Ubique's Weekly

A Mutual Endeavors Publication

Issue #67 ~ 11 January 2005

The Blurb

Greetings and salutations once again, loyal readers!  The new year has started off so far with great success.  Resolutions are being made, but we here at Ubique's Weekly intend on keeping true to ours.  Change is always in the air.  This issue will be highlighting things that have transpired in the past week of roleplaying as it always has.  But we will also be discussing some things that have yet to pass.  So keep your eyes peeled and be attentive.  You never know just what we're going to throw out at you in these pages.

First and foremost, I would like to take a moment to reflect.  Exactly one year ago today (almost), the number of our subscribers only totaled a number of twenty-two.  To date, over the past year, we have more than doubled that number with nearly fifty screen names receiving this weekly publication.  That isn't to say that all of them are individual players, as some may very well be duplicates for alternate screen names for all I know.  Still ... fifty is a formidable number.  This year's goal is to double that number yet again.  Wouldn't it be amazing to have a grand total of one hundred subscribers?

With that in mind, I would like to take this moment to present a challenge to each and every one of you.  Periodically I have a habit of tossing out this challenge, and I just love to see how far it goes.  So with the start of the new year, I would like to challenge each and every one of you to take a moment and reflect.  Think of all the players you know.  Look at your buddy lists.  Surely you all know at least one other player who may benefit from the enjoyment of receiving Ubique's Weekly as you do.  If you can think of at least one person, do not hesitate to forward him or her a copy of our publication and urge that person to subscribe.

If there is any one thing I look forward to every week, it is compiling Ubique's Weekly.  With your continued support, I believe that we could be so much more.  So help me to help you keep the dream of cooperative freeform roleplaying alive.  For roleplaying is a Mutual Endeavor.  Knowledge, and the sharing thereof, is what helps us to survive.  That is what this publication is all about.  Now enough of my yammering.  Let's get on with the news!

Top Story!

In our last issue I mentioned the intense collaboration that we ran last year known as the Best Of series.  It is my intention to continue this as a tradition for Ubique's Weekly in the many years to come.  With our hard work and dedication to the dream of freeform cooperative roleplaying, I feel that Ubique's Weekly will still be around for a long time coming.  Therefore I would like to direct your attention to Ubique's Weekly issue number twenty-one, archived for your convenience on the UW homepage (http://www.geocities.com/ehzoterik/UW/issue21.html).  In that issue, almost exactly one year ago today, we presented you with a poll known as the Best of 2003.  It is the intention of the editorial staff to run a new ballot for the Best of 2004.

Ink Wire Associates DarkAngelGenesis and DonatelIo Harada, will be working together this year to compile a ballot and present it as an editorial in a future issue of Ubique's Weekly.  This is an intense project that will require the cooperation of all our subscribers, readers, and interested roleplayers.  When everything is all said and done, I would also like to present the poll and results on the Red Dragon Inn PaP boards.  But for now, subscribers get the first chance to share their thoughts on the matter.  Therefore, we are opening up a Suggestion Box to each and every one of you.  What sort of questions would you like to see on the ballot this year?  Do you have any ideas for a Best Of this time around?  Your thoughts and opinions are always welcome, and for the effort they are also valued.  So send in your suggestions to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and tell us what you think.

Storyline Spotlights

Zombie Attack!
Several patrons of the Rambling Rose Tavern had a very bad week indeed as they all got to deal with an outbreak of a virus taken straight from the pages of someone's worst nightmare.  The nature of this virus mutated those infected with it, and transformed them into something very much like a zombie out of an old horror movie.  This virus spread like wildfire and people found themselves trapped, the phones went out, and chaos ensued as more and more people became infected.  Fortunately, a cure to this virus was found and people were treated before the whole city became infected.  Now people are having to deal with a lot of property damage, as well as the psychological factors of living a week of pure hell.  Recovery shall be a slow process, but rest assured that life does indeed go on for the citizens of Rhydin.

The Hmte Strike Again
A shipment of exotic meats from other worlds that recently landed at the space-port of High-town was destroyed early last week.  The wreckage remaining on the landing pad included no animal protein of any kind, including the crew members who had been present.  The pad itself had been undermined, and will be unavailable for use until repaired.  The only security camera in use at the time captured one image - a kind of reddish blur flickering around the distressed ship, concurrent with the sound of the screaming of the crew.

Scans by law enforcement officials revealed large concentrations of insect pheromones, consistent with the activity of the colony of giant ants known as Hmte.  We shall bring you more information on this story as it unfolds.

Note from the EIC:  Just what is a Storyline Spotlight?  Some of you may be wondering that.  For I have the sneaking suspicion that some of you are a little timid when it comes to submitting.  In the past, I have always compiled a Spotlight out of the various individual updates that I received from our subscribers.  A storyline itself is usually a collaboration of roleplay performed by two or more people.  Therefore, in all honesty, a Spotlight is a news bulletin that details just such a thing.  There are great stories going on out there.  Many roleplayers work together to create fantastic battle sequences and other such things.  Some of you may even be looking to recruit people to join in on the fun!  If that is the case, there is no finer way to broadcast your invitations than by presenting it here as a Storyline Spotlight!  Don't be afraid to share.  You'll never know how many new friends and comrades you'll meet by informing the masses of something as interesting as those things mentioned above.  And on that note, here's something I neglected to forward to our SSE:

Fifth Annual Rhy'Din Winter Fest
Resident Rhy'Dinnians ... Dechirant, Fayalki, and Woody Sprite will be hosting the 5th Annual Winter Fest later this week in Woody's Grove.  Woody's Grove is located some 8 miles west-north-west of Rhy'Din town, in an oak grove.  It's not an old growth Forest, but rather a new forest.  Some years back this area had been logged; Woody has come in and planted a lot of new trees.  Most trees are about 20 years old, however there are a few very old trees about.

In the center of the woods is a ring of standing stones.  Not the pretty shaped stones like Stone Henge, but large enlongated stones placed so they reach for the sky.  There is also a large pond, frozen over so  ice skating is possible.  The Grove also sports a very large and steep hill, so snowboarding is also possible. Many magical creatures make this area their home, the more violent and flesh-eating kind are penned up.  Woody has also made an ice sculpture in the center of the pond.  It is an eight-foot sculpture of a duck!  Hey, go figure!

There will be ice-skating, snowboarding and various other winter sports for the enjoyment of the participants.  Skates, skis and snowboards will be furnished for those who do not bring their own.  There will be a buffet for those who are hungry, and drinks for the thirsty.  This event is scheduled to take place on Saturday (January 15, 2005).  For full details and location, please contact Fayalki if you are interested in joining in on the festivities.

This Just In

Frustrated in Rhydin: CHE.  Wanted Single Good stories.  Smokers okay, artificial limbs welcome. Please send synopsis, no fakers, please.

Basically, I got nothing this week.  Anyone out there?

Headlines

Bloody Beach:  Rhydin Shore Patrol is still investigating a massacre at what appears to have been a luau.  Details on the shooting spree are being withheld by authorities.  A total of twenty-six people were shot to death with a variety of weapons.  Until further notice, a square mile of Rhydin's coast is closed to the public.

Dear Abby?:  Throughout all the discussion on an IC newspaper on the PaP boards, there is one in particular that has captured the Editor In Chief of Ubique's Weekly's attention.  A question presented by UW subscriber AKrugerAllen:  "Are you planning a Dear Deb section?"  With this inquiry, the member also submitted a sample question for what could potentially be a humorous addition to the pages of Ubique's Weekly.  The Editor in Chief's response was that should Deb subscribe to UW, she would be more than happy to invite her to handle just such a section.  The question is ... what do our readers think?  Should we include a Dear Deb section in our newsletter?  At least a Dear Somebody?  For more inspiration, please review the PaP boards which are linked to in our Advertisements sections.

Red Dragon News:  Word has it from our official sources that the battle for control of the RDI still wages on.  In addition to the reinstatement of the official room HOSTs, there are some other faithful members who we should take a moment to recognize.  Not everyone has the liberty to wear the official uniform and badge, but there are still some out there who insist on fighting the good fight of keeping the Red Dragon Inn's spirit alive and well as it has always been.  So keep an eye out for those people wearing the support RDI badge.  Our sources claim that an official list will be posted on the website once everyone is accounted for.  Bear in mind that these individuals struggle hard to present themselves as admirable pillars of the community.  Award them as much respect as you would any official HOST.  Many are still dedicated to the cause and refuse to give up just yet.  Many changes are in the air concerning the RDI Community.  We can only hope that the crusade succeeds in its goal.  UW gives its support in honoring those men and women who have stepped up to the task of guiding and instructing.  Perhaps there's still some hope for us left.

Rhy'Din Yellow Pages:
Through discussion amongst players about the terrible confusion that transpires concerning precisely what it is that each individual character in Rhy'Din does to pay the bills, a great idea has been born.  I felt it would be beneficial to not only display this idea as a UW Advertisement, but also as a Headline.  The details as to why this idea came into focus can be reviewd on The Circle (the specific post has been provided via hyperlink).  In brief, the question arises, "Who can my character turn to when a certain job needs done?"  Many of us have taken great care and have spent many hours devising backgrounds and occupations for our characters.  With this in mind, it would only seem logical (and also cordial) to conclude that if your character needed a specific something done that he or she would turn to another player's character who can do just that.  To not would be foolish and at times possibly even bigoted.

Therefore, Mutual Endeavors member and fellow storyline collaborator
DarkAngelGenesis has taken it upon herself to collect as much information as humanly possible from all of you players in an effort to create Rhy'Din's very own Yellow Pages.  Take a moment of your time one of these days and think about what it is your characters do for a living.  What are their occupations?  How do they make their money?  Would other characters come to them in order to make use of their services?  An example listing would be:

Rei:  Openly - student at Northedge Academy, studies drama, plays football, occasionally works at the Rambling Rose Tavern.
Covertly - pickpocket, con artist, and sneak thief.

Use your imaginations and help us to help you by providing all the details that you feel are necessary.  In a future issue of Ubique's Weekly, I will be highlighting as much as I can.  Perhaps we can even add this into a section of the Mutual Endeavors website.  Please send all information to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for these purposes.  More information on this as it comes in.

Rogues of Rhy'Din:  Months ago it was brought to my attention that a new type of storyline is being built.  In some respects it could be considered a guild, but no.  While it is centered around a select choice few of character candidates, it is not necessarily guild revival in roleplaying.  A great number of characters fall under the category of rogue, and it is plausible to conclude that there would indeed be a Thieves' Guild in the area.  Though do not confuse it with the old version of guilds that use to overpopulate the RP scene.  This is in fact a group storyline, a collaboration in the works.  For more information, please visit the website at: http://www.thievesden.ashadowofme.com/  Their numbers are slowly growing, at least so far as identified rogues are concerned.  Perhaps your character can find a place to fit in amongst the underground movement as well!

Sled Into Adventure:  The Kodiak Falls Office of Blackjack Adventures is open for business.  Think the season ended with the warm weather?  Wrong!  We have new and exciting adventures for you!  Contact Administrative Director of Operations Irina Braeden to schedule an adventure package with Chasz Havery, BJA's resident Mudbogger or Yvonne Rivard, BJA's resident Snowdog (See Classifieds for more details).

The Blackjack Family would like to extend our gratitude to those who made our inaugural season such a success.  As a token of our gratitude, winter clients will receive discounts on select spring packages.  It's just our way of thanking you for your loyalty.

Still On The Crime Beat:  Anyone with information on various cases, including the murders of Aileen Hodgeson, Dorothy Peterson, Becky Johnson, Howard Conway, Patricia Miller, Stella Donaldson, and Paul and Mary Hanson is strongly urged to contact Deputy Marshall Wynter. Leave a message with the local PD, or a voice message at 940-555-7002.  Remember, your local authority needs your help to solve these cases.  You will not be asked to give your name or information about yourself.

Wardens of Loreil:  A name that perhaps many of you have not heard in a good long time.  Our sources maintain the truth that the Wardens of Loreil do indeed still exist.  News concerning the organization has spread to us in the manner that Captain M. P. Damascus has officially stepped down from the organization and entered into retirement.  The Captain's official retirement was effective January 1st of this year.  Stepping up in the ranks to take his place is Luciferal Satonica (Warden Satonica).  More on this story as it comes to us.

Winter Plunderland:
The Winter Wonderland events at Dr. Maranya Valkonan's ranch have been canceled until further notice, due to unforeseen technical problems.  Those still wishing to contribute to programs at Riverview Clinic can contact Dr. Valkonan directly at the Clinic.

Words of Thanks:  Rhydin Family Charities would like to thank all those who made gifts of time and money during this holiday season and would like to foster the spirit of giving throughout the year.

In Other News...

Even with the changes in the air, some things still remain true.  This section of the newsletter continues to be the most immense that we present.  So without any elaborate fanfare, I give to you this past week's individual Character Updates...

Ahriman (TheAngraMaiynu):   For once there is a virus out there that he is not responsible for.  He had nothing to do with the recent zombie attack, however it is a good idea.  Something worthy of consideration.  Perhaps.  It did not work the last time...

Anna (AriannaRavenwood) The blue sister has gone back to staying out of the public eye.

Ariana (ArianaMacGyldren, SMI Ariana)The green sister, along with her husband Galen (Galen MacGyldren) and daughter Elaine (Elaine Aqua), still resides at her husband and brother in law's clan lands.   Ariana has pretty much stayed out of the public eye, save to work at her Bakery as usual.

Aya Aillister (Destiny of Music):  Aya is very happy, although Salvador (Peculiar Silence) has thorougly confused her. She's heard about a bard local to the area, and is very interested in tracking the man down.

Carolyn Valkonan (
DreamsInBurgundy): Her best friend's confused by Salvador--it's Shadi who has Carolyn's mind in knots. She doesn't claim to understand him, but there are times where the daydreaming empath certainly wishes she could! Worse, her hormones are in full swing and she's faced with certain difficult choices, regarding certain gifts of hers.

Cassandra Tyra (
Against Descent): The Hieracthon is newly busy in an attempt to save the Incarna, and thus trying to find "Seals". What that means is anyone's guess.  Her attempts are hindered by keeping her new grey kitten out of his namesake--Trouble.

Deputy Marshall Wynter (Rachael Wynter):  The scarred law woman in black continues to work on wrapping up certain investigations (see Headlines).  Rachael received information about a recent series of ritualistic murders from an anonymous informant and still investigates this lead.  She is still working closely with Doctor Nigel Newborn from RCSI on this case.  Her ongoing investigations continue to keep the Deputy Marshall out of the public eye.

Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan
(
Maranya Valkonan):   She's tending to her patients as usual, including one of the tenders at the Silver Moon Inn.  The good Doctor continues to spend time volunteering her medical services at a local free clinic.  Maranya is very pleased with Jack's efforts to repair the damages to her ranch's landscaping from the invading zombies, said damages forcing a temporary cancellation of the Winter Wonderland fundraising events there.  After the matter with the zombies was dealt with, the good Doctor made a relatively brief public appearance at the Rambling Rose Tavern, but has since stuck to dealing with her patients at Riverview Clinic and making things comfortable for her new Siamese kitten, Zorro, at her ranch.

Elaine (
Elaine Aqua)No solo exploring jaunts for Elaine at all.  She's enjoying the winter weather and having fun engaging in snowball fights with her cousins and family, as well as returning to her studies at Northedge Academy.  The eleven year old's also been helping her Ma, Aunty Allison and Melly (Ariana MacGyldren, Allison Reynor and Melanie Wyndham) with the baking at her Ma's Bakery.  Elaine still misses Beauty but is consoled by taking care of the rest of Empress Emerald of Grayfur's kittens, though she's still grumpy that she's not allowed to name the kittens.   Elaine really misses her brother Banshee (Banshee Aqua) and really truly doesn't believe he's truly gone.

Emmy (Empress Grayfur) She's bound and determined to find three good people to take care of her three remaining kittens.  They don't seem to be in any real big hurry, having far too much fun chasing Elaine's ankles around the house, but it's way past time.  Perhaps another family outing is in order in the near future...

Faladar (Afreet Master): Faladar's life has slowed down since he's become a Rambling Rose regular.  There just arn't too many opportunities for righteous purges anymore. At least, that's what he thought until he viewed a touching expose about Siberian caretakers embezzling food and leaving the mentally handicapped children of their orphanage to scavenge like animals.  Equipped with all the information he felt was necissary, Faladar has arranged for teleportation to the Siberian Tundra, where he plans to execute overweight caretakers.

Faye: She Who Tends the Dead (Faye Random):  Still hibernating.

Irina Braeden (Irina Braeden):  In this week's installment, there's still been no news of note or actual sign of this native Rhydin resident around anywhere for months now.  However, Issue #29 of Bright Suns has been spotted on the racks at Comic Masters in town.  Stay tuned.

Jack Bishop (Jackrabbit Blue)Even during his busy schedule repairing the damage done to 'Anya's Ranch, Jack still finds the time to appreciate the better things in life.  Such as comic books.  Issue #29 of Bright Suns!?  Woo hoo!

Joker (SMI Joker, Richard D Harker):   The flirtatious bartender for the Silver Moon Inn tended his usual shift this week.   Joker is still worried about his younger brother Nige (Peter N Harker).  The eldest Harker brother is currently undergoing anger management counseling along with his usual medical treatments from the Valkyrie (Maranya Valkonan).   Joker's enjoyed trying out the present Rhi got him on some of the winding roads around Rhydin.

Kakabel (Celestial Sorrow):  The Prince of Stars remains in good spirits.  It is rumored that he is planning on celebrating his son's honorable scholastic achievements.  But how?

Leon Southfield (Leon Southfield):  Leon is becoming a little more scarce lately, generally trying to act casual and failing.  Whatever secret he's hiding is becoming Northedge gossip just because of how badly he's hiding the fact that he has a secret in the first place!

Lyssa (Lyssa Bjornson):   Ariana's shy dollmaking daughter continues to make dolls based on dreams she's been having for a still undetermined reason.

Melly (Melanie Wyndham/SMI Sweetie):  The shy relief baker is still relaxing from the holiday bustle at Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery.  Will she tend bar at the Silver Moon Inn again?  The world may never know.

Mer Harriss (Heavy Metal Mer)Her lips are still sealed. And most uncomfortably, certain touchy topics are still being brought up by local busybodies. What's a girl to do?

Micarryl
(Still More Drow): Ol uriu tlus natha bein blyntangi. Mica tha l' sel mrannd'ssinss d' Euol, natha renor d'aron. Uk zhah naut verin ji Mica orn naut inbal ulu olis'inth qua'laen ukta. Nin gaer zhah natha groova ulu orior whol lu' l' m'thain orn tlu alus whol biu noamuth in'tuil d' draeval.

Mithril
(
ASaintOfSinners):  Mithril is rather grateful that work pulled him out of Rhydin in time to miss what sounds like a zombie attack.  He does not have patience to deal with such things.  He would far rather contribute a little coin to the reconstruction effort, which is what he has chosen to do.

Morgan Knight (Morgan Rampage):  Morgan is running high on life after helping to thwart the zombie invasion.

Orion Ksyhsravor (
Orion Ksyhsravor):  The Jedi seems happy, although prone to occasional fits of melancholy lately.

Rei (
AmethystStarfall)Adventures seem to be happening all across the land.  Some people got to deal with zombies.  Others are dealing with evil men that live in evil houses.  He has his own adventure to participate in, but is being quite close mouthed about the details.  He merely informed his mother that he will be leaving town for a little while, and right in the middle of school!  What could this kid be thinking?  Where is he going?  Will he be back in time to avoid expulsion?  Whatever it is that he is doing, it must be important.

In other news, Rei has found that his mother has a new love interest.  Unlike most of her previous love interests, this one proves to be a man that he can actually stand.  Perhaps even grow to like if things work out well.  Now he just has to convince Pleione to cut the man a little slack.

Salvador (Peculiar Silence)When everything's been all said and done, Sal has decided that he needs a vacation.  There's a perturbing silence in the air that has had him on edge ever since the start of winter.  Something just isn't right, and he can't quite put his finger on it.  Maybe it's just puberty, but his mood has been more unpredictable lately than usual.  The most perturbing fact of all being that he can't seem to remember things that happened before he moved to Rhy'Din with his father.  The past thirteen years of his life just isn't something he should forget!  Pile that on top of still trying to figure out how to deal with Shadi, and his mind is a mess of confusion.  Hopefully the professors at Northedge give him loads of homework!  That way he won't have to think of so much so often.

Shadi  (Shadibadoo):   Shadi hasn't been doing very well recently.  Avoiding conflict is in his nature, so his first instinct is to slink away and let things cool down. Unfortunately, he's been rather meek as a result. The other night changed all of that, with Shadi's jarring epiphany.  Apparently, nobody appreciates the nice guy.  A few friends stopped his new dog-eat-dog mentality in its tracks with some pretty lengthy lecturing, but its slowly growing within him nonetheless.  Not a happy hippy.

Shiver the White (The Multifarious):  The little white dragon has been spotted playing with thermals in the mountains again.  Who knows what this is going to do to the weather forecast.

Terrance Tomar-Duncan (Terrance Tomar):  Professor TD may not be around for the beginning of the new semester at Northedge--it's looking like they'll need a substitute for a while, as he is about to leave on an urgent errand of unknown duration. He has already arranged for a sitter to take care of his cats; the newer one Tee is one of the Wylie's "incest kittens" and is already being spoiled rotten despite being renamed "Rank" by mean old Mithril. There's been some hissing in the household, and some of it even from the felines.

Twelve (The Multifarious): The big troll-blood has recently been holed up in his room, recuperating from his experiences in the techno-dead zone.  When he stops gibbering about the rise and fall of this and that empire and detergents with outdoor fresh scents, he should be back in circulation.

Zetarris (Zetarris)Plans for the giraffe ranch are on hold while Jim prepares to go on a trip. He visited the Rambling Rose recently to pick up his passport from a relative, and left Lego men behind. Soon his army of Lego men will activate and take over Rhydin, AAH HA HA HAA!

Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery For those of you who remember the good old days of AOL's message boards, we would like to remind one and all that nothing is ever completely lost in this day and age.  Perhaps one way that we can all achieve our goals of keeping our storylines on the same track is to make use of this forgotten treasure.  Therefore, it is our great pleasure to direct everyone's attention to the existence of Ariana's Divine Delights Bakery.  With the creator's permission, we are welcoming one and all to read, write, and enjoy the glory that is storytelling through the use of message boards.  Keep those creative juices flowing!
