Ubique's Weekly
A Mutual Endeavors Publication
Issue #77 ~ 26 April 2005
The Blurb "Against criticism a man can neither protest nor defend himself; he must act in spite of it, and then it will gradually yield to him." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Greetings and salutations, loyal readers. This week, Ubique's Weekly is brought to you in the format of 10 point Book Antiqua. Some of you may not have that particular font loaded on your systems, so I am assuming that everything may show as Arial instead. Do not fret. This is just another experiment amongst many that I plan on conducting within the next several weeks. In issue number 75, our IWA SSE presented the results of a survey that you readers participated in previously. With our readers divided on the issue of opinions of what would be the best presentable format for our publication, I decided to test the waters in hopes of some feedback. So far I have not received any feedback. By the end of my own study, if I do not receive any feedback, UW will go back to the way it once was. The simple 10 point Times New Roman that I prefer myself.
Do not be surprised if this week's issue of Ubique's Weekly is suprisingly short. The more time that goes on, the less updates I receive. My Ink Wire Associates are becoming as frustrated as myself in the incredible lack of participation from our readers. Today I am at a loss for encouraging words. However, I will try my best to present things as I know them based on what little information has been shared with me. Instead of boring you all with my tendency to ramble, I'll just get moving on ahead with the news as we have it. Do enjoy.
Top Story! "If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts." -- Albert Einstein
This week's Top Story! comes directly from the Nefarious SM herself. IWA SSE (DarkAngelGenesis) has been very busy dealing with the demands of real life for quite some time now. This week we did not receive any inspiring article based on Out of Character knowledge, information, or discussion from her end. However, there is quite a bit to discuss concerning the efforts of interactive collaborative freeform role-playing. A lot of it has to do with the widely shared environment that everyone knows and loves. That being the entity that is Rhy'Din. What is it? Where did it come from? Where is it going now? There are so many questions that come to mind when Rhy'Din is brought up, and those are only a choice few. While we do not expect to answer all of these questions directly in one little article, we are going to try to cover quite a few things.
Several months ago, a small group of players (including myself) banded together and started formulating the basis of an in depth storyline that we hoped would be both memoroable and exciting for other players to become involved with. On March 29, 2005 in Ubique's Weekly issue number 75, a Storyline Spotlight was printed in an effort to kickstart the storyline into action. The article was intended to capture interest with the headline "Twenty seven Dead After City Hall Bombing." The entire article can be viewed on the Red Dragon Inn message boards under the Writer & Role-player Recruiting folder. The precise thread in question is titled Starting a War, provided also here as a link to avoid unnecessarily repeating myself. Those of you who have actually been reading the newsletter are aware of this. However, due to recent events, I am of the assumption that more and more people are prone to skimming instead of actually reading. A pity that I should feel as if I am wasting my time. C'est la vie.
It has always been the goal of Mutual Endeavors and Ubique's Weekly to not only keep players informed, but to encourage particpation and cooperation amongst players as well. For quite some time now, we who created the War Storyline were of the opinion that players were enjoying the mystery and intrigue that we have been presenting. Until recently. Each week that I compile the newsletter, I try to keep readers up-to-date on the continued efforts of the Mutual Endeavors group and community by including headlines titled "Mutual Endeavors on the Web." By now, you should all be aware that a lot of the Out of Character activity is taking place on the world wide web in addition to this newsletter. With an increase in player to player discussion and collaboration, Ubique's Weekly is steadily becoming nothing more than overview of events that have transpired. This, amazingly enough, is the true purpose of UW. Not everything that happens can be shared in these e-mails alone. There are countless play logs, behind-the-scenes discussions, and so much more that involve the War Storyline. Most of the details are still being hammered out, finely chiseled and tuned. We, being only human, are not infallible. Mistakes have been made. Miscommunication occurs. Differing opinions exist.
On April 18, 2005, Mutual Endeavors member PrlUnicorn approached the floor (so to speak) to finally address her concerns in regards to the storyline. A post that started off as simply Something to say on the ME LiveJournal Community, quickly errupted into a philosophical debate on what Rhy'Din should be and how players should respect their boundaries when dealing with the setting as it is prescribed. There are 61 responses to that post, most of which are from myself. After a little suggestion and encouragment, I managed to get other members involved with the debate, and since that time many more posts have been placed upon the journal. I would also like to encourage you, Ubique's Weekly subscribers and readers, to take the time to review the posts on the journal. If you have a LiveJournal of your own, I also encourage you to request to join the Community so that more opinions can be voiced instead of those of the choice few who currently are members.
PrlUnicorn also took the discussion to the Red Dragon Inn Community message boards under the Players Assisting Players folder, also known as PaP. Questions were raised if it is acceptable to have A War Within Rhydin City?, and I am pleased with the number of positive responses that were presented. While I am happy with the acceptance of the War Storyline as it is being slowly unveiled, I am still concerned with the somewhat ethical disagreement in regards to it all. Much of this has already been and is still being discussed on the Mutual Endeavors LiveJournal Community.
With something as large scale as the War Storyline, I do not feel that it should all be restricted to only those of us who are members of Mutual Endeavors. Nor do I feel that it should be kept to only those who subscribe to Ubique's Weekly, a member base that highly outnumbers ME. Recent in-play interraction has begun to spread word of the potential invasion into other areas through the support and curiosity of other players and their characters. If anyone has any questions concerning the Storyline, please do not hesitate to ask. At this time I feel that I am at liberty to divulge the contact list of the masterminds behind the project: AOL members Ehzoterik, The Multifarious, DontalIo Harada, SmileFang, and DarkAngelGenesis. Use the link provided, or simply send us an e-mail to those @aol.com addresses if you would like to be more involved somehow. Be it asking for a little more information or whatever comes to mind.
The purpose of Mutual Endeavors is to band together and work as a group to always collaborate. Not all members are all a part of the same storylines. It is simply a gathering of those who believe in the tennants of freeform cooperative role-playing. On the world wide web, it stands as a place where those minds can gather to discuss ideas and iron out the kinks. The quote I used to begin this article is fitting for my closing statement. What is being presented now need not necessarily be the ultimate conclusion to the War Storyline. Like all great works, editing is to be expected. If something seems a little too far-fetched, please do not hesitate to contact us with your concerns. Role-playing should be a fun and entertaining recreational activity, not a power-struggle or headache. So help us to help you get the best out of your experience as well as our own. A dream we all strive to keep alive. Please, give us your feedback. We really would like to know what other players are thinking. Don't be shy.

Biological Anomaly Discovered! Local Scientists Unravel Mystery of New Breed
The South Rhy'Din Gazette
April 23, 2005
Scientists believe they have found a new mammalian species, a humanoid canine that was recently spotted in selective areas of Rhy'Din City. Citizens who reported seeing the creatures seemed concerned for their own welfare while wandering the streets at night. Rumors of monster attacks have been increasing in the past few weeks, and scientific investigators went out in hopes of capturing one of the beasts to learn more about them. Leading animal biologist Rupert Kirkare and his team were blessed with the gift of a carcass earlier in the week and have concluded a study on what is believed to be a full report on what these creatures truly are.
"These creatures are rather large," reports Kirkare. "The specimen we received was nearly seven feet in length, but it only weighed in at one hundred and fifty pounds." Kirkare further described the animal as appearing to be a crossbreed between a jackal and some unidentified humanoid species. "The specimen had the most disgustingly foul odor!" proclaimed Kirkare.
Witnesses who have seen the creatures reported mixed feelings of fear and curiosity. While some citizens have suffered injury and even death from attacks, those that have survived all conclude the same thing. "These monsters are huge! And stinky," said local Rhy'Din resident Polly Jane Tello. "They have these little glowing red eyes and they just give me the heebie jeebies thinking of them."
In reference to the eyes, Kirkare and his team were a little perplexed. "When we examined the anatomy of the eye, we discovered no logical reason as to why they might glow. There didn't seem to be any retina or other obvious design to reflect light." In fact, scientists claimed the the eyes looked like nothing more than little black glass marbles.
"The head really looks like it belongs on a jackal," says animal expert Fiona Timmerman. "If you've ever read any Terran history, I'd say I was looking right at the face of Anubis." The animal is reported to have tall ears and a long snout. Overall the body is covered in very fine, coarse black hair.
"The hide is really something," says Kirkane. "Thick and tough like well-treated leather."
Associating metaphysical expert Yumel Wishingstar reported that the hide also had some sort of magically defensive property. When subjecting the animal's hide to a series of simple and complex spells, "everything I threw at it was ineffective. The skin either absorbed or reflected every spell my team cast at it."
Polly Jane Tello also informed investigators that, "I got scratched by one of them and I remember not being able to move for 'bout half an hour!" Researchers were intent on investigating this further.
"The claws, teeth, and barb on the end of the tail all seem to share the same properties," says Kirkane. "This animal has venom sacks located in the roof of the mouth, wrists, and tip of the tail." Testing the venom concluded it to be some sort of neurotoxin that effects motor function, making it impossible for the afflicted person to move for at least thirty minutes.
Kirkane and his team further discovered that the animal seemed to have no digestive track. "It has a stomach," reports Kirkane, "of that much we're certain. But there are no intestines to speak of. We're not exactly sure how these animals get their nutrition." In the stomach the scientist were baffled to find not food, but swallowed objects including: a rusty dagger, a large black rock, and even a rusted longsword!
Yumel Wishingstar and his team studied those items further to conclude that, "Those items were once magical. The dagger and sword both had engravings on the blade written in an arcane dialect. The rock we aren't completely sure about, but we feel it must have also once been perhaps an enchanted gem."
"If," Kirkane added, "these animals eat at all, we aren't sure how they digest. By the muscle tisse in the body, we imagine it is similar to that of a common owl. Coughing up processed pellets instead of defecating."
"When it comes to procreation of the species," Kirkane went on to say, "we're a little baffled about that as well." They believe the animal they studied to be female due to similarities in the anatomical structure. However, "There is no evident uterus so these animals may not be mammal at all."
The scientists say they will be conducting more studies on the animals that the team is currently calling Canis sapiens. Kirkane has advised that citizens be cautious around these animals. "We have yet to see a living specimen in action, and based on our own findings believe them to be dangerous. Don't provoke them if you can avoid it."
Wishingstar had this to say: "I'll be keeping my spell books and special items locked up at home for awhile. You should too."
More on this story as it develops.

This Just In "You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try." -- Beverly Sills
Ubique's Weekly has one very frustrated CHE these days. With all the different storylines out there these days, I must say I'm amazed that no updates have been coming in. In an effort to boost morale, I suggested to Jess that if no updates come in from other players to simply do what I have done myself in the past. That being to make up things based on play that she has been involved in herself. If everyone would take the time to write one small blurb about something they have witnessed or been a part of and send it in, we would have so much more to share with you. But these are they headlines as they stand now.
Headlines
A Call to Arms: Many citizens have been nervous about the rumors of draft notices being received recently. Those who have received them have yet to say who is sending them, but many are of the opinion that they should be answering the call. Rumors continue about the possibility of invasion from a foreign nation bent on conquering Rhy'Din city, and many citizens feel that it is their duty to band together to protect their rights. While some still take for granted the liberties and freedom that the city offers its citizens, claiming that the draft letters are nothing more than a hoax. Citizens are warned to read the fine print as none of our reporters have yet received any letters of the kind. No one is certain precisely who these notices are coming from at this point in time.
The Order of Wheat?: Rhy'Din has become a breeding ground for hate in the past weeks. Citizens remain in an uproar of communal discontent over the possibility of potential invasion. Individual public speakers who appear to be priests of some yet unidentified order are encouraging unrest. These individuals all have in common a style of dress consisting of white robes with a brown overlay and proudly bearing a bronze pin on their shoulders in the shape of a wheat sheaf. Opinions are divided in regards to their preachings in public places. They speak of purity of all races and the abomination of half-breeds as well as the threat of mages and self-proclaimed deities. These public speakings have inspired riots and hate crimes throughout the city, yet militia members and other public security officials do not seem to consider these propaganda spouting holymen as any real threat. Opinions vary.
Mutual Endeavors On the Web: No, this is not a repeat of last week's similarily titled headline. Progress is still being made on the Great Archiving Project with the assistance of Mutual Endeavors member Bronze Mesteno acting as IWA's Archive Editor. Past Ubique's Weekly issues numbers 41 through 45 have been coded and will soon be up on the website for review. So far, so good.
The Mutual Endeavors Community LiveJournal is also receiving more and more activity lately. If you have a LiveJournal and would like to join the community, please do not hesitate to submit a request through the site. If you would like to and do not know how to do so, pleas ask. With the information that has been shared with me recently, I am curious to know whether or not I should open the Community to anonymous posting as well. I am willing to do so, providing that those who use that liberty remember to include a signature line to identify themselves with. Please send me your thoughts on this matter either by e-mailing

State of the RDI: As of April 17, 2005; excerpt taken from The Multiverse Minutes: "It finally happened. The Member Room Red Dragon Inn has been hijacked. Panther had an unannounced Windows update and his computer was rebooted, causing him to lose the Room Owner tools. Until this situation can be corrected, the correct members room is The Red Dragon Inn. You can go through the RDI Back Door on Panther's web page to find out which room is in use at any one time. The URL is http://www.freeformroleplaying.com/chatrooms.htm The "shout" list will show you where to go. This is the "Back Door to all RDI rooms. The room count has been up in the mid to high 30s for the past week or so, and the several times I've dropped in, there has been much role playing in progress! An attempted kidnapping, among other interesting things.
"The Conference Room RDI, where the room count usually runs between 15 and 20, is starting to lose appeal for the disruptive element. Nobody left for them to harass? "By their own admission, they are between 12 to 14 years old, and some have been migrating to the Member Room. Maybe they'll learn something over there?
"Whatever happens, HOST Game Grail, Ronnie, Obsdn, Kat, Dey, and Hunter plan to keep hosting on their published schedule in the Conference Room RDI. There may be more, but these are the ones who've announced our intent to not quit just because we're unarmed. This will be another way for the unwashed multitude to learn how to role play, if they'd only pay attention."
War In Rhy'Din: There are many misconceptions being conjured up in regards to the War Storyline. This week's Top Story! discussed this a little bit. A few things players should know is simply that War has not yet breached the City gates. As things now stand, there is only the potential for invasion. Currently there is only talk of possible War. Characters receiving "draft notices" to join the side of "good." The creators of the storyline are still hashing out more details and we will inform you all when we have something more concrete to share. For more ideas, please see the Mutual Endeavors Community LiveJournal and review the discussions. Most of the involved play is happening in the Rambling Rose Tavern at this point in time. We will try to keep you all informed of scheduled events in advance in the future.

In Other News... "Scandal is gossip made tedious by morality." -- Oscar Wilde
Jess is not the only frustrated Ink Wire Associate these days. I hear tell from Ellyn that nobody sends her updates these days. That truly is a shame. For whatever reason, I did not receive a complete compilation from her this week, so there is very little to share with everyone in this issue as far as individual characters are concerned.
Dimitri Kephalos (Benighted Oracle): It seems the recently arrived blind youth has mannaged to make himself a few friends. After talking with his new friends Morgan and Irina, he has secured both a job at the local University, and more permanant lodgings. Seen most recently at the Rambling Rose Tavern where he had a run in with Shadi (Shadibadoo) which left him shaken and seeking answers.
Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden): In this week's installment, among the news of note for this native Rhydin resident was that she was spotted at just the Rambling Rose Tavern this past week. Issue #32 of Bright Suns is out on the stands and available at Comic Masters. Irina has sent Issue #33 to the printers ahead of schedule, got to meet Goofy at Disney World with Jack (Jackrabbit Blue) this past weekend, and is halfway through drawing Issue #34. Maybe that's why she's looking so tired lately. Oh, and her hair is still magenta pink. Life goes on. Stay tuned.
Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue): Mostly he has been hiding in a hole these days, what with all the talk of War and all that. Though he has plans to stay as cheerful as possible. In an attempt to keep Irina from freaking out, he took her to Disney World this past weekend for some much needed fun and laughter. It's a small world afterall.
James Tanner (Gentleman Jim T): The gentleman gambler, having run afowl of violence, in his own establishment no less, has been scarecly seen recently. Perhaps he is just laying low in order to discourage further attacks against his person. Most recently he has been seen gracing the Rambling Rose Tavern, however briefly, on Thursday. It seems he was somewhat concerned about members of the casino's security team. Also of major importance to the gentleman gambler, he has undertaken the greatest gamble of all ... He's engaged!
Rachael Wynter (Rachael Wynter): The scarred woman in black was recently seen at the Lady Luck gambling casino handling security there.
Salvador (Peculiar Silence): Everywhere he turns, Sal is making new friends. Counting amongst them the blind youth Dimitri (Benighted Oracle), a man known as Nemo (EagerlyLamenting), and a hippogriff by the name of Feathyr (Talons n Hooves). The last of which wanted to go home with him. He wouldn't have objected to it, but his father might have. He has met quite an assortment of interesting people, but he's not sure if all of them can be called friends just yet. Nemo, for one, seems to have a severly different opinion of the dog monsters Sal has been encountering. Despite that, he was able to acquire some interesting information about them that might come in handy in the future.
