Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #56 ~ 21 September 2004
The Blurb Hello again to one and all! This week's issue is nothing too spectacular. After working long hours and fighting that vile beast known as insomnia, my energy for creative writing has dwindled to an all time low. As most of you have seen, I have not been out playing much. Two major things to blame this on. The first being this awfully slow recovery from an evil flu bug of some sort. Thank my husband for that. The second thing to blame is the addition of a new gaming console into my household.
The first year wedding anniversary was suprisingly the hardest thing I have ever had to shop for. I hate shopping as a rule, and so my task was unsuprisingly troublesome. Traditionally, the first wedding anniversary is known as the "paper anniversary." Most families just give their loved ones money and such. The most we got were some phone calls, some cards, and some lovely notes online from friends. My husband bought me the Complete Chronicles of Narnia, written by one of my favorite writers of all time -- Lewis Carroll. The only thing I could think of to get my husband was a receipt. But what a receipt it was, let me tell you.
Two days ago I allowed him to get his anniversary/birthday present out of layaway. And we now have a PS2. Finally! Along with it, I got him Final Fantasy X. So far, the most addicting game I have ever played. Fortunately it keeps the grumpy monster at bay and gives me more freedom to be online. Unfortunately, I have been far too captivated watching him play and playing myself that I have not been online as much as I could have. I'll try in the future not to let that addiction rule supreme, as I have a LOT of storyline ideas running through my head nonstop recently.
But I'm sure you're all sick of reading my random ramblings. There's a decent amount of news to be shared with you this week. Not a tremendous amount, but still great! My thanks go out to all of you who took the time to submit something this week. As always, I hope to receive a hell of a lot more for next week. With 38 names on the mailing list, I'm sure there is a lot more news to be shared than I have been seeing. What has everyone been up to!? Well ... let's see.
Storyline Spotlight Still waiting on a response from my SUBTLE HINT from last week. It is starting to become a sad, sad day in the role-playing world. Lack of communication abounds. Nobody's writing e-mails back and forth anymore to keep stories running even behind the scenes. For stories to be told well, information needs to be presented. I get the feeling that somewhere during my long absence a knife was wedged between player groups. A knife so dull that it could not cut through the thickness of the air. Can we really dislike each other so strongly that we lack the essential basics of communication? Ah well... I shouldn't rage so. Hopefully next week (I do a lot of hoping don't I?), I'll have something to share in this spot.
This Just In At least there are some storylines that are moving right along. The Headlines for this week aren't too terribly impressive, but at least there are some group collaborations going on. Thank you to all of you who contributed and played along so far.
Headlines
Deli of Dasterdly Deeds: Police are outraged and puzzled by the gruesome murder of one Dorothy Peterson, age 32. She was an employee at the Five Coins Deli, and at the time of her murder was two months pregnant. She was found stapled to the side of the building in a ritualistic position, and was apparently tortured before her demise. Investigators have been mostly tight-lipped concerning this new atrocity, but there are some vocal enough to speculate that this crime may be related to the current outbreak of serial killings Rhy'Din-wide. Anyone with further information concerning the death of Dorothy Peterson (as well as the deaths of Becky Johnson, Howard Conway, Patricia Miller, and Stella Donaldson) is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter as soon as possible.
Fall Into Adventure: The Kodiak Falls Office of Blackjack Adventures is open for business. Contact Administrative Director of Operations Irina Braeden to schedule an adventure package with Chasz Havery, BJA's resident Mudbogger (See Classifieds for more details).
The Blackjack Family would like to extend our gratitude to those who made our inaugural season such a success. As a token of our gratitude, summer clients will receive discounts on select fall packages. It's just our way of thanking you for your loyalty.
Hanson Hangings: Saturday morning the local Rhy'Din Police Department was alarmed to find two mutilated bodies hanging from the overhang just outside the front door of the station. Early morning passersby were quickly ushered off the streets in front of the station the moment that Deputy Chief Gordon Miller arrived on the scene. In a press release, Chief Miller stated that "while the suspect behind this atrocity have yet to be discovered, we can verify for certain that he or she is the one responsible for a series of other killings city-wide." He had no further comment on the matter aside from instructing citizens to lock their doors at night and "play it safe."
Coroner reports indicated that the two butchered and hanged bodies were once mother and father Paul and Mary Hanson. Survived by children Jill, Jimmy, and Susan. It is reported that Paul and Mary Hanson were responsible for a series of child molestation and prostitution charges that have been investigated to no end for quite some time. Reports indicate that the two daughters have been relocated to Child Protective Services, while the whereabouts of the son are unknown.
Investigators are uncertain of their feelings on this matter, but all agree that it is a relief that they are no longer in action. There were two notes found on the bodies of the deceased, each written in verse lines. The message clearly stated in our best translation that, "This is what happens to bad mommies and daddies." No fingerprints were found, and no further evidence that can conclude who the sick individual bent on "justice" is for certain. However, many investigators believe that the suspect is the same one responsible for other unsolved murders throughout Rhy'Din. Anyone with further information on these cases is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter as soon as possible.
On The Crime Beat: Anyone with information in the case of the murder of one Larry "Grabber" Nelson, a perpetrator previously charged with five counts of aggravated assault and two counts of petty theft, around the Silver Moon Inn as of February 29th, 2004, the kidnapping of Irina Braeden on March 21st, 2004, the alleged assault of Morgan Knight at the Silver Moon Inn on April 6th, 2004 and the murder of Paul and Mary Hanson is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter.
Organized Oddities: Pairs and small groups of Hill Giants have been observed roaming the streets of Rhydin looking for Sulrin, apparently for terribly unpleasant purposes. They have no manners, but they do have the ability to throw rocks hard enough to turn walls into piles of toothpicks. The big bullies are probably from the Gang up North, and this is probably connected to the Giant Sulrin killed last month.
Rhydin Baywatch?: Rhydin Shore Patrol is still investigating a massacre at what appears to have been a luau. Details on the shooting spree are being withheld by authorities. A total of twenty-six people were shot to death with a variety of weapons. Until further notice, a square mile of Rhydin's coast is closed to the public.
In Other News... Once again the number of individual Character Updates outnumbers the amount of Headlines this week. But that is to be expected. With a little over 126 characters listed on the template, I am steadily hoping for many more. But as I've mentioned, I do far too much hoping. Thank you to those of you who took the time to contribute this week. Here's this week's character news!
Ahriman (TheAngraMaiynu): He has quite firmly dropped out of the public eye. That is either a good or a bad thing depending on how one looks at it.
Anna (AriannaRavenwood): The blue sister stayed out of the public eye this past week. There's still no word on whether Arianna will return to her husband's clan lands to rejoin her husband Galen (Galen Ravenwood) and her son Brion or if she will remain in Rhydin a bit longer.
Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana): The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands. A strange messenger brought word to Ariana about the fate of her son Banshee. She traveled to discover her son's fate. She refuses to talk about other events that occurred there and currently works at her Bakery as usual.
Azazel (Erubescite): Az's servants pray he will lay his eggs soon. His new favorite whine is "why can't I have alcohol if I'm not human?!" and his appetite has this week demanded and claimed spray paint, Thai food, several cases of Mason jars, starfruit, golf balls, pyrite, malachite, labradorite, kyanite and a banjo. Who knew he'd be so high maintainance? ...everybody that knows him.
Calypso (Lady Proudfoot): She has settled in quite nicely. Someone out there definitely knows how to treat feline royalty.
Carmine (TaciturnMerc): What is a father to do when he has an unstable son? The answer, go find this son in person and just be there as best as he can. Sal it would seem had some sort of psychological and physiological reaction in the Silver Moon Inn thanks to being molested by a shapeshifter. He was assisted by Terrance who lent him the use of his phone so that he could call Dris and both explain what was going on and remain calm about all of this. After the doctor, one Maranya Valkonan stabilized his son, he was given a ride home by Terrance. He took his son to see her the next day and is working out a payment plan as it seems he might have to take his child to the doctor with alarming frequency. One thing he plans to do is find himself a panther and take payment out of his hide for what he has done.
Cassiel (InvertedDarkness): Heavenly duties have kept the angel far too busy to go out, so there is very little news on this one this week.
Cheriour (HeIIishHunter): Following Rei's collapse at the Silver Moon last week, the cherub has been taking every available opportunity to visit the boy and keep his morale up. At least, until an increase in his usual phone-jockeying dropped him out of sight toward the end of the week.
Deputy Marshall Wynter (Rachael Wynter): The scarred law woman in black is working on wrapping up certain investigations (see Headlines). She's frustrated in her efforts because to date no one has yet to come forward with any information. Rachael continues to investigate a long-standing case which involves child and adult prostitution, child endangerment, child abuse, drugs and other illicit activities, as well as the disturbing information from Carvenhorn (Horned Hunter) about a gang of Giants operating to the north of Rhydin and a series of ritualistic murders.
Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan (Maranya Valkonan): She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn. The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic and continues to consult with Doctor Jacobs about a mutual patient. Maranya is very pleased with the landscaping on her ranch. Along with a few visits to the Rambling Rose Tavern to try to relax, she made an emergency late night housecall to the SMI to treat one of her new patients, Salvador (Peculiar Silence). So far, the good Doctor is making slow progress with the young man's therapy, but the strain of keeping up with her busy schedule overall is beginning to take its toll. She quietly celebrated her twenty-seventh birthday this past Saturday at her ranch.
Dris (BardGaIIant, SMI Dris): In light of recent events, the bard is seriously reconsidering taking up his post again at the Silver Moon Inn. Meaning he isn't quite sure he wants to return to work there. Especially with all the commissions he's been receiving. But even more so due to the fact that he has had to spend most of his time consoling his lover about the situation concerning the man's son. This experience is reminding him immensely how much work it takes to be a father, but it is also reminding him how rewarding the experience can be. He has been considering visiting the Temple of Love and Ecstasty in hopes of earning some time with his own estranged children. Fault all his own. Age is catching up with him it seems.
Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik): Ehz has paid a couple of visits to the Silver Moon Inn lately. Maybe she's getting bored out there in Limbo? Rumor has it that she tried to get cuddely with a certain ex-demon and ex-fairie prince. Neither of them took too kindly to her philosophy of love and be loved. However, she did discover the existence of a Grey PuPu who seems to be spending a lot of time at the SMI! Her personal opinion is that more people need to eat more soap.
Elaine (Elaine Aqua): Elaine is hitting the books once again as school's started for her at Northedge Academy. No exploring jaunts for the ten year old this week. Elaine really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.
Emmy (Empress Grayfur): The Empress Emerald of Grayfur has been spending more and more time nesting. It should only be a matter of time...
Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random): The spirit of entropy was alerted to the presence of one of the Lost. Perturbed by the facts of Keledon's continued existence, she took matters into her own claws to check things out for herself. It is unclear whether or not she is pleased or displeased with Mithril's claim of charge over the entity, but rumor has it she is spending less and less time mingling with the masses.
Gem (Gemethyst): Gem is feeling better about things with her son. She delights in all the chances she has of seeing him, but the trouble is she does not seem to get to do that often. She is very proud of him and his efforts at the school, and she is quietly pleased with the friendship that he and Mica have going. Mica seems to need it just as much as Rei does. She is feeling a growing fondness for the young Drow. She and her son have definite differences, certainly different opinions, but she is hopeful they will work out better ways of communicating those, and less misunderstandings. She has been very careful not to crowd him, for she is uncertain of her welcome...she cannot forget how he did not know her. She is sure she is still rather a stranger in his eyes, and she is terrified of stepping over a boundary and chasing him away with her Mother love, thinking it will be too much for him. From a relative stranger. Pardon the pun.
On another note, she is worried about Sulrin. Two thugs came to the RDI looking for them. She misdirected them to the less well known inn, the Grinning Griffin. Later, she went to the Rambling Rose and found there were giants there, also looking for Sulrin. She was deeply amused and delighted to hear her son misdirect that pair to the Medieval Tavern. And then later yet, she went to the SMI with her son and Mica, where yet two more giants were asking about Sulrin. There was a battle with a horny dwarf and the giants...until Collie cleverly set up an illusion outside of a Giantess. Even the dwarf wanted her. Gem told one of the giants that Sulrin had picked up and moved south, on a fast boat. One can only hope Sulrin will successfully avoid them.
She also met an interesting character that night. A friend of Rei's. Named Jimmy Red. He seemed to want to hit on Gem, and her son of course took great exception to that. He seems to think Gem should not be dating at all. Ever. She has not seen Kakabel since the night his memory returned, and she is fretting that he may have changed his mind about maybe getting back together. She has parted from Keun, who took it nobly, that now Kabe was back, she was going to see if that relationship could be ressurected. Only time will tell.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): In this week's installment, the news of note for this native Rhydin resident is she's still slowly recovering from the flu this week and she's being sued for damages by the person who's been behind the plot to keep her from drawing her comic book. The flu hasn't kept her from going out a couple of nights, though. Stay tuned.
Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue): Since the completion of the Great Landscaping Project on Doctor Valkonan's Ranch, the bunnyboy has been searching for new things to do. Some plans in the making are the creation of a Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride. It is rumored that he is also trying to figure out some ways to help relieve the good doctor's increasing stress levels. Such as leaving twenty-seven bouquets of vased seasonal flowers on her doorstep for her birthday.
Jim Smith (TheSpiritRemains): For some reason now he's wandering around with a book of Emily Dickinson poetry and a big grin.
Johnny Hellshot (Johnny Hellshot): The poor pyromancer was nexus-napped to an alternate dimension. A dimension where almost every being had special powers but those who came by their powers naturally were hunted and maligned like villains. Since Johnny came by his powers the old fashioned way...well he wasn't happy. Johnny called out to the Spirit of Fire for assistance, thankfully Puriel heard him and rescued him. Johnny returned to Rhydin naked and confused. After being dressed he attempted to hug Puriel in thanks, rebuffed by Puriel's brother Johnny left. It has taken some time but Johnny is finally feeling 'back to normal' and likely to get back to his former shennanigans and the pursuit of work. He's going to give exploring his powers a break and just try to live like a normal person for a while...yeah right.
Joker (SMI Joker, Richard D Harker): The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn worked his normal shift the past week. He is, however, planning to take Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock) on another private getaway weekend in the future, so he may be asking the Jadeskinned dollface for another favor. Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker). The elder Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan).
Jules (Jules Braeden): The only news offered is that Jules has been quite busy building some sort of inter galactic communications device and that is why she has not been seen lately. She refuses to explain what she needs such a thing for.
Kakabel (Celestial Sorrow): The reascended Prince of Stars has been growing more and more concerned over the matter of his son Rei. Since the chaos that occurred at the Silver Moon Inn this past week, he was worried whether or not he should have allowed his son to throw that weekend party. However, he is pleased that nothing terrible occurred that evening. Rumor has it he is planning more intense lessons. Worrying over his son and worrying over his relationship with Gem seem to be the primary factors ruling his life. There are many plans in the work. Many, many plans...
Lyssa (Lyssa Innes): Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter has recently discovered some surprising news about an addition to her Duties during her visits to the Silver Moon Inn, the Rambling Rose Tavern and another Tavern. She continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason.
Mallora (Ma11ora): Mallora, her family and followers are doing very well after celebrating the first birthday of her triplets, Julian Alexandre, Andrea Jolie, Alexandra Juliette Camale - de Medici, on the 11th of Sept. They had a large party in the temple and are still cleaning up after the big bash!
Melly (Melanie Wyndham): Will the shy relief baker at Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery ever tend bar at the Silver Moon Inn? The world may never know.
Micarryl (Still More Drow): Gi ussta yah, vel'bol natha phla'ta blyntangi. Sanguinen kev vlos pholor nintan wun l' sreen'aur el'inssring, Rei neera s'ck wun l' myar uss. Gajak, verin hiranen morfeth natha malar gaer. L' er'griff bwael aglust zhahus...al, nindel zhah natha szeous.
Mithril/Gadreel/Lusus (ASaintOfSinners): Rumors abound about the activities of the ex-devil. Some say that he got so sick of everyone making wedding plans and having the whole thing spiral out of his control, that he just kidnapped Terrance and eloped with him. Others speculate that he is still making wedding plans, and has yet to set any definite date. There are yet more rumors that he is merely entertaining the idea of a wedding but does not have any particular plans to ever follow through with the actual deed. There has been plenty of evidence to point to all three theories and Mithril is ever one to dance about the truth.
In other news he has recently taken it upon himself to watch over a faerie lord that apparently had been imprisoned for quite some time, and he had set free with the assistance of Irina. The fact that he has the audacity to claim the care and responsibility of this faerie himself instead of turning him over to the courts has offended some faerie, amused others, and the rest simply could not be bothered to care. As far as Mithril is concerned, turnabout is fair play. The faerie once claimed him and now it is his turn to claim one of their number. More importantly, he is taking this job seriously and is doing his best to help the faerie known as Keledon out as best as he can.
Mozart (Amadaeus Felidae): Just as he was about to do something quite naughty, Sal had to go and get himself sick. Figuring now was not the time for mischief, he will wait for Sal to make a full recovery and then wreak some much needed havoc.
Pleione (Stellar Balinese): It seems that the annoying drow invader has discovered creative ways to prevent her from being destructive. During a party that was housed by her boy Rei, she took the time to watch all the children from a distance. She is not too terribly fond of children. However, one of them smelled like her brother Mozart, and it is rumored she made friends with him. Whatever the strange boy with the sparkly eyes said to her must have convinced her not to be too mean to the drow any longer. She has settled for staring at him from a distance, studying.
Rei (AmethystStarfall): Rei had an unhappy occurrence in the Silver Moon Inn when thanks to being surrounded by people utterly inflamed with anger over Sal's molestation, his empathy overwhelmed him and he got sick himself. When he recovered from this, he has made the vow to do all he can to get this problem under control and learn how to shield. He thought he could handle it himself, but passing out proved him wrong.
Salvador (Peculiar Silence): Could life be any worse!? Those past weeks of calm have finally caught up with him. In a drastic change of events, he ran into a child-molester at the Rambling Rose Tavern. A man in the guise of a panther who decided it was a good idea to rub against his leg. The panther could talk and would not kindly leave himself and his friends alone! Later, at the Silver Moon Inn, Sal discovered that the panther was a shapeshifter! Which was enough to set the boy's rage into overdrive! Caife (The Multifarious) managed to hold him down to prevent him from causing harm to anyone. However, he regretfully did cause harm. Apparently his raging sent Rei's empathy over the edge. And long after the beast was bounced from the Inn, Sal fell into a fevered coma. Luckilly quick thinking brought his father to his aid, who immediately called Dr. Valkonan (Maranya Valkonan) in for an emergency night call. Whatever the Doctor did or did not do seemed to have brought him out of it. And now he is feeling very well. Aside from depressed...
School has not gone well over the past week. Sal avoided his friends at most times and was often caught daydreaming during lessons. Just when he thought he was getting better, things seemed to have gotten worse. However, he did not refuse to take Rei up on his offer of attending a party at his mother's house on Friday evening. Though even at the party, he spent most of his time being aloof towards the rest of the party-goers. He has been more silent now than he has ever been known to be. From rage to depression ... what next? Maybe his regular visits to the Doctor will help out. And then again ... maybe not.
Suriel (Thirteenthchange): Suriel paid a visit to Jim Smith late this week and enjoyed a glass of custom made fruit soda. The purpose of his visit was to simply tell Jim that he actually likes him and enjoys his company.
Terrance Tomar-Duncan (Terrance Tomar): Professor T-D was absent from school late last week. He seemed VERY relaxed and cheerful at the Rambling Rose this weekend so whatever caused the absence is either resolved or wasn't anything dire. Usually he tries to help Mithril with his pet projects, but Mith's new charge does not like the half-elf very much. Terry's feelings are not particularly hurt by this.
The Cloaked One / Naveth Ut-Cthanid (The Multifarious): Apparently having recovered from whatever procedure he was subject to, this humanoid -- Naveth by name -- has been observed around town looking for cheap lodgings. It's not easy, with those facial tentacles getting in the way...
Valleana (Va11eana): Valleana has been noticeably absent and the Head Mistress pointedly refuses to say why. However, Anyon has been seen flying over more than just the temple lately.
Yeehaw Kikass (YeeHaw M Kikass): Yee is suffering. Thinking that Gaea is just a hallucination the poor wolf has been hallucinating back just trying to stay sane. Yes the Goddess-Spirit of Earth is trying to contact the galoot...but why? The ramifications of such contact are as unknown and have lead Yee into conflict with those who may have formerly thought of him as a friend. While doing 'good deeds' will Yee become a villain again and lose the world he's worked so hard to make?
Yoshi (KitsuneNineTails): The kitsune is still in hiding, but that is not stopping him from pulling other pranks as he can. A creepy faerie by the name of Keledon has caught his eye.
Zohak (ABafflingEnigma): Zohak thinks that Darkwing Duck is a very strange cartoon. He also thinks that Tweety Bird and the Roadrunner should both be destroyed at once with extreme prejudice, and that Gargamel needs all the help he can get in hunting down the smurfs for those blue creatures are too annoying to let live.

Monday, September 27: This upcoming Monday is Mutual Endeavors member and Ubique's Weekly subscriber reader The Multifarious' birthday! So a very happy birthday to you, Multi-mun! Those of you who know this individual, do not hesitate to send a shout out for joyous birthday occassions. In advance, may your birthday be pleasant and may you have many more joyous days to follow!
Final Thoughts Wow! I must admit at the beginning of this week's newsletter, I did not expect it to ever make it to a second page! I'm overwhelmed with excitement. My thanks go out to each and every one of you loyal subscribers and updaters. UW would be nothing without you. Even those of you who sent in your updates late after catching me online still working on it. Since I have much more room this week with a second page, I don't have to cut to the chase. However, I won't ramble on either.
Updates: Always remember that any future Ubique's Weekly submissions are always due the Monday before every expected delivery date. UW is issued every Tuesday morning to (maybe even earlier), depending on how long it takes me to put everything together and sent off to the printers. Comments, questions, updates, additions, announcements, advertisements, etceteras are always welcome for every issue. While some may make it to the front page, there is no guarantee that all submissions will be printed. However, your thoughts are always encouraged to be shared. Just remember to send all of these aforementioned things to

With that in mind, I think I'll wrap things up here. But before I say my farewells for the week, I'd like to take a moment to talk about communication. There seems to be a tremendous lack of that in RP-world. Players are talking less and less with each other. Storylines are being put on backburners because of it. There is so much potential in all that I see week to week. All it takes is a couple minutes of your time. Write an e-mail to your friends and comrades. Share your thoughts. Don't be afraid to talk to one another concerning your ideas. Communication is the key to success in all things. Even roleplaying. Help me to help you keep the dream alive. Until next week, I'll continue to be...
Keeping you informed, -- Nefarious SM Ubique's Weekly Editor Mutual Endeavors
