Vance was born on January 9, 2924. He was the only child of two Free-Born army pilots. His mother Sarah, was the pilot of the troop transport Excelsior. His Father, Mark, was the pilot of one of several drop ships aboard the Excelsior.
He was orphaned at the age of six, when both his parents were tragicly killed during a mission to free one of the many colony worlds.
Raised as an outsider in a colony orphanage, he grew to rely on himself. Distant at times, he never made friends easily.
On his sixteenth birthday, he enlisted in the Army. His recklessness and daring quickly grew legendary, as did the number of kills he obtained. Unfortunately, so did the number of friendly casualties in any unit he was assigned to.
Upon gaining his own command, while he was not reckless with the lives of the men under him, he continued to place himself in unnecessary danger. Several good men lost their lives saving their commander. While he never failed to reach an objective, on several occasions, his mech was the only one to be recovered. It was during this time that he earned the call sign "Crippler", for his uncanny nact for disableing an enemy mech, while leaving most of the equipment in salvagable condition.
Unknown to his own superiors, or the countless Psychiatrists he was required to see after each mission with high casualties, after he disabled an enemy, he would place his own mech upon the cockpit of the enemy. His own 40-90 ton walking death machine would stand, and slowly crush the cockpit, and the enemy pilot inside.
After making a name for himself on several colony worlds, he was assigned to the 103rd mech devision, a part of the E.L.F.(Earth Liberation Force). He preformed admirably in several conflicts ranging across North America and was awarded the Saint's Star on two seperate occasions for courage under fire.
While on patroll of a captured enemy base, he was ambushed by three larger, more powerful mechs and nearly fatally wounded. The Doctors had to replace both his left arm and leg with cybernetic limbs. Due to his injuries, his status as Mech Pilot was removed, and he was placed in command of a small G.H.O.S.T.(Ground-based Heavy Ordanance SupporT) unit. He completed his tour of duty, and was scheduled to be shipped off world to aid in the liberation of another colony.
He never made it to the spaceport. While en-route, while traveling through a tunnel in the Appalachian mountains his instruments went haywaire, and then all electronics went dead. When he finally got the system re-booted, he was nowhere recognizable so he searched, and stumbled upon a Large city. Exploring the city he found at it's center a large three story timber building. Venturing inside, he found it was a Tavern. No one being helpful to explain what hed happened to him, he ventured upstairs to a quiet sanctuary of sorts. There were few people there, but one of the bartenders proved informative, if not helpful. He explained to Vance, that he had ben yet another victim of something called "the Nexus". It seemed he was now in a world, or plane of existance where all places and times converged. Figuring he had no way back, Vance chose to make the best of things. He was in Rhy'Din, and he planned to stay.
