Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #79 ~ 11 May 2005
The Blurb "I've always found paranoia to be a perfectly defensible position." -- Pat Conroy
Greetings and salutations, loyal readers. It seems I owe you all an apology once again as I have put off writing this week's edition of Ubique's Weekly. I have no better excuse than laziness and real life distractions. The Ink Wire Associates have all been very helpful this week in sending me their compilations of updates, and for that I owe them all my thanks. I only hope that their hard work isn't considered to be overlooked and forgotten. On my part it hasn't been. Though I have neglected my own responsibility to spreading the news by being a total slacker! It happens, and I've grown accustomed to none of you being too terribly disappointed. Thank you to those of you who asked whether or not I was going to write this week's issue.
As you can plainly see, I have decided to go with Times New Roman once again this week. Those of you who did send me your thoughts seem to have the same opinion as myself. That 10 point Courier New is just atrocious! During the experiments thusfar I am wont to agree that this TNR is a bit difficult to read afterall. I only wish that 12 point did not look so horrifically large in comparison to the way the rest of the newsletter is set up. I'm starting to lean towards the Book Antiqua, but we shall see. I haven't received any official complaints or opinions on the matter, so chances are I might just leave it as it is until I do. But once again I don't want to bore you all with my tendency to ramble on. So let's move on with the news, shall we?
Top Story! "First things first, but not necessarily in that order." -- Doctor Who
Unscheduled Leave of Absence Greetings readers. As you may have noticed, I have not updated anything in about a month. This is due to a lot of real life concerns that have pretty much sucked away all my free time, which means I have not been gaming at all. I do not know when this situation will change, but I do hope that it is sometime in the foreseeable future. On a happier note, I have received some feedback about the desired fonts to be used in this publication. So far it is a tossup between 10 point Book Antiqua and 12 point Times New Roman. All we need to do now is select a tiebreaker. Let your desires be known! The faithful Editor in Chief eagerly awaits all such responses. On a personal note, I want to thank Ehzoterik for filling in my spot here in U.W. I hope to return soon! Wishing all of you oodles of fun gaming,
--Gen-Gen. Storyline Spotlight Editor Ubique's Weekly Mutual Endeavors
Storyline Spotlight "Time sneaks up on you like a windshield on a bug." -- Jon Lithgow
This week we did not receive any noteworthy news articles for the progression of any continuing storyline. So I'm going to include a piece from the Multiverse Minutes for anyone who might be interested.
Woody's Cotillion and the Spring Festival
Woody Sprite and Dey and Fayalki have decided to combine their two spring flings into one large blowout. Tentative date is 13 May. Invitations should be going out soon. If you don't get one, show up anyway!
For more information on this event, please contact Woody Sprite, Dechirant, or Fayalki. The Editor in Chief and the Ink Wire Associates have no knowledge of the event and so direct all inquiries to the masterminds behind it instead. Thank you.
--The Nefarious SM, standing in for, --DarkAngelGenesis Storyline Spotlight Editor Ubique's Weekly Mutual Endeavors
This Just In "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." -- Sir Winston Churchill
It really has been a good long while since I've received any decent amount of Headlines for the publication. Based on the fact that my brain is currently drugged up on painkillers, my creativity is lacking. Therefore it is unlikely I will remember everything that has transpired over the course of the past week in which to make stuff up on my own. Just to give Jess something to do, I recently asked her to send out the weekly reminders for me since I have a tendency to forget myself. Seems it did the trick though in at least getting people to remember to send me something. Here's what we've got to share with you this week.
Headlines
Attempted Arson: Late Sunday evening, the local Rhy'Din fire department was called to the scene of the start of a fire that nearly sank The Lady Luck Riverboat Casino into the river. Fortunately firefighters arrived just in time to prevent any major damage from destroying that particular Rhy'Din nightspot. Investigators believe that the fire was intentionally set ablaze, but as of yet are uncertain as to who might have started the fire. Currently the authorities have no leads and have not been able to contact the casino manager or owner for questioning. Employees of the casino have also been unable to provide any information that might assist in solving the case.
Near Vehicular Manslaughter: Early Monday morning, local Rhy'Din law officials were called into the scene of a gruesome crime. Four men were discovered murdered outside of the Grumbling Ogre Pub in the early morning hours around a run down pick up truck. Investigators are still looking for leads as to who or what might have killed the four men who were later identified as Charles Gibson, Raymond Hobbs, Mack McKinney, and Louis Stockwell. One of the men, McKinney, was instantly killed by a gunshot wound that passed clean through the temple. The other four men were stabbed repeatedly and later tied up with what authorities believe to be garrote wire. Gibson was found having bled to death through a wound in his back and hand. Stockwell was discovered having been stabbed and burned alive by what investigators believe to be some form of volatile acid that has yet to be identified. Hobbs was stabbed and strangled to death by garrote wire. Currently the authorities have no leads or motive to go by. All four men have no police records and were believed to be model citizens.
Mutual Endeavors on the Web: Our IWA Archive Editor has been rather busy this past week and has only been able to code two past issues of UW for us. I have assured M not to worry about it, as we all get ourselves caught up in real life issues that keep us far more busy than we might prefer. Suffice it to say, issues 51 and 52 will be archived on the site very soon with more past issues to follow in the future. The Editor in Chief has been considering a new layout for the site, but her own expertise at HTML coding is nothing spectacular. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Red Dragon News: Taken from the Multiverse Minutes dated 8 May 2005: "There has been some improvement in the Conference room RDI this past week. Most of the disrupters are now showing up in whichever Member Room happens to be hosted now. This seems to confirm my suspicion that they're Locating HOSTs or RDIs and flocking there. For some reason, a few have gotten the idea that it's alright to play sexually graphic scenes in public. They usually get a rude awakening.
"The RDI Member Rooms are playing roulette by room owners being knocked off of AOL, and the room being infested with the same low lifes that are trying to ruin the Conference Room RDI."
--The Nefarious SM, standing in for, --The Elusive Jess Collaborative Headline Editor Ubique's Weekly Mutual Endeavors
In Other News... "The best way to convince a fool that he is wrong is to let him have his own way." -- Josh Billings
Finally it seems as if our IWA Character News Editor has been able to find enough extra time to compile the individual updates for us this week. Since she has been busy and missed out on a few things, I am going to include some of the older updates that were sent to me that did not get compiled into the list originally. So here we go!
Anna (AriannaRavenwood): The blue sister spent Mother's Day quietly with her son Brion and her husband Galen (Galen Ravenwood).
Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana): The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands. Ariana spent Mother's Day with her family.
Aya Aillister (Destiny of Music): Prom?! Prom is here already? Does she look good for it? Will Carolyn be happy to go with her? Will anyone laugh? Are the ear piercings healed enough to change? When did the poor bard-girl have such ... mundane concerns? This is going to be the best day ever!
Carolyn Valkonan (DreamsInBurgundy): Prom night, and the dreamer is more excited than ever. This last week has been fairly eventful, as she's been out and about and seeing friends. She took Dimitri (Benighted Oracle) home Saturday night for an impromptu piercing session at her mother's shop, the Rose's Thorn, and managed to talk Irina (Irina Braeden) in for yet another piercing. She'd be getting another tattoo herself, but she doesn't want to be all scabby for Prom. Got to look her best for her girlfriend, after all!
Cassandra Tyra (Against Descent): Business as usual for the Hieracthon. Dispensing justice and mourning the dead. At least she gave her mother a good present for Mother's Day. On the other hand, she hasn't heard anything about her enlistment yet, and imagines it's because they're still processing draft notices. Her last name does begin with a T, after all. She spent Sunday night along with Morgan (Morgan Rampage) preventing some would-be arsonists from torching the Lady Luck riverboat casino.
Dimitri Kephalos (Benighted Oracle): Well, it's official. At least to him. He definitely had both the best, and worst birthday on record, in his books anyway. And on a lark, he visited The Rose's Thorn late Saturday night. He's recovering from the experience with assistance.
Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik): Rumor has it that Ehz decided to stop by a bunch of random places and drop off flowers and home made cards on Sunday. Other than that, she's been rather reclusive.
Elaine (Elaine Aqua): No solo exploring jaunts for Elaine at all. She's hard at work with her studies at Northedge Academy. The eleven year old made a special breakfast for her Ma (ArianaMacGyldren) for Mother's Day. Elaine still takes care of the rest of Empress Emerald of Grayfur's kittens, though she's still grumpy that she's not allowed to name the kittens. She really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.
Emmy (Empress Grayfur): Emmy had the best Mother's Day ever. One of her kittens disappeared! While that might be bad for most Mother's, the Empress Emerald of Grayfur is quite pleased. Hopefully that one has found itself a new home and won't be coming back.
Faladar (Afreet Master): As of 4/26/05: Faladar hasn't been seen since being told to leave the Rambling Rose. Obviously Seamus didn't mean to banish the eccentric elf, but perhaps Faladar is giving his broken nose a chance to heal, and whipping up a batch of his famous "Apology Spinach" to smooth things over. Incorrigable's the word, but it's very likely Faladar wont bring chained prisoners to the Rambling Rose again.
Recently: Faladar went to war with very little hoopla, just a humble private parade in his honor, attended by hand-picked supporters and children who were each promised a silver dollar. Some people smoke, some people run laps. For Faladar, a self-aggrandizing parade puts him in the mood! Huzzah! At the moment he's blowing things up, ambushing enemies, and telling other people to blow up and ambush enemies. Faladar's Fidgety Fighting Foresters are on the frontlines!
Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random): The Linewalker has been spending more time being less reclusive these days. It seems as if curiosity is getting the better of her in regards to her true son Salvador. With her adopted children telling her more about his life, perhaps a truly motherly nature will develop. She has been very grateful to her daughter for the gifts that she has been leaving her, and is considering arranging a meeting with her son.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): In this week's installment, among the news of note for this native Rhydin resident was that she was spotted at the Rambling Rose and Medieval Taverns and the Silver Moon Inn this past week. Issue #34 of Bright Suns is out on the stands and available at Comic Masters. Irina is hard at work drawing Issue #35. Maybe that's why she's looking so tired lately. Oh, and her hair is still sky blue and magenta pink. Life goes on. Stay tuned
Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue): Fortunately, with the help of his friends, he has been able to address a concern that popped up this past week. Being such a nice guy actually paid off and nobody ended up killing each other over the issue. Hopefully the future will be a little brighter now. One thing's for sure, he's always been optimistic!
Kuldurg (Kuldurg): The half-ogre has been spotted around Rhydin the last few weeks, recruiting. Apparently he's been hired by defence forces to do something about the invading army. Anyone wanting to sign on with him should have their head examined, but he has survived the mercenary life so far. Maybe he's got something up his sleeve...
Lyssa (Lyssa Bjornson): Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason. She spent Mother's Day with her children Sven Thorin and Emara Ingrid.
Mer Harriss (Heavy Metal Mer): Nothing like a nice quiet Mother's Day at home. The Virtual Adept hadn't expected what she did get, though. Flowers (which sort of embarrassed her), a locket with a family picture of herself, Orion, and their adopted daughter Angelin (Angelin Vivalis) in it, and an entirely new, state-of-the-art tool kit. That was definitely the best present ever. Hopefully now she can keep the Jedi out of pieces and away from Coruscant more often.
Mesteno (Bronze Mesteno): (4/24) The Sadist has reappeared from his trip to Italy for a short visit, with the news that he'll be making a lengthier return at the beginning of May. The unfortunate young man had only been back ten minutes when he was confronted by a suspicious fellow asking questions and claiming to have contacts to the Italian government. Since then things have been typically hectic. He stopped in at the Rambling Rose to visit Seamus and Rei, bumped into Salvador at the Medieval Tavern where he learned of the downtown race-wars and was a participant in a rather brutal water fight. Nothing out of the ordinary
Morgan Knight (Morgan Rampage): Finals are out of the way. His class meets only once a week. Training continues in the mornings. Guitar practice and electronic entertainment amount to a certain amount of time. Sleep and eating, of course... But what's he doing with the rest of his time? Worrying. Worrying himself sick.
Salvador (Peculiar Silence): Could it be? Is it possible? Salvador is actually ... in love? Mention a certain name in his presence and he certainly seems to develop a sudden alteration in flesh coloration on his cheeks, that's for sure. While Sal has been avoiding admitting it as often as possible, he just can't seem to keep himself from grinning like a fool and actually, of all things, blushing! This distraction has caused him to miss two weeks of school that finally caught up to him when Profesor Harada (DontalIo Harada) caught him outside the Rambling Rose Tavern earlier this week. Now he just has to worry about not getting expelled and writing a fifteen page essay!
Stephen Valkonan (Stephen Valkonan): His masters' projects have been turned in for this semester, and hopefully he'll be able to show his face around a bit more. Though after the chaotic events of last week, he has to wonder about the intelligence of it all. Maybe he should just keep his head down?
Vadriel (Vadriel de Guise): (4/24) The heretic is still in England and is attempting to contact what remains of his family for questioning.
Valentine Shyre (XValentineShyreX): Ups and downs. Big decisions were made, but she's still not done. Can she actually be with someone...who loves someone else as well? She's not even sure she wants to try, but at least things have settled a bit. She's still got a lot of thinking to do. She's met a few new people. Vee, having been one, but not more than an introduction. Then there's Ai...he was fun, and made her laugh. She'd have to remember to keep him around more often. With everything that has happened, she could use the uplift. Now...what's it gonna take to finish piecing together her broken heart?

Dear Ava "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another." -- Charles Dickens
Dear Ava, I'm not often in the habit of writing to newspaper help people, though I'm sure you're all well meaning and such. This time however, I'm in a rough pudding, and i suppose this is as good a source of wisdom as any. You see, I'm a rather powerful officer in this current war, with a lot of fancy ribbons and colorful bits, but as the days have worn on (2) I'm beginning to suspect I accepted an assignment from the other side. Oh, but it's confusing, my dears! Everyone looks very much the same, everyone's nervous and/or angry, and nobody seems capable of saying anything difinitive. For example, "It's all the mixes fault that we have to fight this war", and "We dont care about race, we care about survival!". Imagine my chagrin if I HAD made a little oopsie. What ever shall I do? ~Faladar
Dear Faladar, My advice to you might be somewhat off the mark due to the simple fact that I have done my level best to keep out of the current troubles. My only real qualification for offering advice in this matter is the objectivity of much distance, but here goes. Have either of the contending sides openly declared their intentions, policies or membership? Only upon these can you base a decision of whether to join or oppose them. The question of policy is the most problematic, despite the fact that it is the most observable, for the simple reason that in a conflict of this kind it usually isn't long before both sides become comfortable with morally questionable tactics and strategies. If either side demonstrates a consistent policy, it is at least possible to discern an overall intention - if someone refuses to endanger a certain kind of bystander, or attacks some targets with preference to others, this gives some information about the kind of orders they receive. The membership of a group can also be telling - are you working with paladins or crusaders, stable citizens or psychopaths, fanatics or mercenaries? The saying goes 'never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself.' Do what in your heart you feel is right. Trust your instincts. As an enlisted officer you must never let those who follow your lead see that there is any doubt in your decisions no matter what the cost. I hope this can be of some help. And I hope this business settles down soon - though I doubt it will. If you believe in yourself, you and your men will live to see another day. Best of luck.
