Ubique's Weekly

A Mutual Endeavors Publication

Issue #92 ~ 8 September 2007

The Blurb

Dear Readers: Pleae pay very close attention to what you are about to read.  I know full well that many of you skim over every issue of our newsletter in search of something captivating and thrilling to read, but as I've said dozens of times before, sometimes there is important news to read.  Such as, I hope, the news I have to share with you today.

Ubique's Weekly is going to change.  The future of our newsletter is in your hands, just as the past of it was as well.  In order for us, the Ink Wire Associates, the people who gather your news and compile it every week into our newsletter, to best share and circulate information in the future, we need your help.  We need your cooperation.  We need you to become a part of the new and improved Mutual Endeavors experience.

Please, visit our website.  Register and help us by showing your support of the cause in doing so.  But before you do, it's very important that you allow us to stay in contact with you by keeping your communication channels open.  What I mean is: you need to allow certain web based e-mail addresses to make their way into your inbox and not your spam folder into instant deletion land instead.

If you wish to continue receiving future issues of Ubique's Weekly, it's very important that you take a little time to work through the following steps.  1. Visit www.mutualendeavors.org and take a look at the progress we have made.  2. Set your spam filters to allow yourself to receive e-mails from
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  These are the two addresses you are most likely to receive e-mail from in the future.  3. Register and involve yourself.  That's all I can ask of you, and all I can do is ask.  If you decide ME is not the place for you, then that's your own prerogative.  All I can do is ask, hope, and dream.

The reason I ask you to join our cause on our new site is very simple.  The future of Ubique's Weekly is set to be tightly knitted to the website.  By the 100th issue, currently scheduled for release in the first week of November, all future issues of our newsletter will be compiled and sent directly from the site.  There is a "subscribe to our newsletter" button on the front page of our site for you to click.  Takes only a few seconds do complete this task, and I am not of a mind to do the work for you.  I will not, I repeat not, be transferring the current on AOL mailing list over from my own address book and into the administrative database.  This is a job for you, the reader, to do on your own.  Doing so will prove to me that you are still interested in reading Ubique's Weekly and that you do believe in the Mutual Endeavors cause.

Now that I've got that little bit of pleading out of the way, let's move on with this week's player to player, what have our characters been doing this past week, news!

Storyline Spotlight

The Story of the Dockside Killer Revealed! -- It started in early July; the rats were the first.  Left dead without any mark on them, except for vacant sockets where eyes used to be.  At first, there was no reason nor rhyme to anyone -- no killer was spotted, no one was noticed near the bodies.  And who cared?  They were only rats.

But there came a chance encounter, and Malcolm Atsedes became the first to see both what had happened to the rats, and a preview of what was to come.

At the end of a dark alley, something small and blue with reflective eyes was growling and howling, surrounded by the bodies of dead, eyeless rats.

It was only the beginning.

Next came seagulls and dogs and raccoons.  Malcolm now followed the murderer of these animals, trying to figure out what was going on.  As time went on, the description was refined.  Blue skin, yellow hair, transparent teeth, small.  There was no rhyme nor reason still to these killings, but as time passed, they became bolder and bigger, without any sign that they might stop.

On the twentieth of July the first human victim was killed, Jayne Barnsby.  On the twenty-third another, Bruce McLennan.  There were only two things that those two victims had in common; they were arguing with friends and they were human.  As time and victims piled up, the pattern started suggesting hate crimes against humankind.

Rongar al Hamid on the twenty-fourth.  Saeinella Inoyet and Brandon Patrick Hayes on the twenty-fifth.  Jack Sidwell was the last human victim on the twenty-seventh.  Malcolm saw most of the murders, and followed the killer to where he apparently lived; in the dark and abandoned tavern named the Maritime.  Malcolm started planning its capture; the whole time, he had been reporting what he saw, anonymously, to Ada Hutchinson, a freelance reporter who was putting the stories in the Dockside News Report.

The last thing to die under the killer's hand was an English mastiff on the twenty-eighth.

Down south about two hours, a man was reading the Dockside News and recognized the killer for the first time.  That man was a lot of things once, though he was presumed dead by most of the realm now.  His name was Harold Lowe.  Among other things, he had been the owner of the Maritime, and its one permanent guardian.

And for the first time, the killer had a name: Horaetio Renne Arc'err.

Harold went back to the city, searching for the eye witness, wanting to confirm what was seen.  Frantic to put an end to the killing without seeing his former cook hunted down and killed, he was all over the city that day.  He wrote to Governor Helston.  He made a few unlikely friends.  He spoke at length with Ewan Corinsson, who guided Harold to take Renne to the Port South Holding House, where he would be safe until he could be given a fair trial.

With the knowledge that Renne would be protected under the word of a good and honest man, Harold headed for the Maritime.

Renne emphatically denied the accusation of murder, despite eye witnesses, despite Malcolm being present, despite the eyeless bodies of six humans and a slew of animals.  Harold, for his part, persisted in getting Renne to turn himself in and after many an impassioned plea on Renne's part to be left free, eventually the former Tree Biting Imp agreed to go and turn himself in.

Harold didn't want anything more to do with the city, the Maritime, or any of it.  Life had handed him one too many blows, and on top of that, certain parties now accused him of being the root of Renne's madness -- mercifully, certain other parties and his own good sense reminded him that he didn't make Renne turn to murder.  After a couple of days, nerves shot, he went back south and hoped that it was the end of it.  He had gotten Renne somewhere safe, had stopped any more murders.  His duty was done; the warrior wanted to stand down and live a happy life away from the city.

It was not to be that easy; not for Harold, not for anyone.

Things were still happening in the city.  Johnathan Tapole, a woman who seemingly appeared out of no where, was a visitor to Renne and apparently had some romantic connection to him.  She then proceeded to cripple and beat the star witness, Malcolm Atsedes, and had a warrant sworn out for her arrest.  Meanwhile, Renne was visited by Chryrie Nightstar, a doctor, and Cinder Shirastan, a fisherman.  He also received an early visit from Merit and Rena.

The courts ground ahead.  Desperately searching to scrape enough legal talent up for a trial in a realm where vigilante justice reigned supreme and where very few records were left of prior legal systems, summons were issued for Dewey, Cheetum and Howe, the infamous legal firm in Rhy'Din, to act as Renne's defense counsel.  Given that DCH, as they were known, had run afoul of Governor Helston and a lot of other people and had very questionable ties to Judge Mbutu, assigning them to a prosecutorial position would give them power that no one in Rhy'Din's admittedly slapshod government wanted.

That left the courts to search for a prosecutor who would not abuse the authority of the office.  And Harold Lowe was called into service again, when a copy of his eight year old bar certificate and file was found in a cabinet.

Now the man who had once employed Renne, as well as had persuaded him to turn himself in, was to be on the opposite side of the courtroom acting as the voice of the victims in this case.

Dr. Elena Dumova, one of the very few qualified psychologists in the realm, was also summoned to do an assessment on Renne's capability to stand trial, which she is still in the midst of performing.  After two sessions with Renne, as well as speaking to some of his former friends, she is still searching for other people who knew Renne and could give her more insight into him.  Currently, Merit, Rena and Zonker are encouraged to contact her so that they might add to the assessment, and she's also interested in talking to Ranyor Asimovic, former manager of the Maritime.

Harold, unwilling but competent, has interviewed two of the seven witnesses to the case as well as dug up more information; he has also reviewed some of the tapes from the Port South Holding House and is still in the fact finding process.  There has been no official word as of this writing from DCH.  Malcolm Atsedes has been placed under witness protection, in the care of Tom Thompson of the Rhy'Din Watch.

No court date has been requested by the prosecutor as of yet, but the case moves forward slowly.

This Just In

Relative information on the above story can be found on the Mutual Endeavors website and forums.  Yet another reason why you should check it out, register and interact with your fellow players!  Maybe these few headlines items will help further encourage you.

Headlines

Circulation Schedule The future of Ubique's Weekly remains unwritten.  The only thing we know for certain is that we still wish to continue to publish and circulate our newsletter.  Perhaps not as it is currently and has been done, but we still want to share the news with you.  News written by players and provided for players to stay informed of what's hot and what's not in role-play land.  Currently we are indecisive in regard to precisely when the newsletter should be circulated.  There is a poll that has been in effect since the beginning of the month on our main website.  Clocked in last with 30 votes total, it seems the majority believes Monday may be the best day for future circulation.  But that's only at a 36.7% margin.  We'd like more votes and more opinions on this matter.  Please, speak up and tell us what you think.

Law & Rhy'Din
: As documented above, the trial of Renne Arc'err still creeps forward.  Players involved with the storyline are currently seeking other interested parties who might want to get themselves involved with something big, new, and exciting.  Check our ME forums for further details, and don't be shy.  The advertisement still stands that ALL are welcome to apply.  More information on this storyline can also be found on our forums, such as documented newspaper coverage and links to such things.

In Other News...

Character news once again comes to you through personal observations made during my own and other IWA member role-play sessions.  Not to mention a few comments tossed up at me from other players who didn't precisely send me updates.  Please, people.  Send me updates!  I like to read what your characters have been doing, and I'm certain other people do too!

Allen Baird (A Flaming Flamer):  So evidently, Allen was kidnapped after all.  By his own father!  Of all people.  Rumor has it that something rather foul went on, something that nobody is really talking about in any explicit detail, but bad none the less.  Word is that Allen is back home now and resting under the supportive and loving care of his husband Mike Harada.

Anthony (GuardianOfNyght):  The mysterious Anton, as he may otherwise refer to himself as, was spotted recently at the Rambling Rose Tavern.  Though for the most part he was quiet and kept to himself, he did engage in curious conversation with one Nemo Terrant.  Particularly in regards to the fact that Anton turned Nemo down.  Can you believe it!?

Dris (BardGaIIant)Everybody's favorite local musician and craftsman made an appearance this past week at the Rambling Rose Tavern.  Amazingly enough, nobody really asked where he'd been.  This shouldn't surprise the bard too much, considering he hasn't been seen frequently in public for a very long time.  However, rumor has it he may have finally ran into his nephew and had that talk they had been meaning to have.

Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik):  Ehz played bartender on Friday night!  It was awesome!  All she did was sit there and talk to Irina about baby-proofing her home, so it really wasn't tremendously exciting.  But miracle of all miracles, she didn't blow antyhing up.  The Rambling Rose Tavern is still safe and still in one piece.

Gale Soames (I like AIexander):  So the word's finally out and official.  Eye-witness reports last saw the fencer ex-SeeD in two local bars this past week.  An incident broke out at the Blank Sign Tavern in which he hd a jar of olives flung at his head while kissing Quinn Norcross hello.  Another broke out at the Rambling Rose Tavern later in the week when fellow PR team member Thomas Markahm caught up with his quarry.  The ruling is: Tom got his ass handed to him and Gale does NOT want to go 'home.'  Why can't they just leave him alone and let him lead the life he wants to lead?

Harold Lowe (HGLowe):  The talk of the town!  Okay, not so very much.  Amazingly enough, though, Harold was spotted recently at the Rambling Rose Tavern himself.  Conversation probably could have gone much more decently than it did, but at least he wasn't chased out of the tavern by flying daggers just for being a stranger to the place.

Havoc (Chaos Reclaimed):  Havoc was spotted recently at the Blank Sign Tavern, the pub that Jolen was given the deed to and still has not properly named.  There he ran into Dris as well.  They talked.  They dealt with an annoying pest of a fairy that broke the bard's piano.  And the spawn also left Jolen a new pet.  A flying lizard made out of a corkscrew.  How nice.

Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden):  Olives!  Any time anybody ever sees her she's eating olives!  That baby in her belly really has some strange tastes.  At least it's not telling her to put those olives on anything weird, like peanut butter.

Jolen (Truth Denyed):  Poor redhead.  So he finally learned that a certain someone isn't interested in him on a romantic level.  Will his poor, broken little heart ever repair from that amount of bleeding?  We'll only know if we ever see him out in public again.

Martin Gilcrest (I Like Tonberry):  Nobody has seen Martin in public, but investigator reports are trying to link him to the bombing and destruction of a local three story office building.  No solid evidence can be found, but who else are you going to put up as a star suspect other than a known arson?

Penrith Towley (Aversion Toward):  Seeker Veritas Penrith Towley has finally made a recent public appearance since his return to Rhy'din from his home world of Methuen.  He reports that the Seeker General is planning to move a branch office into the realm to help work with the local law, and perhaps help clean things up around these part.  Trying to bring order to a chaotic world isn't easy, but they're destined to try!

Quinn Norcross (Quinn Norcross):  Labor Day was not the best of days, but he did finally manage to catch up with his uncle for that long talk he had been sent to have in the first place.  Quinn has not made plans to return home since then, and likely won't be making any any time soon.  Rumor has it he's found a couple of reasons to stick around make Rhy'din his new home.  One of which being the fact that he's started dating one of the local residents.

Rose Wylie (Katie Rose Wylie):  Rumor   Is it a boy?  Is it a girl?  Does anybody know, because I sure don't!  The running rumor is that Rose finally popped her baby.  This makes number six in a series of pregnancies, of which this being the fifth to survive.  So when do we get to hear the big news?

Salvador Delahada (Karmic Venganza):  Speaking of babies, Salvador sure has been asking a lot of questions about them recently.  And no!  No, no, no!  This is not because he's considering being a father any time soon.  Are you crazy?  Word got out, though, that one of his mates is looking to find herself a suitable candidate for fatherhood.  Mara wants a baby, and while Salvador isn't at all inclined to give her one, he's at least willing to help her find someone compatible.

Thomas Markahm (I Like Shiva):  So Tom finally caught up with Gale, right?  Eye witness reports claim that he had his ass handed to him by the fencer, and the fencer's current 'boyfriend' Quinn Norcross.  Last known, Irina Braeden helped him to a medical facility to tend to his wounds.  So what does this mean for the future of the SeeD PR team?  Only time will tell.

Storyboard ArchiveThe freeform role-playing group more commonly known as Mutual Endeavors had once added its storylines and characters to a message board forum for player convenience.  It was decided that it would be beneficial to allow players a less time-restricted venue in which to present their characters' stories and participate interactively.  Since that time, things have changed and this old forum is now a read-only resource, but still worth checking if you're up for some good reading.

Ubique's Archive :  For several years now, the Ink Wire Associates and I have been trying to archive every old issue of Ubique's Weekly onto the internet.  It has been a slow-going process, and finally every past issue has been coded and archived to the new site.  Do enjoy.

Final Thoughts

All right.  It's 4:00 PM and I've run out of things to ramble about.  So I'm pretty much just going to rewrite some of the things I included in last week's Final Thoughts and be done with it.

Subscription requests can now be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or can be made on the official Mutual Endeavors website.  There is a "join our newsletter" button in the lower right hand corner of the front page of our site.  I should probably think about changing the above classifieds advertisement that states otherwise.

Updates: can still be sent to me directly, though I would prefer they be sent from now on to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , since we are planning on making some changes in the future of this newsletter. Following projects concerning the site include determining the future of Ubique's Weekly.  Our plan is to eventually set up a perfect anonymous form for players to fill out to send their information to.  Until such a time that we have this completely figured out, please continue to send your updates in the usual fashion.  My plan is to have all this organized by the time I have finished writing the 100th issue of the newsletter.  Please be patient.

The day in which issues of Ubique's Weekly is scheduled to be circulated is also currently up for debate on our website.  Check out the poll listed on the front page and share your opinion with us on this matter.  The administrative staff is far too indecisive for its own good.

All that said, I will as always and ever continue to be...

Keeping you informed,
--
