Issue #69 ~ 25 January 2005

The Blurb

Greetings and salutations!  Well ... it turned out to be another one of those weeks.  One in which I neglected to send out a weekly reminder for deadlines on submissions.  It also seems to be a week in which nothing has gone precisely as I might have planned.  Ah well.  Life isn't perfect, and neither are we.  I only hope that this week's issue is as entertaining as the previous ones.  And as informative as well.  I really don't have a lot to say about this week's issue.  Most of it speaks for itself.  So let's get on with the news!

Top Story x 2!

For this week's issue, I had asked the SSE to run an article in the Top Story! section in regards to the Best of 2004 series.  Much to my dismay, it seems as if that query letter got lost in the mail.  However, I do not intend to wait any longer, as there is a deadline for this particular article.  Last year we ran for our subscribers a Best of 2003 contest (as seen in issue number 21).  This year it is our intention to do the same.

Nominations for the Best of 2004 are as follows (please copy and paste them into a new e-mail).  All submissions for the vote are to be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it by no later than this following Sunday (January 30, 2005).  All submissions for the vote will be tallied and included in the next issue of Ubique's Weekly, scheduled for release one week from today (February 1, 2005).  Please take a moment to review the categories and nominate whomever you think may be worthy of receiving the title of ...

The word from our sponsor is, "I'm excited and look forward to everyone's response!  I think I have a few on here that could be some heated battles. Hurry up, folks, and we'll have our results in next week's newsletter."  And we here at Ubique's Weekly couldn't agree more.  Get crackin' and send in those submissions.  Last year we had some rather riotous results.  For inspiration you can review those results in issue number 23 as archived on our website.

Please remember to send all of your ballots to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it no later than this following Sunday evening at midnight EST.  All votes will be tallied annonymously by our coordinating staff.  And if all works according to plan, the results will be in and printed in the next issue scheduled for release on the first of February.  So stay tuned!

From the Desk of DarkAngelGenesis
While wracking my brain for something to whip up as a quick top story with little inspiration and no submissions whatsoever, my mind took me back to a less than sterling moment in my life.  Since it has been said in the past that a "Top Story" could be an essay, that is what I am going to treat all of you to.  So, for lack of anything better to write I shall now share with all of you my story.  Without further ado, here it is.

Have you ever wondered about a lot of those people that spot UFOs and think that there has to be a logical explanation for what the people are seeing?  I have often wondered the same thing myself, especially since I saw my very own UFO.  I caught my glimpse of this mysterious night phenomena while walking along the beach at night with a friend.  Something mysterious started to loom silently overhead and glided spookily along the night sky.  It was rather eerie and it had a series of shimmering lights to it.  My friend and I stared in fascination at this thing and we both wondered aloud as to what it could be.  Just as we both were growing rather excited, thinking perhaps that there might be some truth out there that the X-Files would be proud of, I saw a bit of evidence that brought the both of us back to Earth real fast.  Yes indeed, in shimmering glowing letters was the word "Goodyear."  It turned out that my UFO was nothing more than the Goodyear blimp.  My friend and I felt a little let down, but we both got a good laugh out of it.

I often wonder if I would be telling a different story if I was intoxicated at the time, or simply was without my glasses.  Would I be roaming about trying to convince everyone that I saw a genuine UFO?  Probably.  It does make me wonder about all those other UFOs that people see.  Perhaps they too are seeing nothing more out of the ordinary than the Goodyear blimp.

Though late at night when I think about this that small child within often asks.  "What if it was a UFO after all and they cloaked their ship to make you just think it was a blimp?"  What if indeed.  I suppose the moral of this story, if there is even one is never forget how to ask yourself "what if."  It is what helps keep the magic alive within.  And that my friends is the end.

This Just In

No word from our CHE for this week's issue, so we're going to go ahead and reprint some of the things that were issued last week.  Some news just bears repeating as ongoing storylines continue.  Some of them are even cries for help in an effort to end storylines that have been going on for far too long.  Do you have anything new to tell our readers?  Has anything exciting been happening in story-land?  I'm sure you can all think of something, and if you do please send them all to DonatelIo Harada!  She's dying to share your news!

Case Closed? :  Anyone with information on various cases, including the murders of Aileen Hodgeson, Dorothy Peterson, Becky Johnson, Howard Conway, Patricia Miller, Stella Donaldson, and Paul and Mary Hanson is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter. Leave a message with the local PD, or a voice message at 940-555-7002.  Remember, your local authority needs your help to solve these cases.  You will not be asked to give your name or information about yourself.

Son of a Beach:  Rhydin Shore Patrol is still investigating a massacre at what appears to have been a luau.  Details on the shooting spree are being withheld by authorities.  A total of twenty-six people were shot to death with a variety of weapons.  Until further notice, a square mile of Rhydin's coast is closed to the public.

Sled Into Adventure:  The Kodiak Falls Office of Blackjack Adventures is open for business.  Think the season ended with the warm weather?  Wrong!  We have new and exciting adventures for you!  Contact Administrative Director of Operations Irina Braeden to schedule an adventure package with Chasz Havery, BJA's resident Mudbogger or Yvonne Rivard, BJA's resident Snowdog (See Classifieds for more details).

The Blackjack Family would like to extend our gratitude to those who made our inaugural season such a success.  As a token of our gratitude, winter clients will receive discounts on select spring packages.  It's just our way of thanking you for your loyalty.

Winter Plunderland:  The Winter Wonderland events at Dr. Maranya Valkonan's ranch have been canceled until further notice, due to unforeseen technical problems.  Those still wishing to contribute to programs at Riverview Clinic can contact Dr. Valkonan directly at the Clinic.

Words of Thanks:  Rhydin Family Charities would like to thank all those who made gifts of time and money during this holiday season and would like to foster the spirit of giving throughout the year. It's never too late to make contributions.

Competitors or Allies?:  A month ago the Editor In Chief received an e-mail from a reliable roleplaying resource concerning the creation of an alternative Rhy'Din newsletter.  In regards to the Red Dragon Inn Community, the speculative title of this newspaper is known as the Dragon's Breath.  As far as our sources are aware, this newspaper is still a project in the works.  We here at UW intend on giving our support to the cause and perhaps forming a future alliance should all work according to plan.  An organization known as Realm of Rhydin is behind the creation of this newspaper.  Though from what can be seen, most of this newspaper is web-based.  Players are encouraged to review the Dragon's Breath at their leisure, and perhaps offer up some assistance and support where needed.  So far things are looking up in regards to cooperative freeform roleplaying, collaboration, and keeping fellow players informed.

Dear Somebody:  For the past month now we have included a repeated Headline concerning the idea of dedicating a new section to the newsletter that covers a question and answer series.  Much like the Dear Abby seen in standard newspapers, we here at Ubique's Weekly are suggesting the implimentation of a similar editorial dedicated to characters.  Half of what we write is for the players, and the other half is for the characters.  So why not give our characters another way of expressing themselves in their world?  Recently the Editor In Chief submitted a query to one of our subscribers in hopes of adding a new name to the list of Ink Wire Associates.  Should this individual accept the job offer, we will be looking forward to including this new type of editorial in future issues.  More news on this as it comes in.

Mutual Endeavors on the Web:  With the appointment of the Ink Wire Associates, the Editor In Chief has been looking forward to improving the decor of the office located on the World Wide Web.  As of yet we have received no word from our official Newsletter Archive Editor concerning progress.  However, one fine day the EIC had been bored enough to work on the tedious task of archiving herself.  To date only past issues numbers 1 through 24 are archived on the website.  Less than half of the total published newsletters.  Please be patient during this process, and hopefully in the future there will be more listed in the archives for review.

Also in regards to Ubique's Weekly, the Editor In Chief has discussed the decor of the Mutual Endeavors homepage located at:  http://www.geocities.com/ehzoterik/ME.html.  Currently the page consists only of links of interest in regards to roleplaying.  After reviewing the RDI message boards, the EIC stumbled upon a thread of interest entitled "Sharing IC Illusion."  It was a brilliantly worded post that was begun by member LdyBelial.  The EIC sent a request to the writer of the post, requesting permission to use the work as a basis behind the meaning of Mutual Endeavors itself.  The writer, flattered, agreed to grant our request.  Keep your eyes peeled in the future for updates concerning the website and its structure.  It is our intention and hope to present the best of roleplaying related activity there is to offer.

In Other News...

The good news is that people are playing!  The bad news is that we're not seeing very many new names on our lists.  We haven't seen very many new names for the past several months.  With near to fifty names on the mailing list, one would hope to receive so much more!  As it is, here is what's been going on in our characters' worlds for the past week.

Abdullah Jallaludin (Moonsmote)Has finally discovered why he is where he is.  There are many places where people live perfectly normal lives, but as a seafarer Jallal has come across many tribes who suffer under the tyranny of demonic false-gods.  War rages against the Sabeans in the East, the Dracule in the North, Cannibals in the South, and Franks in the West, and Jallal didn't know which war to join.  But the old man Ayub has shown him the way.  There are conflicts right here, where the sword of a Mujahid could make more of a difference.

Alexander Camael Woods (Terra Nephilim):  Due to certain outside influences, he's actually agreed to go on a date.  His studies are going quite well, perhaps to the consternation of his mother.

Alexander Camael Woods (Emerald Mirror) Life has been relatively sedate for the younger twin. Studying, people-watching...trying to set up his brother on a date or two. Who could ask for anything more?

Anna (AriannaRavenwood)The blue sister continues to stay out of the public eye.

Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana)The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands.   Ariana made two relatively brief appearances at the Silver Moon Inn this past week, but otherwise she continues to stay out of the public eye, save to work at her Bakery as usual.

Aya Aillister (Destiny of Music):  Aya is thrilled to be going to Northedge, though she hopes that she can still get in at this late date.

Ayub bin Sulayman (Moonsmote):   Ayub hasn't seen much action this week, perhaps because he is a new arrival.  And maybe being seventy years old has something to do with it as well. He is a Marabout, a learned Warrior-scholar from West-Africa. What he is doing in the Rambling Rose is something of a mystery.

Carmine (TaciturnMerc)Recently Dris found a note from their houseguest Shadi that detailed his desire to have a guardian.  He also has received word that Drake and Rose Valkonan would be quite happy to take the lad in themselves.  He plans on talking to the boy soon, but so far they have been like ships in the night and passing each other by.

Carolyn Valkonan (DreamsInBurgundy):   Carolyn had an interesting run-in with Shadi this week, which seems to have resulted in both he and Aya going to Northedge (Something she can't complain about), and getting Shadi as another housemate. Luckily for her the Lab is so big!  Life is just going to be very strange for a while...as if it hasn't already been.  At least her journal turned up. Apparently it'd been kicked under her dresser.  It could've just been a certain pseudodragon up to tricks. Who knows?

Deputy Marshall Wynter (Rachael Wynter)The scarred law woman in black continues to work on wrapping up certain investigations (see Headlines).  Rachael received information about a recent series of ritualistic murders from an anonymous informant and still investigates this lead.  She still works closely with Doctor Nigel Newborn from RCSI on this case.  Her ongoing investigations continue to keep the Deputy Marshall out of the public eye.

Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan (
Maranya Valkonan):  She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn.  The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic.  Maranya is very pleased with Jack's ongoing efforts to repair the damages to her ranch's landscaping from the invading zombies, said damages forcing a temporary cancellation of the Winter Wonderland fundraising events there.  The good Doctor made a public appearance at the Rambling Rose Tavern and the Silver Moon Inn, but has since stuck to dealing with her patients at Riverview Clinic and making things comfortable for her new Siamese kitten, Zorro, at her ranch.

Drake Valkonan (
Drake Valkonan):   Drake made a rare public appearence, and found himself agreeing to be a guardian to kids!  He's happy as can be as a family man, it seems.

Dris (BardGaIIant)Just when his surge of youth kicked in, life started going crazy again.  Earlier this week he found a note from Shadi that addressed the boy's concerns about wanting to go to Northedge.  Dris and Carmine had been talking about the request to be the boy's parental guardians for quite some time.  Luckily for both of them, Drake and Rose Valkonan took up the task themselves.  The last thing Dris needs is another child to raise!  Or not raise, as most cases seem to be.  With Carmine having taken up his sword again, Dris has seen less and less of the mercenary than perhaps he or anyone else would prefer.  He ran into a friend named Vee at the Red Dragon Inn earlier this week.  Vee asked him to promise to make more appearances at the Rambling Rose Tavern.  With his busy schedule, he's going to try his best!  But so far he feels he hasn't kept true to such a promise.

On another occassion, he has had the chance to spy a rather familiar looking young man.  Once at the Red Dragon Inn and once at the Rambling Rose Tavern.  Now if only he could remember the man's name!  Perhaps in due time he will.  Hopefully they'll have the chance to talk some time soon so that he can work out this problem of, "I know you, but not your name.  How do I know you?"  At least he isn't having trouble remembering those close by.  Such as Shadi, who he just so happened to have a rather pleasant conversation with one night at the Red Dragon Inn.  It had occurred to him that eventually he would have to tell Shadi why he was so reluctant to adopt him, but thanks to the Valkonans the day is saved!

Ehzoterik VonArcanum Tempestas (Ehzoterik)Believe it or not, Ehz actually made an appearance earlier this week.  She has been so reclusive lately, that perhaps it was only a matter of time.  As luck would have it, she dropped in on the Red Dragon Inn one evening to say hello to some of the locals she knows.  They all seemed very pleased to see her, and that made Ehz happy.  But she couldn't stay long, despite the fact that she wanted to see if she could help a man in teddy bear skin.  Clothing?  Skin?  Well he sure as heck looked like a teddy bear to Ehz!  The night went on well enough without her breaking anything.  Rhy'Din can breathe easy.

Elaine (Elaine Aqua):  No solo exploring jaunts for Elaine at all.  She's enjoying the winter weather and having fun engaging in snowball fights with her cousins and family, as well as returning to her studies at Northedge Academy.  The eleven year old's also been helping her Ma, Aunty Allison and Melly (Ariana MacGyldren, Allison Reynor and Melanie Wyndham) with the baking at her Ma's Bakery.  Elaine still misses Beauty but is consoled by taking care of the rest of Empress Emerald of Grayfur's kittens, though she's still grumpy that she's not allowed to name the kittens.   Elaine really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.

Emmy
(
Empress Grayfur) If she wasn't so gosh-darned comfortable, she'd be out there searching for a home for her three remaining kittens. Elaine makes such a good babysitter!

Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random):  Still hibernating.

Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden):   In this week's installment, the only news of note for this native Rhydin resident was that she was spotted at the Rambling Rose Tavern and the Silver Moon Inn again this past week.  Issue #29 of Bright Suns has also been spotted on the racks at Comic Masters in town.  Stay tuned.

Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue):  Finally!  The latest issue of his favorite comic is on sale.  Of course he was one of the first to purchase it.  As well as the slew of action figures on the market lately.  Aside from his usual work reparing the Ranch, he hasn't been doing much else.  Busy bunny.

Jade (Irreverent Jade) The reclusive Earth Master's idyllic and quiet life has been jarred a bit by the knowledge that one of her sons is practicing dark Earth Magic.  She's unsure as to how, exactly, to deal with the news--but it will be dealt with.

Joker (SMI Joker, Richard D Harker):  The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn tended his usual shift this week.   Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker).  The eldest Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan).   Joker enjoys trying out the present Rhi (Rhiannon D Brock) got him on some of the winding roads around Rhydin.  He also gave a rather sparkly present to Rhi the other day.

Jules (Jules Braeden)Jules has been taking it easy this week.  She figures that things will pick up again soon and once more she will find herself insanely busy.  Until then, she will enjoy the quiet for as long as she can.

Kakabel (Celestial Sorrow):  Nothing new to report.  Believe it or not he is trusting his son to handle his own adventures on his own time.  However, Rei will have a LOT of make-up work to do when he gets back.  The Prince of Stars intends on making certain Rei accomplishes this task.  Education is very important afterall.

Leon Southfield (Leon Southfield):  Leon's hyper even for him.  He's been zipping around campus like a ferret on Pixie Stix.

Lyssa (Lyssa Bjornson)Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason.

Melly (Melanie Wyndham):   The shy relief baker is still relaxing from the holiday bustle at Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery.  Will she tend bar at the Silver Moon Inn again?  The world may never know.

Mer Harriss (Heavy Metal Mer):  At the moment, the Virtual Adept is more worried about her daughter and not much else, after Angelin ran off before her shift at the Rose was over last week.  Rumors of a raise from Coruscant are so far unfounded.

Micarryl
(Still More Drow):   Mica zhah wun Anzzar.  Ji feir ol zhah ves, ves b'vecko.  L' mzilst myar aglust uriu tlus natha bista harventh areion Uoi'nota.

Mithril (ASaintOfSinners):  Aside from paying a visit both to Hell and to the celestial court of Yu-Shan, very little is known of his current activities this week.

Morgan Knight (Morgan Rampage)In truly frightening news, Morgan is learning to cook.

Orion Ksyhsravor (
Orion Ksyhsravor):  Orion is very happy with life, and is striving to be worthy of an honor bestowed upon him.

Parhi Grimjaws (The Multifarious):  Due to her newly awakened Red (Fire) Dragon ancestry, Parhi has been suffering tremendously from the recent low temperatures, and has declared that she is going to give Shiver a hotfoot on each of his paws and his tail, too.

Pleione (Stellar Balinese):  Is it a good sign or a bad sign that she has been increasingly sparse lately?  For the past couple of weeks she hasn't been spotted on the house grounds at all.  Oh where oh where could the Balinese be?

Rei (AmethystStarfall)Rei is still away on his adventure.  Happily he found his journal and has once more resumed writing in it when he can.  It turns out that it was hidden in the lining of his pack.  He does wonder how it got there, but is not going to complain much.

Rose Valkonan (Electrum Rose):  Along with her illustrious husband Drake, Rose has become the guardian of a certain strange little fellow named Shadi. Maybe they can be friends? That is, if she and her husband can ever catch up with the boy. She's thinking a visit to Dris and Carmine's is in order...

Salvador (Peculiar Silence):  On top of school work and other lessons he indulges in during his own free time, Sal has been very busy.  Despite this, he has found a few opportunities to go out and prowl the city streets.  He was a little baffled to discover that his journal had somehow managed to slide under the dresser.  He doesn't remember hiding it there, but at least he has an outlet again.  Seems he's been catching up with old friends.  It was refreshing to run into Irina again and see that she is feeling much better.  Apart from that, he got to punch a shapeshifting dog-man in the face for causing a ruckus.  That felt good.

Earlier in the week he spent an evening at the Rambling Rose Tavern in the company of good friends (Carolyn, Shadi, and Aya).  Most of the discussion involved schooling at Northedge and Shadi's determination to go.  Carolyn must've suspected Carmine and Dris' reluctance, because it seems as if she convinced her parents to adopt the boy.  Good.  The less stress, the better.  On everybody's part.  Hopefully Shadi will get his guardianship, get accepted into Northedge, and be happy with schooling.  Sal personally doesn't see what the big thrill of it is, but ... whatever.

Shadi  (Shadibadoo)   Shadi happened upon Carolyn one evening, and her parents may send him and Aya to school after all.  Unease about his social standing lingers however.  Sure, he's been rescued by Carolyn's altruistic parents, but that doesn't change the fact that nobody else wanted to be his guardian.  And now that school is arranged, that leaves his unoccupied mind  to dwell on his loneliness.  Shadi has learned that it's hard to completely give up on somebody, but the finality of his rejection has finally sunk in. Feelings of unfairness and injustice have burned the crush out of him.   Sal is off the hook, but there are some very pretty girls in Rhydin.

Shiver the White  (The Multifarious)The little dragon has been spending a few hours every evening singing cold into the thermals descending into Rhydin from the mountians.  He intends it to be a kind of present for everyone who was hoping for some freezing temperatures, as he feels every sensible person should.  As a result, some of the more warm-blooded types who know what he's up to are starting to think about hiring dragonslayers for a little trip into the mountains...

Stephen Valkonan
(
Stephen Valkonan):  As if he didn't have enough stress on his plate, suddenly his girlfriend's family is being torn apart.  At least his family isn't any more insane than it normally is...

Terrance Tomar-Duncan (
Terrance Tomar):   Terry is still away with Mithril and some others, in not-fun places.

Valanthe Air'loki (Valanthe Airloki): She's been rather busy in her homeland, but found enough time to regain a semblance of sanity and make visit to her family and friends in Rhydin.  And agree to a date, when her duties at home allow her to return!

Yoshi (KitsuneNineTails):   Yoshi has returned home, and brought a few guests along with him to experience the wonders of the land of his birth.  As it turns out this zany mischief spirit is from a surprisingly lawful place.  Who knew?

Zetarris (Zetarris)What could be more fun than a wacky adventure in Lawful Land, a.k.a. Yu-Shan, with his prissy buddy Mithril, Mith's too-serious main squeeze, a stuffy unfriendly elf, and that goofy kitsune Yoshi?  Not much, besides maybe bathing cats or poking badgers with feather dusters.
