Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #99 ~ 5 November 2007
The Blurb "Mistakes, obviously, show us what needs improving. Without mistakes, how would we know what we had to work on?" -- Peter McWilliams, Life 101
With National Novel Writing Month taking up most of my time, I regret to inform our readers that I really have not been paying as much attention to the detailed happenings of the RP world at large as I usually do. Truth be told, it's a small miracle that I even remembered to sit down and compile a newsletter this week. It's certainly being sent out much later in the day than the last one was.
Due to my busy schedule with writing, writing, and more writing, I also must take a moment to apologize for the minimal content to be found in this week's newsletter. Though I try to remember everything I can to report to players far and wide, I am only human. Not a computer program who puts all these words together, believe it or not.
Of course, I strongly suggest that readers visit the Mutual Endeavors website whenever at all possible. Nearly anything that I may fail to report here in this newsletter is almost always to be found on the site. Most of the discussions that inspire a great deal of the news herein can be found on our forum. If I've forgotten something, I whole-heartedly apologize. If there was something that you might have liked to see that I missed out on including, please do not hesitate to hit me with a message telling me how much of a stupid moron I am.
Really. I can take it.
This Just In "Science has proof without any certainty. Creationists have certainty without any proof." -- Ashley Montague
As the weeks go by, I've been noticing an increasing lack of IC type headlines. It seems to be the case that they are no longer necessary for this newsletter. Especially with such things available for the RP world as the RDI Playables and the newly created Rhydin Rumors page. See below for more details.
Headlines
Structural Genocide : Reports are coming in from all over the city! This past week has seen a horrific increase in arsonist terrorism. Other headlines read: Anarchy and Atheism In the Streets. Temples throughout the city, mostly those devoted to the god Le'krysh, have been reduced to little more than firey rubble. Investigators currently have no suspects. Worshippers are advised for the time being to stay safe in their own homes and to avoid religious gatherings at all costs, until such a time that the city can be made safe again.
Get the Scoop! : (Repeat of last week's headline.) Don't forget the RDI Playables! As seen on the front page of the Red Dragon Inn community page hosted by Dragon's Mark. This week, the Nefarious SM is just too darn lazy to copy and paste and paraphrase the plethora of news headlines that can be seen on that site. So we're just going to redirect you to them and let you read them for yourselves!
Got Rumors? : A new project has recently been started which is expected to hit Rhydin by storm. A recent post was made on the Mutual Endeavors forums concerning this creative new role-playing endeavor. The premise states that: "Occasionally there are circumstances -- events, character actions, places, or similar things -- that are things other character within the realm of Rhy'din might hear about. ... With that in mind, the Rhydin Rumors page was born." Much like the RDI playables, but not at all limited to the requirement that you need to sign up for the service. Check it out!
Growing Database : The new Rhydin Wiki keeps getting better and better every day! A large number of players in RP land have joined the cause and hit cyberspace by storm. Our network of spies have been keeping tabs on the growth of content and we're all very excited. This may very well be the best thing to hit role-play since the invention of the Internet. Or we could be laying it on thick with enthusiastic exaggeration. You decide.
Mutual WriMo Takes Off : In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the administrative staff at Mutual Endeavors has decided to host a 30 day writer's discussion board on our forums. This board can be found in the General category, directly under General Discussion, and is open to all members as well as guests (at least for reading) far and wide. Daily word prompts are being kept by whoever is the first to hit the board on any given day. Consider it a small little vacation spot for those times when our writers who are also role-players need a break from their future NY Times best-stelling novels in the making.
SM's Rhydin Wiki Proposal : This news comes from the front page of the Mutual Endeavors official website. The Nefarious SM has put out a call to arms to many of her friends and comrades in RP land. It is a universally understood truth that not everybody likes to be in the spotlight on the world wide web, and though some people think the wiki is a fine idea, they don't necessarily want to go through all the trouble of signing up somewhere else. Thus, SM is offering to post your content for you if really want her to. All you have to do is let her know!
In Other News... "Never tell a man you can read him through and through; most people prefer to be thought enigmas." -- Marchioness Townsend
Individual character updates are likely to take on some interesting changes in the near future. Now that UW is covering a wider range of news from a variety of places, it stands to reason that times will be a changing. Of particular note this week, you may see some character names with more than one known screen name listed in the parenthetical notation. In the past we have only covered characters played on the AOL service, but now that we've moved on to incorporating things we've witnessed elsewhere, there may also be characters with a second username listed. In order, it still stands that the first username is the one used ont he AOL service. The second, in most cases, is the known username for a character at Dragon's Mark or any other alternative gaming venue. Though in some instances the usernames are exactly the same.
Ecthelion (Lambent Tides): After months and months of not being seen on the surface world, the little blue sea elf was recently spotted Dockside making a new friend. Ecthelion had the pleasure of meeting one Mr. Harold Lowe, and chatted with him a while about some trouble he has been having figuring out how to get a fleet of ships across the world with minimal staff support. The sea elf expressed an extreme willingness to help, and was last seen diving off the pier with the intent of trying to talk a pod of whales into helping with this quest. He has not been seen since.
Harold Lowe (HGLowe): Rumor has it that Mr. Lowe is still puzzling over how to move a fleet of five ships across the seas with a limited number of able-bodied individuals on staff to help. Some suggestions that have been made to him, that have left him possitively boggled, are a shrink ray and a family of whales. Unfortunately, Harold has no idea what a shrink ray is, and he seems to also be having a tough time imagining whales being willing to help. Hopefully he'll come up with a more reasonable plan on his own, before all crazy hell breaks loose.
Haydee (Dark Harp String, Her Dark Strings): Haydee had been seen hovering about the outskirts of one tavern where she met a large, hulking brute by the name of Lobo. This has significantly rattled Haydee into rethinking visiting that one by herself too often.
Mostly, she has been seen with a looming shadow of a man at the Red Dragon Inn. Rumors are flying that there is a romantic connection between her and the shadow, and Haydee's frequent disappearances may confirm that. She also met a rather interesting fellow without the gift of sight. Haydee is intrigued by him and his gentlemanly manner, as well as his intelligent and excellent conversation.
Icarus Marcotte (SubtIe Iies): Word has it that the half-dragon's birthday is coming up very soon. If this year is destined to be like any other before it, that can only spell out a whole heck of a lot of trouble that he'd much prefer to be better off without. Keep your fingers crossed that this year any surprises do not include gargantuan undead dragons.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): We have it under good authority that the artist has been seen recently in the past week paying visits to the Rambling Rose Tavern. Also, it is rumored that she had a visitor drop by to keep her company on Halloween. Our sources have no clear news as to what she has been doing precisely, however.
Jacob Arche (Jacob Arche): With the Halloween month Jacob has been overrun with work. Most people don't realize that the height of animal cruelty is often during the seasons. The number of burned, broken, cut and mutilated black cats have escaped the Vet and he's about to see red again if he doesn't get a vacation soon. He's thankful for the friend he's made in Storm and often talks to her on the weekends to see how she and her beau are getting along to keep his sanity.
Joscelyne Hirsch (Aversion Toward): Jos was seen not too long ago at the Rambling Rose Tavern. It seems as if she and Allen actually got along without insulting each other for once. This happened the day before Halloween. Some time after midnight, it is rumored that she found her way to Irina Braeden's house and kept her company throughout the day.
Mesteno (Bronze Mesteno): The Ubique's Weekly super spy network has been keeping tabs on Rhydin's resident sadist. Our sources say that he has been having some romance troubles these past few weeks, but when is that any big surprise where Mesteno is concerned. Other reports state that autumn is messing with him something fierce. But that's the price one pays for being adopted by an avatar of entropy and decay.
Renley Killian (A Common Cur): Everything is going according to plan. Renley has been spending more and more time getting to know the young girl he met at the Red Dragon Inn this past month. A curious and surprisingly intelligent girl by the name of Haydee. They spent some time at the Medieval Tavern this past week getting to know each other a little better through an amazingly lengthy conversation. Before he knew it, the entire morning had gone by. He was later reported to have walked her back home to her room at the Red Dragon.
Salvador Delahada (Karmic Venganza): His constant vigil over the city is starting to leave the karma child feeling very uncomfortable. It seems as if his previous playmate, whom he let loose in the city not that long ago, has a death wish. Though it may be more precise to say that she's very interested in enacting some revenge. He's keeping a very close eye on her and is growing more and more displeased with her vengeful enthusiasm.
Stormraven k'Leshya (StormravenSpirit): News! Stormy has been visiting her mysterious extended family as of late. This resulted in her also visiting the Rambling Rose Tavern last week in a rather elaborate ball gown. Our sources state she is still dating the notoriously famous and rich otherworld playboy Morgan Knight. Additionally, it is rumored that she is learning how to drive. Clear the road!
Suliss'urn Xukuth (Natha Oreb): Suliss'urn was last seen within the Red Dragon Inn receiving a sealed wax note from a hawk-nosed light elf wearing the colors of Rhilshen. Whatever was in the letter had the drow hitting the floor on all fours and running. Those closest to her and able to feel the traces of her presence have felt the drow's aura fade completely. One thing is for certain: she's gone from Rhy'din but she isn't dead.
Classifieds
Dragon's Mark : The new home for for Free Form Role-Playing (FFRP) on the web, or so their mission statement about themselves proclaims. Here you can find all things Red Dragon Inn and many things Rhy'din related. The people at DM strive to present themselves as the number one resource site for the greater whole of the FFRP community, but they aren't the only ones. Still, this is a valuable website to know about. Make use of it as you see fit. * * * Greater Realms : A new forum for Rhy'Din players, based more outside of the city setting. Called GreaterRealms, it's open to anyone who plays in Rhy'Din, regardless of whether they play on AOL or on the RDI site, or even RoH, with an emphasis on stories that take place across the whole realm. Meant as a companion board for both Mutual Endeavors and RDI, it lacks a lot of the neat features you'd find elsewhere, but hopefully will soon make up for that with content. * * * Mutual Endeavors LJ Community : Before the message board forum was ever considered, another attempt at keeping Mutual Endeavors alive and active was put into motion with the creation of the LiveJournal Community. If you have a LiveJournal of your own, you are thoroughly encouraged to join our community at any time. Stay up-to-date and in the loop with our random ramblings and discussions. Some are held there and others are held on our forum. Everyone is welcome. Don't be shy! * * * Rambling Rose Tavern : The Rambling Rose Tavern is a bar and grill establishment in town, owned and operated by Seamus Wylie and Katie Rose Wylie. Stop in and enjoy a drink or a home-style meal, but before you do check out the rules and room description by following this link: http://www.ramblingrosetavern.net. There are plenty of fun times to be had at the Rambling Rose Tavern! Don't hesitate to join in on them whenever possible. * * * Rhydin Wiki : As linked to in our ME resources category, the Rhydin Wiki is an internet wiki dedicated to all things Rhydin (however it's spelled) far and wide. Hosted by the founder of Rhilshen, anyone is welcome to contribute to the repository. Perhaps in time the wiki will turn itself into a veritable Encyclopedia Rhydinica! * * * Storyboard Archive : The freeform role-playing group more commonly known as Mutual Endeavors had once added its storylines and characters to a message board forum for player convenience. It was decided that it would be beneficial to allow players a less time-restricted venue in which to present their characters' stories and participate interactively. Since that time, things have changed and this old forum is now a read-only resource, but still worth checking if you're up for some good reading. * * * Subscribe Now! : Ubique's Weekly is a publication provided by the not-for-profit organization known as Mutual Endeavors. As a free source of literary entertainment, you as the reader have the liberty to send out copies of our publication to whomever you think might enjoy the information shared. To save yourselves the hassle of constantly forwarding what you might find amusing, feel free at any time to inform your friends and coconspirators to contact the Editor to request their very own future copies of Ubique's Weekly at no cost to them whatsoever. It's as simple as clicking this link here above, or by visiting our official website. * * * Ubique's Archive : For several years now, the Ink Wire Associates and I have been trying to archive every old issue of Ubique's Weekly onto the internet. It has been a slow-going process, and finally every past issue has been coded and archived to the new site. Including this one! Do enjoy.
Final Thoughts "We thought, because we had power, we had wisdom." -- Stephen Vincent Benet, Litany for Dictatorships, 1935, US poet & short story author (1898 - 1943)
Ladies and gentleman, please be advised. After today there is only one more issue of Ubique's Weekly left to be scheduled for release and circulation from the usual source. Our plan, with the creation of the new Mutual Endeavors website, is to stop sending this publication out via email from my commonly known AOL username as you always see it. For several weeks now I have given you all plenty of warning. This will be the second to last that you will receive.
By next week, I fully expect to see a much more active response to this calling out. Next week is the last scheduled newsletter to be sent from the AOL service. The future of Ubique's Weekly is changing as much as ME has already. Our plan is to start sending the newsletter out direct from the website. So here is what you need to do.
Visit our website. Either click on the link above, or C&P http://www.mutualendeavors.org into your preferred web browser. (Firefox works best.) Type it in if you prefer. No matter how you prefer to do it, just make certain that you do. On the bottom right hand corner of the front page you will see a gray button that reads "subscribe" just under the Newsletter heading. If you are not a member of Mutual Endeavors already, you will need to input a name and email address before clicking the button. If you are already a member of Mutual Endeavors, you only need to click the button and your registered email address will be added to the list.
Our newsletter is still completely free. I compile all this information out of the goodness of my own heart every week, with the help of submissions sent by readers like you. Though I would very much prefer it if you were to take the few short minutes necessary out of your day to go through the submission process on your own, it is not by any means a requirement. You may also respond to this or the next newsletter to tell me that yes you are still interested in receiving Ubique's Weekly, and would I please add your email address to the list. I can manually add email addresses to the mailing list!
If you do not respond one way or the other, I must inform you that you will be removed from the current mailing list. If you do not renew your subscription, you will no longer receive future issues of Ubique's Weekly after the 100th scheduled release. I hope to see a flurry of activity regarding this notice within the next week. It really does please me to know that people actually do appreciate this publication. Until next time, I will continue to be...
