Ubique's Weekly

Double Edition

A Mutual Endeavors Publication

Issue #73 ~ 8 March 2005

The Blurb

Well here we are again, loyal readers.  Two week's worth of procrastination finally coming into focus into one immense newsletter.  Over the past month or so I've had a lot of time to think about the state of Ubique's Weekly.  About where it has been and where it is going.  But throughout my lifetime I have come to terms with the fact that it does nobody any good to worry about the future or dwell on the past.  I have received a handfull of e-mails and instant messages from a vast number of you with words of encouragement and praise.  What it all boils down to is the fact that you've all been right all along.  Ubique's Weekly is worth the effort I put into it, so long as you keep reading and being a part of all the Mutual Endeavors that freeform cooperative chat-based roleplaying is all about.

In these first paragraphs I would like to take a moment to thank my dedicated
Ink Wire Associates who have helped me struggle through these difficult times.  Writer's Block has taken over in regards to Ubique's Weekly.  For the longest time I couldn't think of a decent thing to say.  But over the course of the past month I have seen an improvement in roleplaying and cooperation.  I have been a part of arguments and heated discussions concerning friendship and collaboration.  There are doubts and fears in our inner circle of players, and I hope that over time we can all overcome these self-defeating thoughts.  To start off this week's issue I would like to take a moment to talk about the Ink Wire Associates in comparison to myself.

It was brought to my attention that perhaps others do not trust my co-editors as much as you all trust me with your secrets and information.  For over a year you have all been subjected to my voice and style in writing and putting this publication together.  There was a time in which I left co-editor AG in charge and the entertainment became a little stale and repetitive.  The past two issues were compiled by two of my other co-editors and I think they all have done a terrific job in doing what they do.  The fact of the matter is that these are people in who I have placed my trust.  Like myself they have all been quite efficient in compiling all that they cover anonymously.  That some of you perhaps do not trust them as unyieldingly as I do is a reality check I had never expected to encounter.  And when faced with that knowledge it makes me feel as if I am also unworthy of your trust.

The
Ink Wire Associates and myself are a group of dedicated players who know the value of anonymity and secrecy.  To the best of my knowledge none of us has ever used the information gathered in these pages to an unfair advantage.  Having multiple screen names and alternative characters revealed to us is not our goal.  The idea is simply to spread the news about what has been happening with which characters in the many varied worlds of roleplaying.  Though your news is our news, none of us would ever think to use such information against any of you.  I have entrusted many of my co-editors with a variety of secrets over the years, and I have yet to be disappointed by their dedication to keeping confidential information locked away and hidden.  By not trusting them I feel perhaps that I can also not be trusted by some of you, but I am willing to accept that it takes time to get know a person and decide for oneself whether or not the risk is worth it.  So I have prepared an alternative solution to this problem.

While I had hoped that I would be making it easier on myself by allocating certain areas of the newsletter to other people for compilation, it seems that I still have quite a large role to play in the grand scheme of things.  Allow me to be your confidant, and anything you would like to see printed simply send it to me.  In the future I will forward everything anonymously to the appropriate
Ink Wire Associate in a manner that will not reveal to them who is who in the roleplaying world.  It cannot be expected of me to be able to compile everything with the amount of information I do receive these days.  It would take me several hours to put it all together, time that I do not want to waste.  Time that could be spend enjoying myself as all of you do.  I do not expect any of you to be restricted to who you send your mail to.  If it is easier just to send everything to me, then do so.  I'm pretty well-versed in what tidbits of information should go in which sections.  Afterall, I created the newsletter.  Heh.

So here we are again.  The Nefarious SM is in control of the situation once more.  UW's
Ink Wire Associates can rest easy and continue to do what they have always done.  Which for some of them may simply be twiddling their thumbs.  But if you readers help me by sending me what you've got, then maybe I can help give them something to do with their spare time as well.  If anonymity is your preference, be sure to let me know.  Those who wish to remain anonymous have always had the creativity enough to do so.  There are many ways to achieve this goal.  Use your imaginations.  But most of all, just enjoy yourself and play!  And with all that said, I really think it's time to move on with the news that has been backed up for the past couple of weeks.

Top Story!

Hello readers.  It has been said before that people do not read this publication, but my personal opinion is that people read, they just do not choose to participate.  For example, my job here is to give you all a storyline spotlight, which essentially is a synopsis of a current storyline that you happen to have your characters in.  With one exception, not a soul out there has ever sent me any submissions.  Everything else has been gathered by my own observations.  Now I wonder, is that what all of you presume my job here to be?  Is there an expectation that I am supposed to function as a roving reporter gleaning as much information as I can and put it all together for submission?  If that is what is expected of me, I would like to know.  Please, please tell me people!  Why am I not getting submissions?  Is it insecurity?  Perhaps one feels that they do not have the writing skills to put anything feasible together.  Is it privacy?  This is something I can well understand, and I myself am the most guilty of this.  Not everyone wishes the world at large to know about what their characters are up to.  Is it simple procrastination?  Perhaps some of you out there might have an idea to write, but other things come up, and before one knows it the deadline has come and gone.  Perhaps it is simply a lack of time.  Real life happens and one does not always have the time to get out there and play.  This also happens to me more frequently than I care to admit.

The point to all of this is I am asking people out there for feedback.  I want to know what one expects out of this publication, and out of myself.  What do you, the reader think this publication should be about?  What should it focus on?  The Editor In Chief has a vision for this, but perhaps her vision does not match yours.  In fact, I can nearly guarantee that.  Everyone is an individual, and everyone has their own wants, desires, and expectations.  For this publication to be truly great, we need to listen to the reader’s wishes.  However, that cannot be done at all if those wishes are left unsaid.

So please.  Do not be afraid to write.  Even if it is something as basic as “I do not write anything because I thought idea X was the dumbest thing ever.”  I still want to know.  I am currently working on a poll that I plan to send out next issue.  Until then, all I ask out of you people is that you think about what you think we should be doing here and TELL me.  I will keep things confidential, and if I wish to repeat a reader's comment in a future article, I WILL ask before doing so, and without permission I just will not.  It is that simple.  I just thought I should make that clear.

Storyline Spotlight

We are currently seeking submissions for this section.  A good example of what would be accepted as a good Spotlight is any write-up of a current room in which players gather to play.  In the past we have run articles on the Silver Moon Inn, the Rambling Rose Tavern, and the newest riverboat casino known as The Lady Luck.  Descriptions and synopses of establishments in which characters gather are wonderful collections to input into this section of the publication.  But do not limit yourselves there.  Many characters are involved in rather intricate storylines that perhaps do not have a base of operations so to speak.  The Editor In Chief has heard rumors of a coffee house establishment that she would like to see a write-up on in the future at some point.  There is also a rumor of a thieves' guild in the greater Rhy'Din area.  All of this and more!  Please send us anything that you think could be used in an effort to forward information and get players involved.  Either send it to the SSE DarkAngelGenesis or the EIC Ehzoterik.  Heck, even send it to both of them if you are uncertain.  No matter how you do it, just share your news with us.  We'll be certain to spread the word for you if you're willing to cooperate.

This Just In

Next to the two above sections, this is perhaps the one in which an Ink Wire Associate is most overlooked and neglected.  Jess is just as excited as Gen-Gen is about putting your news together, and yet she struggles weekly just to find anything worthy of print.  A little creativity in first-hand account witnessing wouldn't hurt, but we can't expect her to be omnipotent.  We may be here, there, and everywhere ... but we aren't gods here, people.  The Headlines are perhaps just as confusing as the two above sections.  I have been informed that people just don't know what is expected out of them.  So again I'll make it simple for you.  Just send me (Ehzoterik) your news, and I'll send copies of what I think is acceptable for this section over to Jess.  Though by now I had expected our readers to know what qualifies for a Headline as opposed to an individual Character Update.  In this section I expect to be overviews of running group storylines that are already in progress.  Good examples, despite their continued repetition, are the ones that AG had running for several months when she stood in as Interim Editor.  Just look at our past issues that are archived on the site (something I am still working on completing).  But as it is, here's what we have in store for you this week.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail, Hopping Down The Ranch Trail:  In the tradition of the Spook Spectacular Haunted Hayride and Winter Wonderland events at Dr. Maranya Valkonan's ranch, the good Doctor and her gardener Jack Bishop are planning an Easter Egg Hunt event on March 27th, the proceeds going to benefit programs at Riverview Clinic as well as bring laughter and fun to local orphans and underprivileged children.  Bring your baskets and your sense of humor! (The Valkonan family in no way, shape, form, or fashion take responsibility for any damages by the pranks, jokes, handshakes, or general contact with Jack Bishop.)

Machine Made Man:  Oh where, oh where has the coffee machine golem gone.  Oh where, oh where could Caife be?  Many patrons of the Silver Moon Inn have recently been subjected to the cold hard facts that that lovable decorative coffee-slinging contraption has turned up missing in the past couple of weeks.  In its place is an actual human male who claims to be Caife himself!  No one quite knows how this happened, not even the golem-made-man.  See the next section for more details.

The State of the RDI:
Copied from the February 27th edition of The Multiverse Minutes:  "The Red Dragon Inn has started downhill again. The past few evenings have been almost solid Out of Character chatter and total disruption of those trying to role play. The language is atrocious, and Notify AOL seems to be useless. The only reasonable solution is to rearm the HOSTs, make CAT mean something again, or find a way to attach the Lightning Bolt of Doom (from the Room Owner's tools) to the HOST name. Suggestions of "go make your own room"  aren't feasible, since it will be only one day before some snert hijacks the room and homesteads it.

"Requests to cease the Out Of Character chatter and watch the language usually draw some smart remark about what we can do with our "rules". (Who wants to hear what flavor lip gloss they're wearing???)  The regular members are again leaving the room; some with comments about leaving AOL entirely. I wonder how many members this latest move will cost them?"

There are also rumors flying around about the lack of HOST power in the RDI Community.  It is suspected that the only hope left for the Red Dragon Inn is through the influence of valuable and dedicated players who wish to see the dream continue to live.  Though with these rising doubts and concerns, the motivation to take a stand has dwindled.  Is there anyone left who can save our playground and turn it back into the realm of beauty and wonderment it once was?

Words of Encouragement:
During the Editor In Chief's weeks of lacking motivation, she received quite a number of e-mails and instant messages from readers who thought perhaps she needed some words of encouragement.  Here is one such letter that has been greatly appreciated and helpful in motivating her to get back to business:

Dear Ehz, you are the very best, always. Don't you think that all of us know how much work it is to do this every week? Eh. We know! Do not be so hard for yourself. We will wait gladly and enjoy when it comes. And ja, I am saying We...if anyone complains for you, then they are the losers. But you...you are a Winner in my book, even so.

Guthorm's

SM has decided to post these words here as a reminder not only to herself, but to the dozens who subscribe to this publication and read it weekly.  UW would be nothing without dedication and support such as this.

In Other News...

Once again with the delay in publication due to the EIC's procrastination efforts, the individual Character Updates for this issue will be separated into two parts.  Which pretty much means that this section is going to be quite enormous once again this week.  Do enjoy!

Character Updates for the week of 02/28/05:

Aya Aillister (Destiny of Music): The poor bard girl is so, so sick it isn't even funny.  She can't sing, she can barely speak.  All she can do is stay snuggled up tight next to Carolyn (DreamsInBurgundy), warm in the shawl that her best friend made for her.  Hey... being sick isn't so bad...

Carolyn Valkonan (DreamsInBurgundy)She's worried about her best friend, but she's doing all that she can to take care of her. It certainly doesn't seem like a cold that's got Aya (Destiny of Music) down, but even Carolyn can't figure out what it IS.  How perplexing! At least the shawl she knitted herself was well-received.

Cassandra Tyra (
Against Descent)She's gotten a new library card and a new apartment to go with her new lease on life.  This week, she's getting a new roommate in her friend Irina (Irina Braeden), and she might even be getting a new job, after visiting a certain riverboat with her friend Morgan (Morgan Rampage)...

Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random):  Still hibernating.

Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden):  In this week's installment, among the news of note for this native Rhydin resident was that she was spotted at the Rambling Rose Tavern this past week.   She's preparing to move in with her friend Cass (Against Descent) this week.   Issue #31 of Bright Suns is due out this week.  Stay tuned.

James Tanner (Gentleman Jim T):  The Gentleman gambler has spent most of the last week worried and nervous over the Grand Opening of His new venture, The Lady Luck, a riverboat casino. It seems she was well named for the celebration went off without a hitch. After the grand opening, an event occurred that has him deep in thought as whether to Fold, or bet the house.

Mer Harriss (Heavy Metal Mer):  Life seems quiet nowadays for the Virtual Adept.  She likes that just fine. Of course, the sharp mind behind the sharp tongue never does stop working. Maybe the Jedi has an idea as to what she'll come up with next?

Micarryl (Still More Drow):  Elghinyrr lu' yin'xir'ziji.

Morgan Knight (Morgan Rampage): The emotional rollercoaster isn't quite visible as such from the outside, but it's there, and it's rough.  He's gone from angry to miserable to oddly manic like a Pong ball, without much warning even to himself.  Still, after an odd conversation with Irina (Irina Braeden) and Cass (Against Descent), some time spent with his family, and a few odd plans, maybe he can at least go on living life again.

Orion Ksyhsravor (
Orion Ksyhsravor):   Spending a lot of time in a rather quiet lethargy.  Work at the Academy has slowed down, giving him more time to spend with Mer, and he likes that just fine.

Pleione (
Stellar Balinese):  Still missing.

Stephen Valkonan (Stephen Valkonan):  He went home for the weekend, to a happy family reunion. He also took Cat (Matakhat Cain) with him, and promised Irina (Irina Braeden) and Morgan (Morgan Rampage) some real home-cooked food.

Terrance Tomar-Duncan (
Terrance Tomar):   Terry is still out of town with no word aside from a message to kin stating that there are "delays."

Zetarris/Jim Smith (Zetarris):  Thanks to friendly neighbors and relations, his child is not running amok in his absence. He is still gone and someone had to sign for his shipment of milking ladders in his stead.

Character Updates for the week of 03/06/05:

Caife (The Multifarious) It's getting weird.  After missing his usual shifts as bartender at the Silver Moon, the Coffee Machine Golem showed up last week - as a human.  Whether this is a human with Caife's memories, or Caife actually transformed into a human  is still a bit of an open question.   For now, he's resolved to at least try next week's shifts.

Cassandra Tyra (Against Descent)She's very happy with her new roommate and her new apartment. The verdict for her new job as a dealer at the Lady Luck casino, however, hasn't come in yet. Time will tell.

Carolyn Valkonan (DreamsInBurgundy):  Words aren't enough to describe just how happy Carolyn is that Aya's feeling better!  She's absolutely ecstatic!

Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan (Maranya Valkonan) She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn and a young woman with emotional problems.  The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic.  Maranya is a bit confused by Jack's plans to run an Easter Egg hunt on the ranch, but since the proceeds will not only benefit Riverview Clinic but the orphans and other underprivileged children invited to participate, she is very much in favor of this endeavor.  Otherwise, the good Doctor has stuck to dealing with her patients at Riverview Clinic and making things comfortable for her new Siamese kitten, Zorro, at her ranch.

Dris (BardGaIIant):  Seems that the bard has been finding more and more time out of the house in the past month.  Not only has he been seen in public, but he has also been accompanied by a certain towering Spaniard!  With this new lease on life he likes to call rediscovered youth, things are looking up.

Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random):  Still hibernating.

Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden):  In this week's installment, among the news of note for this native Rhydin resident was that she was spotted at the Rambling Rose Tavern, the Silver Moon Inn and the Lady Luck gambling casino this past week.   She's moved in with her friend Cass (Against Descent) this week.   Issue #31 of Bright Suns is out on the stands and available at Comic Masters.  Irina is hard at work on Issue #32.  Stay tuned.

Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue):  Someone has come out of hiding and is enjoying himself immensely.  Catching up with old friends and getting to know new ones has been very therapeutic for the Valkonan Ranch's gardener.  All this time spent socializing has given him some new ideas on how to spend his time working.  He's even been able to convince the good Doctor to host an Easter Egg Hunt event this year.  Oh does he ever have plans...

Joker
(
SMI Joker, Richard D Harker)The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn decided to change his shift back to Saturdays since the business upsurge was a fluke.  Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker).  The eldest Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan).   Joker enjoys trying out the present Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock) got him on some of the winding roads around Rhydin.  He recently received stern lectures, some involving needles and thrown pots and pans, on the evils of chocolate cheesecake and vows to leave it alone in the future.

Mesteno (Bronze Mesteno):  Rumor has it he's gone off to Italy for awhile to take care of some sort of business.

Morgan Knight
(
Morgan Rampage) Morgan got his revenge. That's just fine the way it is for him.

Pleione (Stellar Balinese):  Yup.  She's still MIA.

Salvador
(
Peculiar Silence):  Winter is slowly coming to an end and the young Spaniard is starting to feel it.  Lately he has become more restless and determined in the paths he walks, however unclear they may be.  Recently he finally worked up the nerve to put an end to a lengthy game of Hide and Seek, calling in the troops to hunt down Shadi and convince him to come back home.  The development of Caife becoming a man and a new woman named 'Shard tending the bar at the Silver Moon has him a little unsettled.  But that is nothing in comparison to everything else he has been feeling lately.  Change is certainly in the air...

Vadriel (Vadriel de Guise):  Seems as if the Spook Master has taken off to England for a bit.  Who knows?

Dear Ava

In this week's issue we have a new section to present to you all.  For the purposes of amusement and entertainment, we here at Ubique's Weekly thought that by finally adding in the Dear Somebody section we might be able to encourage more cooperation and collaboration.  As well as a little creativity excercises for our readers.  Our newest Ink Wire Associate co-editor, The Multifarious, is very excited to get this project up and running.  And we are also very excited to see some progress in this new endeavor.  Now none of this has to be striclty from the words of your own characters.  Feel free to make up anything that might pose as a good question for Ava to tackle in her editorials.  Just bear in mind that Ava is strictly fictional, as should be the problems addressed to her.  Heh heh heh.  So without further ado, here's a brief introductory of Ava herself.

Hello!  I am named Ava the Kestrel, child of the Lands of the Dawn.  I've been asked to author a column for this periodical, and while my schedule doesn't seem to permit much distraction, it has recently come to my attention that most of my time is spent - reading!  I suppose if I'm going to spend time in literary pursuits, there's no reason not to indulge the honorable and erudite compilers of this publication, and read the missives submitted to Mutual Endeavors with an eye to replying in an instructive or edifying fashion.  It is my hope that I might do credit to those who requested such efforts for their faith in me.
As for my background, I was born in the further lands of Elysium, the Lands of Dawn, to a mortal woman named Ava Iarven and one of the mighty Guardinals, Weltwing of the Tower of Rose.  My mother and my father taught me love of the upper airs - and oh! how I remember flight!  but my wings will no longer bear me thither in my womanhood - but it was in the humble halls of the Ursinals that I learned to love books and learning.  As I grew, and my wings no longer bore me, I continued my training in fleetness and precision, but the sedentary life kept my heart, and so I became a student by nature and a teacher by calling.
So it is that I am a librarian, guide and guardian of one of Rhydin's Grand Archives.  So it is that while my work is worthy and pleasing, it keeps me diverted from discourse with the greater society of Rhydin's folk, a diversion that I find terribly habit forming in its own way.  So it is that while my own training is somewhat specialized, it does permit me to find, eventually, the answer to virtually any question that I cannot answer from my own experience.  Try my skill; I humbly await your missives.

Silver Moon Inn : Looking for a good place for your characters to meet and interact?  Check out the Silver Moon Inn, located in the member created rooms under Arts & Entertainment.  But before you jump on in and join the fray, you should take a moment to look over the Rules & Regulations that correspond to the environment.  Once you've grown accustomed as to what to expect, feel free to see what the SMI might have in store for you.

Subscribe Now! : Ubique's Weekly is a publication provided by the not-for-profit organization known as Mutual Endeavors.  As a free source of literary entertainment, you as the reader have the liberty to send out copies of our publication to whomever you think might enjoy the information shared.  To save yourselves the hassle of constantly forwarding what you might find amusing, feel free at any time to inform your friends and coconspirators to contact the Editor to request their very own future copies of Ubique's Weekly at no cost to them whatsoever.  It's as simple as clicking this link here above.

Victims Wanted : Roleplayers seeking "throwaway characters" for recently developing storyline.  If you have a currently existing character that you're just plain sick of, or are interested in creating a "victim" please contact Inkwire Associates for more information.  The players behind the characters have asked to remain confidential in their interviewing process, but are encouraging everyone to join in on the "gory fun!"  Keep an eye on the weekly Headlines concerning murder victims to get a feel for what is expected.  The more the victims are actually in the public eye before their eradication, the more believable the players feel this storyline will be!

Yellow Pages : I am collecting a list of characters and the jobs that they do.  I plan to compile all of these into one handy little reference guide.  Think of this as the Rhydin Yellow Pages.   Here is an example of a listing:
Rei:  Openly - student at Northedge Academy, studies drama, plays football, occasionally works at the Rambling Rose Tavern.
Covertly - pickpocket, con artist, and sneak thief
Please send all listings to
DarkAngelGenesis.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes I get the feeling that I should give everyone the chance to compile and write up an issue of Ubique's Weekly.  Just so that you all can see how detailed and complicated it really is.  Gen-Gen and Jess both got to experience the wonder of standing in as Editor In Chief for me during the past month.  If either of you would like to take a crack at it again in the future, just let me know.  AG knows how intense it all is as well.  Though, seriously, if any of you loyal readers out there think you have what it takes to put everything together and send it out in one immense publication, feel free to e-mail me with your request to stand in as EIC for a week.

By now all of you should know which updates should be sent to which co-editor.  There are links strewn about this week's issue.  I really don't feel like repeating myself this week.  However, I will say that you don't necessarily have to send your updates strictly to the person in charge of that section.  If you still feel the need to retain anonymity, feel free to send everything to me.  I don't mind taking the extra time copying and pasting things into a new e-mail and sending it along to the appropriate co-editor.  I just don't want to have to implant the missing pieces on my own.  So please be certain to send in all of your updates no later than Sunday evenings at midnight EST.  To whomever.

Hopefully none of you have simply skimmed over the pages this week.  There are some very new and exciting editorials in store for your reading pleasure.  We've finally started up our Dear Somebody section that we have been planning to impliment for months now, and I hope to see some progress in that area.

If any of you have any comments, questions, or concerns in regards to this publication, please do not hesitate in contacting me.  I always look forward to feedback from our readers, as do the other
Ink Wire Associates.  Don't be shy.  None of us bite.  Remember that what we are doing is for all of you.  The dream of cooperative freeform roleplaying would not exist without your support and dedication.  Tell us what you think.  And even with my doubts from time to time, it's pretty certain that I will continue to be...

Keeping you informed,
--
