Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #89 ~ 4 August 2007
The Blurb Greetings and salutations all you happy readers you. So it turns out that my big plan for last week didn't work quite as well as I hoped it would. Using Arial in place of Times New Roman, the classic font and style of every past issue of UW, made no difference whatsoever in the C&Ping of the newsletter from email to the archives on our new site. I'm starting to believe that Mutual Endeavors simply does not like AOL all that much. Ah well. I'll figure something out.
Unfortunately, nobody sent me any updates this past week. In addition, I personally did not have a whole lot of time to be active in role-play either. What this means is that this week's newsletter is likely to be very short and very lacking in information to share. This may or may not have to do with some small amount of confusion concerning how to treat the newsletter in the future. I will do my best to cover that at the very least.
Top Story! Old boards versus new boards! Last week we covered the story of the completion of the UW Archive. So as everyone should well know, every single past issue of Ubique's Weekly is available for public viewing on the new site for Mutual Endeavors.
This month, the administrative staff at Mutual Endeavors has been busy working on the new forum. In the past, we had under our control a free message board forum provided through a service known as ProBoards. With the induction of our brand new fully integrated website, the Ink Wire Associates have decided to do away with the old board and make way for the new. During this first week of transfers and changes we have stumbled upon a couple of difficulties.
First and foremost: on the old forum players were capable of creating multiple usernames using the same registration email without complication. This allowed for a member base of 144 at last check. It was a well known fact that a good portion of those 144 members were all created by the same small handful of some dozen people. Many players are guilty of having multiple characters, and on the proboard we enjoyed the liberty to make individual usernames for each and every one of them.
I regret to inform you that this is not the case on the new Mutual Endeavors website. Unfortunately, players are limited to one username per registered email address. Once an email address is confirmed at registration, it cannot be used a second time for a second (third or fourth or fifth etc.) username. However, all is not lost.
Many of our members are also guilty of creating individual screen names for each of their dozens of individual characters on the America Online service. In the past, people have temporarily deleted, created, restored and redeleted screen names in order to play the characters of their choice and keep people guessing as to who plays who, when, and where. We role-players still enjoy our anonymity from time to time.
Here are a couple of options to use when registering character usernames to the new Mutual Endeavors website:
1. Create a new individual character screen name temporarily on the AOL service. Or restore an old one. Register your new username on the ME site and follow the steps to confirm your registration as they arrive in your email. This can be a complicated task that some of you may not be willing to work with. So I give you another option...
2. Contact an administrator, either myself or Mel or K (NOT MIKE). The Ink Wire Associates have complete access to the backend of the site and are capable of manually inputting usernames and passwords. Any IWA Staff member can be contacted through the use of email or private messaging on the site. Please do not harass us in instant messages and ask us to do something for you. Running the site is not our full time occupation. We do not get paid for this. Though we are perfectly willing to help in our spare time. It's simply best that you send an email or a private message and be patient.
When contacting an administrator to ask her to manually input a username for you, please include a temporary new email address. This does not require you to have restored an old AOL screen name, but it might help if you have one in your cache to use for the username preferred in the future. By manually inputting a username, I (the Nefarious SM) will receive a mailer-daemon email telling me that a message could not be sent. Everything on the site works through my administrative email address

.
Administrators can set up a manual override to automatically confirm registration and allow you to sign into the site under your alternate character name. Though it is in your best interest to immediately change your password when given the opportunity. The acting IWA Staff member will contact you as soon as the job is complete to inform you of your new successfully forced username and temporary password. I have had to do this a couple of times, and only as a last resort in most instances.
3. A third and final option is to make use of one of the internet's little known secrets. Administrative FAQ director Mel directed me to three websites that offer temporary email service for registration purposes. I have a feeling this is the sort of thing that spammers may use when they're desperately bored, but what the hell. Check out one of the three following if you'd rather be independent and are kind enough to spare us administrators more work: http://www.mailinator.com/, http://www.temporaryinbox.com/, or http://www.mailexpire.com/. I have not personally used these yet, but I figured you might find it useful.
I know that this is a long article and I thank you for reading it in full. Most of you know that I detest repeating myself, so if I have to write something like this up again I'm going to be very irate. An irate SM does not for a pleasant website experience make. So please don't push my buttons.
This Just In Believe it or not, I have a headline to share with you all this week! This news comes direct from the Mutual Endeavors website forums.
Take It to The Bank : Resident party girl Joscelyne S. Hirsch, more commonly known as simply Jos, dropped in on the patrons of the Rambling Rose Tavern earlier this week to join in on a little conversation and good spirited times. Late Tuesday evening leading into early Wednesday morning, she and other local residents got to talking about going out clubbing some time. This lead to Jos suggesting they do so, and that lead to confirming a date for party time.
A total of ten people, including Jos herself, will be getting together on August 9, 2007, next Thursday evening, to go out to a club she knows personally. More on this story can be found on the ME forums at the new site under the Game Announcements forum in the Storytelling category.
In Other News... Since I received no updates and was not online frequently enough this past week to participate in much role-play at all, you can clearly see that I skipped over a section or two. No updates equals no news for SM to read equals nothing for SM to report in running issues of UW. However, I did get a little play in and did communicate with a few of my fellow players, so I may have a couple of individual character updates to share from my own perspective.
Alquinius Rocfletching (Woodland Shield): An incident at the Rambling Rose Tavern caught this usually antisocial elven ranger's attention, when one notorious drow by the name of Velkyn decided to stir up some trouble and pick a fight with some of the locals. Alquin has been tracking this villain for quite some time. When events took a strange turn, the drow assassin fled the premises, with the ranger in hot pursuit. What happened next remains a mystery. No witnesses have stepped forward.
Dris (BardGaIIant): Much to the bard's surprise, an old friend dropped by to hang out and share some good times with. Rumor has it that Dris went on a shopping drip with one dastardly infamous Sinjin Fai earlier this week as well.
Havoc (Chaos Reclaimed): The world well learned that it's not wise to make the spawn bleed. An incident occurred at the Rambling Rose Tavern earlier this week after a bit of an argument between Havoc, Sin, and Salvador. After an injury taken to his wing, the spawn made an abrupt departure in an attempt to control his spilling chaotic energies. This gave rise to dozens of asphalt born insectoid creatures. The swarm nearly overtook the tavern, but was quickly dispensed with by the combined efforts of the sinner and the hunter.
Icarus Marcotte (SubtIe Iies): He was last seen wandering in the wake of Dris and Sin, toting an armload of bags and boxes, during their recent shopping trip.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): What a crazy week for the artist! First she was exposed to the asphalt bug swarm, and then she gets invited to a group outing to party at a club? Who knew?
Joscelyne Hirsch (Aversion Toward): Good times to share all around! The dreamspeaker ventured into the RRT to hang out and see what was going on, all based on a whim that told her she should probably be there. Not disappointing, considering she invited some people to go clubbing with her next Thursday. This ought to be fun.
Mesteno (Bronze Mesteno): So very little has been seen of the sadist as of late, but there is a rumor he's got himself in a bit of trouble with his recent client. What is it exactly that the sadist does? And isn't he always getting himself in trouble?
Salvador Delahada (Karmic Venganza): Arguments with Sin and Havoc. Picking fights with the latter. Making a mess of the sinner's bed. Not as perverted as most of you may imagine. Top it all off with helping his brother scry the past of an object, and that ending in some much unexpected brotherly affection. Salvador would very much like to take a vacation. Forever.
Sinjin Fai (Sinjin Fai): Fighting off swarms of asphalt insects. Busy working to maintain the law at his club. Being invited to go clubbing with a complete and total stranger. Hey, the girl's not all that bad. She gives away free samples that are fun to experiment with on unsuspecting bards. Then there was shopping. Life is probably going very well for the sinner these days.
Stormraven k'Leshya (StormravenSpirit): Our dear Stormy has never been clubbing before! What is she to wear? How is she to act? How is it she even got invited in the first place? These may be some of the various questions running through her head, but them's the facts. Stormraven was also invited along on the clubbing trip scheduled for next week.
Valentine Shyre (XValentineShyreX): Much to her surprise, our darling Val was also invited to go along on the club outing next week. Last anyone knew she was busy shopping for something positively slutty to wear.
Classifieds Mutual Endeavors Forum : The freeform role-playing group more commonly known as Mutual Endeavors has added its storylines and characters to a message board forum for player convenience. It was decided that it would be beneficial to allow players a less time-restricted venue in which to present their characters' stories and participate interactively. Not everyone can be online at the same times all the time. Therefore we opened up this forum to the masses. If you're interested, registration is completely free and unmoderated. Check it out! * * * Mutual Endeavors LJ Community : Before the message board forum was ever considered, another attempt at keeping Mutual Endeavors alive and active was put into motion with the creation of the LiveJournal Community. If you have a LiveJournal of your own, you are thoroughly encouraged to join our community at any time. Stay up-to-date and in the loop with our random ramblings and discussions. Some are held there and others are held on our forum. Everyone is welcome. Don't be shy! * * * Navarra Farms : is temporarily opening opportunities for stud services with four of their finest stallions. To save yourselves the hassle of constantly forwarding what you might find amusing, feel free at any time to inform your friends and coconspirators to contact the Editor to request their very own future copies of Ubique's Weekly at no cost to them whatsoever. It's as simple as clicking this link here above. * * * Ubique's Archive : For several years now, the Ink Wire Associates and I have been trying to archive every old issue of Ubique's Weekly onto the internet. It has been a slow-going process, and finally every past issue has been coded and archived to the new site. Do enjoy.
Final Thoughts All righty then. So I covered the changes concerning the new forums versus the old proboard. This change has forced me to also alter the above hyperlink in the classifieds section of this newsletter, and should remain that way for the issues to follow in the future. Additionally, I have altered the hyperlink for the UW Archive, as per the site that project is now complete.
Subscription requests can now be sent to

, or can be made on the official Mutual Endeavors website. There is a "join our newsletter" button in the lower right hand corner of the front page of our site.
Updates: can still be sent to me directly. Following projects concerning the site, after the transfer of the forums, include determining the future of Ubique's Weekly. Our plan is to eventually set up a perfect anonymous form for players to fill out to send their information to. Until such a time that we have this completely figured out, please continue to send me your updates. My plan is to have all this organized by the time I have finished writing the 100th issue of the newsletter. Please be patient.
Remember that Ubique's Weekly is written and sent out every Saturday of every week. Your updates are expected to be in my inbox before you receive the latest issue in yours. A decent deadline to give yourselves is every Friday evening by midnight. Help me to help you to keep the dream of freeform coopertaive role-play alive. And as ever I will continue to be...
