From Across the Sea of Stars: Renne

He walks upright. He's six feet tall and speaks impeccable English. His hair is neatly combed and overall, he doesn't look that bad. Minus the scars but those are worn mostly with pride. The pride of survival and the knowledge that many of the scars on his flesh came from defending someone or something other than himself.
He's no hero, never claims to be. But he's proud of them all the same.
Two-legged walk, smooth gait, decent speech patterns and an insatiably curious outlook on a world perceived in sound, smell and touch.

That's what he once was.

Eight years ago, that's what he was.

Since then, he has changed. Time and circumstance change everything and everyone in their wake. Life is born and living things die. Dreams are made, fulfilled or shattered.
But it hasn't been all for tears.
It hasn't been all for naught.

He doesn't walk anymore. He's no longer six-foot-something. His hair is short and hacked-off, perpetually tangled. He no longer puts up the illusion that he resembles something humanish. And his English is in dire need of improvement.
He is learning though, to live in civilisation again. He learned and re-learned in one place he kept coming back to.
And will keep coming back to if he could.
Out in the wilds, he survives like any other animal. He watches his own back like any other animal and he hunts or scavenges like any other animal. Except, sometimes, when someone asks him, he will come to civilisation. He will adopt polite manners -- the ones he knows.
He learned how to cook and eventually became proficient at bartending. Ironic but true since he once promised to never touch alcohol. It is a promise that he keeps and will keep.
And he learned all this -- better speech, cooking, bartending, how to laugh and how to live -- in a sturdy three-story building on the eastern docks of Rhy'Din.

The place he came back to.
And will keep coming back to, had he the choice.

The place and its people make up six years of the eight he's been in this place called Rhy'Din and realms beyond. Since the fallout -- termed by him, the Great Fall -- of his homeworld and being consequently flung into this place called Rhy'Din, he has learned joy and sorrow.
He has learned when to keep the careful, nomadic instinct close to heart. He has learned what home is, and how strong that kind of tie can be.

He's not the center of anything or anyplace. He just is. He's loyal to a fault. He doesn't know how to apply half of the knowledge he's gained about how to deal with people. He doesn't know what the future will bring.
He does know some things.

He knows that eight years ago, his heart was ripped out of his chest -- quite literally. And that it is the one organ that cannot be regenerated.
He knows that humans are fickle, unpredictable creatures. He knows they are fascinating and wise yet as much, they are foolish and imperfect. Like him.

He knows that place on the eastern docks of Rhy'Din is and probably will be considered for a long time, Home. The people there, Home. Even as they drift away, he won't forget.

Horætio Renne Arc'err doesn't usually forget.

Two days after the Ides of march, he found his world changing again. He didn't know that the impact of that change would drive him to insanity. He didn't know that this change had as much impact on him as the Twelfth of May, 2000 -- a date he only knows by heart and rarely speaks of.

All Renne knows is that he's no center of any world and that's all right.

All he knows is that he's a part of something. Be it a green-eyed spirit somewhere in the Hereafter or the story of a three-story building and its people, he's a part of it.
When his mind was lucid, he recorded his stories. He chronicled everything, committing it to memory.
When his mind broke and recently retreated into itself, it began to relive those memories so meticulously chronicled.

History, all history, is worthy of remembrance.
He took on the role of chronicling.

When other candles were snuffed out, he kept his going.
He still keeps it going, forever lit in the window of useless eyes.

Some candles really don't go out.

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!

I've been curious about Renne since he was first mentioned to me by word of mouth, and through the small mentions of him in the stories of Harold Lowe.

I've been curious about Renne since this entire storyline idea for a Dockside Murder Trial was brought to my attention.

I've likely been curious about Renne since long before I had ever heard of him.

This insight to who he is as a character is beautiful, and thank you so very much for sharing it. I look forward to reading as much more of his story and history as I can. Wherever it may be. If I can find it, I'm interested.

He seems like a very in depth character. You've put a lot of work into him, and he's one of a kind simply because of the way you present him.

You've captured my interest even more intently than it was!

Well, thanks. Oi, you have me blushing like mad now. Yeah, he has a lot of history -- much of it on RDI under my little folder, "Across the Sea of Stars" -- of which it was actually lowe who suggested the title. Fitting, I found it. So kudos.
And yeah, his history's entwined tightly in. Aside from the ten years of hand-done work(yeah, ten years but it mostly grew in on its own. All I really did/do is the conversions, research to properly explain things, etc). I'm kinda thinking about posting what I did of his past here but not sure where to do it.

So at least until I can figure out where to properly do such things as transcribe all that, plus his current story, here's a link if anyone wants to take a peek.

Mind, there's a lot of stuff. And his backstory's a bit vague in many areas but I can't reveal everything. It'd spoil my ongoing project after all.
Questions are more than welcome, comments, anything. Renne's a confusing little bastard and since he's so weird, sometimes can be misunderstood.
A lot of what's there was written alongside other strings and proudly so. I've got everything backed up and saved -- yeah, became a story/log/post pack rat now.

Anyhoo, here it is.

Weeeell. You've certainly come to the right place. This "Character Portfolio" is just the place to let you ramble about your character. What inspired him. What thought processes were running when you came up with certain ideas for him. Whatever!

It's also a place for people like me to jump in and say "OMG! I LOVE THIS CHARACTER! I remember when..." As has been the case in some of the other portfolio threads.

link = awesome! I'll have to hop over and do some reading some time!

Hm. Interesting, that. I've read some of these and I liked what I read so far. Really liked it. Much kudos.

And while I search to find the proper place to put the more public bits of his past, I can easily tell of how he came to be outside of the story-realm.

He started as a childhood drawing. I was seven and since I was a tot, I was quite the outcast. not that I cared -- the solitude, I liked and it gave me a real chance to let my brain just go.
He started as a drawing. A portrait of an imaginary entity that didn't yet have a voice. It wasn't quite the imaginary friend concept but it was close enough.

From there, one badly done drawing grew into more precise drawings, better materials, better technique. Then came the writing and the talking. Yes, I talked to myself when I was alone. Asked questions. Figured out this ambiguous cloud of ectoplasm-inspired-by-introspection goo inside my head.

In 1999, I brought him into play. At the time, I was a green player, hell, I still am to some extents I think. But then, i was greener. Way greener. As in pathetic-green.
Back then, I was horrible at explaining to others who he is/was and what he is/was.

I never knew how until I played and learned. Before then, no one knew about him but me. He started out as mine. My secret. My little thought.

Now?

He's still mine, very much mine. But not mine either. He's better explained, better translated to interaction than he was in '99. But he's no longer "Mine" in the sense that he was "Mine" some fifteen years ago.
If that makes ANY sense whatsoever.
I hope it does.

He's mine, completely and wholly mine and I'm proud of that.
He's not mine. He's his own entity. I'm his biographer.

I know I just stated two very diferent things but they're both true.

I've got hand-done papers, a site and even what I'm publishing(now) of his journal devoted. More than that yes, but not all of that is going to be released.
It'd not be....right. If that, again, makes sense.

Renne is Renne. And I love playing him. I love writing him.
