New Year, New Updates PDF Print E-mail

Tonight my brain exploded.  Mike and I had a nice long chat for most of the evening about the state of the site.  He asked me how it's been, and I finally took the opportunity to talk to him about a few issues that have perpetually slipped my mind.  I need to take a page from my own book more often and remember to e-mail people as soon as an idea strikes me, just so I don't forget them!  In any case, there are some new features you all may possibly notice. Number one:  We installed a new poll program.  This new module allows us to have more control over the nature of our front page polls.  In the future I'll be able to restrict voting to a number of options.  I can limit votes to one per registered user, registered users only, once per recorded IP address, or still as frequently as anyone really wants to.  I can limit it up to so many times per day, per hour.  And I can even set them to run for a limited period of time.  Shutting down automatically in case I forget or am not around to close them!

Still no poll features for the Fireboard forums yet, though.  On that you'll have to wait.  Have to remember that the Joomla! system is still pretty new in comparison to what many of you are used to.  It's growing and growing, slowly but surely.  New updates come in periodically, and Mike tends to tell me when he spots something we might be interested in.

Speaking of the forums, Mike also informed me that there is a new update.  However, it will take him some time to rewrite the code to better accommodate our preferences, such as centering text and so forth.  We still haven't found a way to allow users to delete their own posts yet either.  Sorry about that.  The best he said he could find was allowing users to delete their first posts, but then it would delete all of their subsequent replies, and that's not exactly what I'm looking for.

The potential future update, however, should clean up the problem of accidental double posting, Mike says.  So you can breathe easy on that, Zonker.  Eventually we'll get that problem fixed.  You'll just have to be patient, though.  Like I said, Mike has to go through and rewrite the code again.  Therefore it's not a change that will happen immediately.  I'm sure he'll let us know when he gets that done.

As noted on the forums, he did also recently fix the mini profile galleries.  Those should be functioning properly now, allowing for our users to upload more images to display their work.  Do please try to restrict your uploads to original art only.  Anything that goes against copyright law will of course have to be removed.  So do be sure to give credit where it's due.

Finally, you'll see a new option in the left main menu on the front page here: BETA TESTER CHAT.  I keep bringing up the issues we had with the flashchat to Mike, and I can't rightfully explain them.  Since I don't spend a lot of time in the Mutual Chat, I really haven't seen the same complications as before.  But if anyone does happen to notice people being mysteriously dropped, or showing up in the chat room but none of their text is going to screen, or whatever... Do be sure to inform me so I know for sure.

Given that, we discussed some alternative options.  We tested out a couple of other chat programs, and I found one that sort of interests me.  I'm not 100% certain on how well we can customize it, but it does seem that I can create our own room names.  Cut it down to one or two or more if I like.

We set up the BETA TESTER CHAT to allow you, our Mutual Endeavors members, the opportunity to take a test drive for us as well.  Play around with the beta chat and let us know what you think.  Do you like it better or worse than the Mutual Chat?  Should we toss out the old and incorporate the new?  Remember, your opinions matter.  So don't be shy.  Let me know what you think!
