin's denizens celebrate several holidays at this time of year. Misfit Squadron will be off duty from 12 December until 9 January.
Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan (Maranya Valkonan): (Recent) She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn. The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic. Maranya is very pleased with the landscaping on her ranch and the success of the Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride events there. She also made a few visits to the Rambling Rose Tavern recently to relax. Certain unsolicited donations for programs at the Riverview Clinic from some of the Tavern's patrons were especially welcome. However, the combined strain of keeping up with her busy schedule overall, along with investigating a series of mysterious deaths among some of her young cancer patients and pondering a drastic change of employment continues to take its toll on the good Doctor.
Dris (BardGaIIant): (Recent) Over the past month the bard's life has been insane! At least, that's the way he thinks of it. Due to overwhelming stress levels that have risen, he recently turned in his resignation to end his part-time employment at the Silver Moon Inn. However, he has decided to keep the namebadge that was given to him by his heart mother Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren), and just in case he decides to return to the drink-slinging occupation. Helping raise Carmine's son is enough of a job for both of them, and recently he has felt left to fend for himself. The mercenary has much to his dismay become more reclusive. Even so far as hanging up his belt! Dris has been at his wits end, but he won't show that to anyone. There have been times in which he has needed a little escape of his own, and when seen in public he has been nothing short of jovial.
What he isn't telling anyone is that he feels that his relationship with Carmine is breaking apart. They have spent less and less time together since the surprise of the Spaniard's son. Personally, the only thing that Dris can see in the boy is the physical similarities. Though he has been trying very hard to probe through the layers and layers of mental and empathic defenses the boy has wrapped tightly around himself. Despite his efforts at trying to be a good parent, he thinks that he is fighting a losing battle. Depression is bound to come from all of this. All he can do is hope that somehow the family will find a common ground to stand on in the future and work on patching things up.
Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik): (Recent) No sign of everyone's favorite, friendly, neighborhood psychopath these days. However, there has been evidence of activity. On the back wall inside nearly every closet in Rhy'Din there is a note either tacked or taped there. Every one of them reads the same thing. "No Tresspassing! Solicitors will be zapped on sight! Please do not disturb!"
Elaine (Elaine Aqua): (Recent) No solo exploring jaunts for Elaine at all. She did visit the Silver Moon Inn with her Ma recently, though. The eleven year old misses Beauty but is consoled by taking care of Empress Emerald of Grayfur's kittens, though she's a bit grumpy that she's not allowed to name the kittens. Elaine really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.
Emmy (Empress Grayfur): (Recent) The Empress Emerald of Grayfur has been a very busy mommy. Her kittens are now five weeks old and already starting to express an interest in exploring and bonding. Though they aren't allowed or capable of going too very far yet. Emmy is very protective of her kittens and still is not permitting any other felines near them. However, she has become more tolerant of the "humans" who want to check them out. Most especially Elaine, regardless of the fact that she is growing tired of explaining why her kittens should not be named yet.
Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random): (Recent) There have been no sightings of this most elusive entity within the past month. Her kin have also been unusually quiet for some reason. Perhaps the High Courts are in session, at least concerning them. As for Faye herself, it is expected that she is making preparations for the nearing Winter. So much work, so little time.
Fury (ReversedHaIo): (Recorded from October 13, 2004.) Fury hasn't been around at all. It would seem that her home one evening just sort of disappeared with nary a trace of a house even being there in the first place. Which leads one to wonder what is she up to now and where has she gone?
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): (Recent) In this week's installment, other than attending a Halloween party at Northedge Academy, there's been no news of note or actual sign of this native Rhydin resident around anywhere. Stay tuned.
Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue): (Recent) The groundskeeper for the Valkonan Ranch has been spending most of his time cleaning up after the Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride festivities. There is still a lot of work to be done, and despite his affinity for nature he can understand why normal people make such absurd messes. Currently he is planning, collecting, blueprinting, and conspiring every last detail necessary to create a Winter Wonderland during the month of December. With only half a month left, he has his work cut out for him!
Johnny Hellshot (Johnny Hellshot): Still missing and presumed dead. Yee is still the primary suspect though he seems to have forgotten this.
Joker (SMI Joker, Richard D Harker): (Recent) The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn worked his normal shift this week. Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker). The elder Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan). The flirtatious bartender does get one of his trademarked goofy grins whenever a certain ring's mentioned, though he's definitely not keeping up with the current trends to rush into any kind of committed relationship with Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock). Joker prefers to take things slow and easy.
Jules (Jules Braeden): (Recent) Between college, her new boyfriend, and a new business she has started up, she has not been seen much. She is also busily working helping her sister out with some legal difficulties. Evidence has been collected and sent on to the proper channels that will help her sister out.
Kakabel (Celestial Sorrow): (Recent) There have not been very many public sightings of the Prince of Stars these past few weeks. None at all in fact. Kakabel has been very busy planning out after school lessons for his son, as well as figuring out how to fit more time into his busy schedule to be with his family just for personal enjoyment. He has seen very little of Gem, who appears to have become rather reclusive these days. Though he does try to make it a point to find his way to her bed once dawn rises. The best time for him to rest, not that he needs it. Hopefully he can steal Gem away to himself one of these days for some much needed leisure time and conversation. He is of the opinion that something is bothering her, but he is not quite sure what.
Lyssa (Lyssa Bjornson): (Recent) Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason.
Mallora (Ma11ora): (Recent) Mallora's been out and about a few times, minus the triplets, who are reported to have turned 14 months old as of November 14th of this year.
Matakhat Cain (Matakhat Cain): (Recent) It's official. She's engaged. Stephen Valkonan proposed to Cat and presented her with a beautiful emerald and diamond engagement ring to which she, with much joy and without hesitation, said yes. The two have decided that they'll do the smart thing and wait to do their vows until after Cat has finished college. Speaking of which, she's been spending time, although probably not enough, studying for midterms. Other than that, she's looking forward to the coming holidays. It's the young collegiate favorite time of the year and she delights in having family around so she persuaded Donatello to allow her to ask his rather large, loud and terminally hectic family to come to Northedge for Christmas. They've agreed, much to Donatello's dismay. It'll be a Harada Family Christmas at Northedge this year.
Melly (Melanie Wyndham): (Recent) The shy relief baker at Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery tended bar at the Silver Moon Inn again recently. Will she do it again? The world may never know.
Mithril/Gadreel/Lusus (ASaintOfSinners): (Recent) Mithril has not been seen in the public eye much lately. He was seen attending a Halloween party with Terrance, and he went dressed as the devil. He was quite amused for some strange reason when he lost the costume contest. He also has been seen roaming about town taking inventory of the stock of various warehouses, assisting some people in finding stable employment throughout Rhydin, and making various purchases for some upcoming wedding receptions. Mozart (Amadaeus Felidae): (Recent) The cat is being good! Very, very good. So good that he has not told Carmine about the pet bat that Salvador has been seen with, and has left Dris alone. Could it be that he is being bribed? The world may never know. Parhi Grimjaws (The Multifarious): (Recorded from October 14, 2004.) Parhi Grimjaws heard Yee's news that Johnny Hellshot was dead, and kind of twisted his arm into leading her out to the site. She isn't really a trained investigator, but she does have senses of almost draconic discrimination, and has confirmed that Johnny is dead. Enough of his body remained to confirm that, but he was clearly picked over post-mortem by scavengers. Parhi put as many of his body parts she could find into a magical belt-pouch of hers, memorizing as much of the environment as possible for the use of law-enforcement. She has informed Yee that if he was indeed responsible for Johnny's death, or holds out on her in any way, she is going to salt a silver blade and peel his skin.
To recap: Johnny Hellshot is dead, and Parhi is going back to serious bad temper. Well at least this time she has a reason -- Johnny was one of the few people who might have tempted her to sleep with him.
Pleione (Stellar Balinese): (Recent) The TRUE Queen of Quellarin has been out prowling. She does not quite like this entire concept of being trapped in a pocket dimension. Has not liked it for some time. In fact, she's a little put off with the fact that she was overlooked when it came down to giving residents keys to exit and enter at will. Therefore, she has not been a very friendly kitty these days.
Rachael MacLeod (RachaeI MacLeod): (Recent) Rachael and her lifemate, Sulrin (SMI Sulrin), became the parents of a baby girl, Limelenath (The name is Sindarin for "Sparkling Stars"), on 21 Oct. The little one came into the world with the help of her aunt, Rhiannon (Rhiannon D Brock).
Rei (AmethystStarfall): (Recent) The normally very social Rei has dropped out of the public eye. He has been concentrating on his schoolwork and whipping the football team into the best shape it could possibly hope to be in. He also has been doing his fair share of studies on an elven trickster deity that his mother is said to worship. So far he is as irreverent as ever, and chances are good that he will remain this way for a good long time. Perhaps forever.
Rekah (BIackTideRising): (Recent) Some time within the past two weeks, citizens have claimed to have sighted this most elusive youth of Rhy'Din. It is rumored that she was in the company of an odd young boy at the Red Dragon Inn one night.
Rhiannon D. Brock (Rhiannon D Brock): (Recent) Rhi is still keeping company with the SMI's resident flirt of a bartender, Joker (Richard D Harker, SMI Joker).
Some time ago, Rhi was overheard telling Sylus (Lutzaramus) that she and Joker had tied the knot. It's hard to say if this is true or if Rhi was just trying to get the nosy-parker off their backs. Seems the fellow makes a habit of butting into their business and had continually harassed Joker about when he was going to propose to the lady.
Rhi and Joker are both sporting gold rings, but it could simply be a promise of things to come for the couple. If anyone knows for certain, they haven't spoken up.
Last week, Rhi had been speaking to Lenika (Lenika Marshall, SMI Lenika) about her plans for Joker's birthday on 22 November. Word is Ariana (SMI Ariana) will be baking a sugarless triple layer chocolate cake for the occasion. Pictures were shuffled away hastily before Joker could get a peek at his gift.
Salvador (Peculiar Silence) |
